The objectives of this study was to explore the knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions of elementary school students towards trans fatty acids. In addition, the students' preferences and consumption frequencies of processed food items containing trans fats, as well as their food behaviors relating to snack consumption, were investigated. The study population consisted of students from seven provinces, including Seoul, Busan, Daegu, Kwangju, Gyungnam, Chungnam, and Kangwon. Two schools were selected in each province and one class was randomly chosen in each school. All students from the selected classes were surveyed onsite (N=951). The data were analyzed with chi-square tests and t-tests using SPSS/Windows (ver.15.0) program. The results showed that the students' knowledge levels toward trans fatty acid were very low, particularly on the production process of trans fats. The students perceived that trans fatty acids can cause health problems and should be consumed in low amounts. They also felt there is a need for a good nutrition education on trans fats. Furthermore, the students responded that their most preferred foods were in the order of breads, biscuits, and snacks. The most frequently consumed snack item among 2nd graders was biscuits and among 5th graders it was breads. It was also found that 90% of the students had snacks once a day, and of them, 58% prepared their own snacks. Based on this, we propose that students who allowed to choose their own snacks should be carefully educated on trans fatty acids to prevent excessive consumption of high trans fat foods.
To provide rice products in substituted for wheat flour and wheat products in elementary school foodservice, the survey for nutritionist in elementary school was accomplished from November 3rd to 8th, 2012 in Gwangju and Jeonnam area, and obtained 83 and 95 copies from Gwangju and Jeonnam, respectively. Most nutritionists were graduated from universities and had careers longer than 15 years. The nutritionists (56.7%) had worked at the schools where food allergy students were enrolled. The consumption of wheat flours per one student per month was 677.8 g in Gwangju and 707.4 g in Jeonnam. Udon and Jajangmyeon were more popular wheat products. Nutritionist agreed positively that rice products instead of wheat products were possible to use for meal menu (73.5% in Gwangju and 61.1% in Jeonnam). The frequent use of rice products was tteokbokkitteok, because of students' preference. The rice bread and tteokguktteok were preferred significantly higher in Jeonnam than in Gwangju. The advantages of rice products which perceived by nutritionists were benefits for health, digestive easily, and high nutritious, but their disadvantages were hard-to-find and expensive. The nutritional values of rice and recipes for cooking rice products were required as educational program for increasing consumption of rice products. Demonstration for rice cooking methods was selected most popular program. The application of rice products for school foodservice was preferred to Jeonnam compared to Gwangju (p<0.001). As a consequence, the nutritionists working in elementary school in Gwangju and Jeonnam area have positive thought about using rice products in school foodservice, if educational program of school foodservice menu using rice products should be demonstrated them.
This study investigated the status of planting status of school's flower of 11 elementary schools located in Chung-ju and its results were as follows. Totally 3,502 trees were planted in the 11 schools and the number of species of the trees was 103. For tall tree Thuja orientalis was planted most frequently and for shrub Buxus microphylla was done in the largest number of the schools. In addition, the number of trees planted in a school was averagely two times more in the model schools than in the other ones, and the average number of species of trees was also over three times more in the model schools. When the number of species of trees was examined according to their types, decidous broad leaved tree was found most frequently overall and the model schools had more various species of decidous tree compared to the other ones. Investigation on designation of school's flower and tree with the 11 elementary school, revealed similar results with those of previous studies performed with the schools in other areas and the tendency meant that the designation was uniform to some degree. Moreover, as only a few school's flower and tree were planted or no one was done in some schools, the species of school's flower and tree needed to be determined by considering characteristics and school percepts of a school as well as local features and circumstances of a region. In addition, more efforts should be made to infuse love for school and to improve quality of education by increasing the planting rate of school's flower and tree and by focusing them.
The aim of this study was to provide fundamental data by degree of obesity which was necessary to nutritional education for the formation of right eating and dietary guideline by researching food habits of children. In order to achieve this purpose, a survey was conducted on 3, 4, 5, 6th grade of students from 4 schools in S and G city in Jeolla-Namdo. The results was as follows. There were 384(44.4%) students were normal weight, 193(22.3) were overweight, and 287(33.2) were low weight by obesity indices. Comparing the student's subjective health condition among the degree of obesity, 40.4% of overweight recognized they were healthy, 30.1% recognized ordinary, and 57.1% of lean recognized they were healthy, 34.5% recognized ordinary. It was turned out that most students who were overweight and lean recognized healthy and normal. Family was reported to be the most impact factor on student's diet habits, and then Multimedia such as TV seemed to have a effect on overweight and lean students, but nutrition teachers had a direct influence on normal weight students. The most thing which eating habits for a reform was unbalanced diet. The students in this research have breakfast everyday and regularly. Regarding dietary attitudes, overweight group enjoyed eating healthy food more than normal and low body weight group did, and tried to eat what they have never eaten before. In conclusion, it's necessary for elementary school students that increase the control ability of self perceived health condition with education for good eating habit and grasp their condition themselves through the nutrition education in school.
The purpose of this study was to examine food hygiene knowledge and health practice levels of elementary school students at foodservice in the Suwon area. Of the 500 upper graders from three elementary schools, 486 students (97.2%) participated in the study. The questionnaire was composed of general characteristics including experience of serving food at school, food hygiene knowledge (25 questions), and health practice (18 questions). The results were as follows: The education experiences of food hygiene were below 40% though most students (88.1%) participated in providing food at foodservice. The percentage of correct answers in food hygiene knowledge was over 70% in most questions, but relatively lower in food preservation temperature (44.7%) and food poisoning bacteria (43.2%). When we examined food hygiene behavior of elementary school students in 5scales, the level of personal hygiene management was 4.04, sanitary management in food product was 3.62, environmental hygiene was 3.92, and foodborn disease and food microorganism was 3.81. Each level in each subarea was significantly related in the frequency of hygiene education experiences. Finally, the food hygiene knowledge was positively correlated with its behavior level in elementary school foodservice. These results suggested that the knowledge of food hygiene may affect its behavior, and therefore, regular education of food hygiene at home and school would be needed to improve food safety in foodservice.
The purpose of this article is to investigate the effect of visual working memory, the types and contents of graphic annotations on English learning. The participants of the experiments were 5th and 6th graders. The result showed that animation was effective only in the word test for children with large visual working memory, whereas text-only-annotation yielded better performance in the comprehension test in Experiment 1. The effect of relevance of animations was tested in Experiment 2. Context-relevant-animations yielded better comprehension than the animations denoting the typical meaning, whereas the opposite pattern was reported in the word test. The result of the two experiments was interpreted in terms of cognitive load theory and the generative theory of multimedia learning.
The purpose of this study was to inquire into how children's internet addiction is affected by home environments, computing environments, parental marital conflicts, parenting attitudes and parental monitoring and control as perceived by children. The study was conducted on 579 sixth graders at elementary schools located in Daejeon City. The data was analyzed by frequency, percentage, $X^2$, one way ANOVA, and scheffe analysis using the SPSS 18.0 version program. The results were as follows: first, out of 579 students, 5.0% were classified as at high-risk for addiction; 22.8% as at potential-risk; 72.2% as normal. Second, in the high-risk group, boys accounted for a higher percentage compared to girl students. Mothers' academic backgrounds and fathers' occupations affected the children's internet addiction. Third, the high-risk group tended to use the internet in internet cafes, to use it before going to elementary school, to use it for at least 4 hours once, and to use it to play games. Fourth, the high-risk group perceived parents marital conflicts as more frequent and more severer, as compared to other groups. Fifth, while the high-risk group perceived parenting attitudes as negative, the normal group perceived them as positive. Sixth, the potential-risk group and the normal group perceived parental monitoring and control as more frequent, as compared to the high-risk group.
Atopic dermatitis is a chronic relapsing inflammatory skin disease. In the past years, numbers of children with atopic dermatitis has increased all over the world. Objective of this study was to evaluate awareness of students in atopy-friendly elementary schools about environmentally-friendly grown agricultural products and their practice levels for dietary guidelines. This study was conducted by using a questionnaire on 116 students from three atopy-friendly schools in Jin-an, Jeong-eup, and Gwang-ju and 124 students from general elementary schools. According to the results, the numbers of children who suffer from atopic dermatitis between atopy-friendly schools and general schools were not significantly different. Among, students with atopic dermatitis, more students in atopy-friendly school, compared to general school, restricted foods. Since different school feeding services have been provided, students in atopy-friendly schools generally get more information about the environmentally-friendly agricultural products through nutrition education. However, most results did not show differences in knowledge levels and practice levels for dietary guidelines for children between students in atopy-friendly schools and general schools about environmentally-friendly produces. However, students in atopy-friendly schools less frequently eat cookies, soda drinks, or fast foods. In conclusion, appropriate program for nutrition education should be provided to elementary school students with atopic dermatitis.

This study developed a program suitable for operating an infinite creative space within the public library, and analyzed the effect of promoting participants' creativity through a trial run of the program. To do this, we operated a "picture book making activities" program in the infinite creative space of J library located in Chungbuk. This program was performed for 18 elementary students in grades 3-6. Torrance TTCT (The Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking) tools were used in this study to measure the overall creativity. As a result, first, awareness of the importance and interest in environmental science was improved through the whole program process. Second, participants' problem-solving abilities improved during the program by having to derive a solution for a given problem through brainstorming. Third, storytelling ability improved after the story-creating elements of the program. Fourth, each participants' creativity was improved through creative activities. Fifth, by publishing the results of creative activities of participants as books, the self-esteem of participating children improved as well.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of self control and social support on the mobile phone dependence in elementary school students. The subjects were 392 children(187 boys, 205 girls) in 5, 6th grade from two elementary schools in Gyeonggi-do. The mobile phone dependence was assessed by the Mobile Phone Dependence Scale(Ko Seong-Ja, 2012), self control was measured by the Self-control Scale(Nam hyeon-mi, 1999) and social support was assessed by the Social Support Scale(Han mi hyun, 1996). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, Pearson correlations and hierarchical regressions. The major results of this study were as follows: First, there was no significant difference in mobile phone dependence by sex of the children. Second, children's mobile phone dependence were correlated with self control and social support. Finally, children's self control, family support and peer support significantly explained the mobile phone dependence. But peer support appeared to have negative corelation on mobile phone dependence, but appeared to have static effect in regression result by suppressor variables. So it needs to explore statistical function of suppressor variables in follow-up studies. Also research of this study indicate that self control enhancement program should be developed and parents should communicate more frankly and affectively with their children in order to prevent children's mobile phone dependence.
