A Theoretical Review on Mega Ship and Mega Hub (초대형 컨테이너 선박에 대한 이론적인 고찰)

  • In 1990s the debate on very large ships made the Mega ship and mega port concept emerge. Many studies have bees done on such big ships by consultant, naval architects, port designers, ship operators, economists etc,. with different points of view and results. This paper, by reviewing the literature systematically, identifies limitations and major issues, and suggests directions for further studies.

A Study on the Safety Measure for Mega Container Ships Calling at Busan New Port from the Perspective of Pilotage (도선 관점에서 본 초대형 컨테이너 선박의 부산신항 내 안전대책 연구)

  • With the removal of underwater obstacles in the Busan New Port, the water depth of the pier has been secured up to 17m, and the port authority is constantly responding to the trend of container vessels becoming larger. Also, in 2020, 24,000TEU class container ships are entering to the port, and it is planned to secure the depth in the port to 23 m later in line with this trend. Mega container ships must check in advance the factors to be considered depending on the situation at the time, and for this, it is judged that information sharing among stakeholders is necessary. In this paper, to understand the effect of the corresponding route because of the mega container ships, a transit safety evaluation was conducted based on statistical data on ship entry and departure and maneuver characteristics of corresponding ships. The result showed that the transit of the mega container ships has increased up to 8.4% comparing to the risk of 4,000TEU class container ships. Additionally, safety measures such as minimum safety depth and tug operation plans were presented by gathering opinions on operational characteristics from the perspective of pilotage for safe transit in the Busan New Port area. Through this, it is considered that it will be possible to contribute to the prevention of accidents when entering and leaving the Busan New Port.

  • Recently, container vessels are required to be applied various technologies to improve ship life-cycle and operating efficiency for the cost decreasing of logistics. The degradation of engine efficiency due to the increasing capacity of the ship and the related equipment of facilities are applied to large-scale ships without considering the condition of ship operation by increasing the ship size and feature. In this paper, the flow analysis is performed with existing gas pipe in large-scale container ship with the operation-condition of higher capacity engine and facilities, and the results were used on the new gas pipe design for ULCS (Ultra Large Container Ship). The newly designed gas pipe can be expected to increase the operating efficiency of ULCS.

  • Most domestic container terminals are lack of container storage capacity compared to the throughput of container. The main reason is the difference between the theoretical capacity applied to the development of terminals and the real capacity of a berth Another reason seems to be the increase of the container crane in number per berth to match the need for the getting larger vessel, which is resulted from the increase of the berth capacity from the start. This study, therefore, aims to suggest the economic size of container yard by comparing the existing one. For this the berth capacity was recalculated, the required yard size derived considering up to 10,000TEU vessel and then cost comparison done.

  • As container traffic in the world increases rapidly, size if containership is become bigger and bigger. With these trends, many studies have. been done on such big ships by consultant, naval architects, port designers, ship operators, economists etc,. with different points of view and results. But previous studies were concentrated on hardware and theoretical side. Therefore the objective of this paper is to analyze response and intention of ship's user such as shipping companies and forwarding companies about prospects of mega-ship size, preference of Mega ship, problem and handling time of Mega ship.

  • 부산항 및 부산신항 개발의 특징은 매립으로 인하여 가항수역은 협소화되는 반면에 선박은 대형화되면서 흘수가 증가함으로 인하여 점점 더 깊은 수심을 필요로 하게 되었다. 따라서 초대형선들은 출입항선 상호간의 간섭이 증가하고, 심흘수화로 인한 조종성능의 저하와 비상시 대응책의 한계를 드러내는 등의 문제점을 안고 있다. 또한 전반적인 선박 통항량의 증가는 거대형 컨테이너선이 부두전면에서 회두하거나 감속, 접근하는데 소요되는 시간에 따라서 항만의 효율성뿐만 아니라 주변수역의 안전에도 크게 영향을 미치고 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 항만의 안전과 효율성을 제고하기 위하여 초대형 선박의 조종특성과 주변 여건을 다각도로 고려한 최적의 표준 조선방법 및 응급조선을 2D베이스로 개발된 선박조종시뮬레이터를 이용하여 모색해 보고자 한다.

  • As containerized maritime transport began in earnest, the size of container ships has steadily increased, and recently, the operation of 24,000 TEU-class vessels has become regular. However, concerns about the efficiency and productivity of such mega container ships from a port operational perspective have continued to be raised. The 10th Busan International Port Conference requested an in-depth study on the trends of container ship enlargement by analyzing the order status of ultra-large container ships from major global liners. Generally, the factor that drives the upsizing of ships is the realization of economies of scale that lowers transportation costs per TEU, which leads to a higher level of cost reduction per unit transportation compared to the increase in fuel consumption due to transporting large amounts of cargo with a single ship. However, it is necessary to examine whether this trend of container vessel enlargement is feasible for port operations. To this end, this study compares and analyzes the productivity and efficeiency of different ship sizes to evaluate the effect of ship size on port operations.

  • In this article. the specifications of a future container crane for a 18,000 TEU megaship are investigated After studying the transitions of containerships through the past half century, the characteristics of the past and current container cranes are outlined. together with various research trends throughout the world Upon these results, the size and performance of the container crane that will be used beyond the year 2014 are forecast. Specifically, the structure, trolley and hoist mechanism, control method, outreach. backreach, rail gage, loading capacity, stability, durability, and others are summarized.

  • Recently the building of ultra large container ship are discussed among ship building companies and ship operating company who have a tendency to pursue the advantage of large scale of economy. These tendency will be continued for the time being, if ship-building skill and economical efficiency are available. As the enlargement of container ship size becomes hot issues in ship-building markets, the needs for re-arrangement of accommodation house in large container ship are proposed carefully in some researches. This study examined economical efficiency of re-arrangement of accommodation house in ultra large container ship. The separation between accommodation and engine room is proposed through out drawing works in initial design stage and we examined the merits and demerits of the separation in the view of economical efficiency. The RFR(Required Freight Rate) is considered as the objective function to evaluate the re-designed vessel. The economical benefits are analyzed in the view of ship operator and shipyard respectively.
