  • A dynamic system is called positive if any trajectory of the system starting from non-negative initial states remains forever non-negative for non-negative controls. In this paper, new sufficient conditions for asymptotic stability of the interval positive time-varying linear discrete-time systems with time-varying delay in states are considered. The considered time-varying delay time has an interval-like bound which has minimum and maximum delay time. The proposed conditions are established by using a solution bound of the Lyapunov equation and they are expressed by simple inequalities which do not require any complex numerical algorithms. An example is given to illustrate that the new conditions are simple and effective in checking stability for interval positive time-varying discrete systems.

  • An electronic ballast for driving automotive HID lamps is presented. The circuit topology is composed of a fly back converter, a half bridge inverter, and igniter using voltage doubler. A prototype was developed and tested on a 35W lamp with a 12V input voltage. To avoiding acoustic resonance the half bridge inverter is operated at 400Hz and provided a squared-wave voltage source to the lamp. The transient and steady state characteristics of the tested HID lapm are measured and analyzed.

  • For high performance concrete, due to its low water cement ratio (water binder ratio) and addition of mineral admixtures, pretty high autogenous shrinkage and thermal deformation occur at very early age of casting (especially before hardening). This may lead to early age cracking of HPC structures, and then may influence the durability of HPC. This paper has monitored the early age properties of HPC successfully by embedded FBG strain sensor. The results showed that the deformation increased rapidly within the first day after HPC casting. And its value is up to $85{\mu}{\varepsilon}$, which is the 30% of two-month deformation ($280{\mu}{\varepsilon}$). Considering the durability and permeability of HPC, the first-day deformation is pretty high and can not be neglected. Also the superior capability of FBG sensors such as continuity, stability and multiplexed technique etc, has been demonstrated.

  • Engine test as well as unload test of starting motor itself was performed to evaluate the braking characteristics of starting system used for initial spin-up of gas turbine for power generation. Through the experimental evaluation of the braking performance with the capacity of braking resistor of the starting motor, we have achieved quantitative data to secure robust braking characteristics in emergency during the starting period of the gas turbine. It is possible to establish a capacity selection criterion of braking resistor to ensure the starting reliability of the gas turbine.

  • Direct back analysis software is coded based on Simplex method using FLAC as a subroutine. For the verification of the software, 12 different cases are assumed combining various displacements in different measuring locations around a tunnel. The number of displacements for cases varies from 3 to 240. It is verified that the exact elasticity and the primary stress state of rock around a tunnel could be found through iterative calculation regardless of the locations and number of displacements and initial values needed for the direct back analysis.

  • Pressure, used as a minimal processing technology in the food industry, is a valuable tool ensuring microbiologically safe, shelf-stable fruit and vegetable production. Pressure could be used to deliver a greater variety of minimally processed products, as demanded by today's consumers. Weevaluated the effect of <400 MPa pressure, applied during chilling, on fresh fruit purees (strawberry, kiwi, aloe, and pomegranate) and vegetable extracts (from carrot and spinach) during cold storage (<$10^{\circ}C$) for 15-20 days. Samples were prepared in a processing facility in which total plate counts of falling and floating bacteria were controlled at $1{\times}100-10^1$ CFU/plate and $1{\times}10^2-10^3$ $CFU/m^3$ under conditions of $21-25^{\circ}C$ and 55-60% relative humidity. The aerobic plate counts of raw materials were less than $1{\times}10^3$ CFU/g. Evaluation parameters included microbiological safety, vitamin content, and sensory qualities. Although the overall quality of non-treated samples deteriorated with storage time at $10^{\circ}C$, samples pressurized at 250-350 MPa at $5-7^{\circ}C$ for 10 min showed less change, with no significant difference in microbiological safety, vitamin content, or sensory quality. The use of pressure extended the shelf-life during storage at $10^{\circ}C$.

  • Purpose: The aim of this retrospective study was to provide long-term data about the correlation between multifactorial local factors and the survival of implants. Material and methods: During 19 years (1991 to 2009), 2796 implants were placed in 879 patients. From dental charts and radiographs, the following data were collected: patient's age at implant placement, gender, implant system, surface, length, diameter, location of implant placement, bone quality, primary stability, type of prosthesis. The correlations between these data and implant survival were analyzed. Statistical analysis was performed using Kaplan-Meier survival analysis, Chi-square test, odds ratio. Results: 1. Among the 2796 implants, 150 implants failed that resulted in a cumulative survival rate of 94.64%. The cumulative survival rate of smooth surface implants (91.76%) was lower than rough surface implants (96.02%). 2. Anatomic location, implant surface, diameter of smooth surface implant, primary stability, type of prosthesis, patient's age and gender were significantly associated with implant survival (P < .05). 3. No significant difference in implant survival was found in relation to the following factors: implant length, bone quality, diameter of rough surface implants and type of rough surface according to implant manufacturer (P < .05). Conclusions: Local factors such as anatomic location, implant surface, diameter of smooth surface implant, primary stability and type of prosthesis have a significant effect on implant survival.

  • In this study, cationic gemini surfactants were synthesized by increasing the length of the hydrophobic chain and using 1,4-butanediol as a spacer, and the result was confirmed by $^1H-NMR$. The synthesized surfactant was a white powder, and Kraffts point was below $0^{\circ}C$. Surface tension measurements revealed that the evaluated critical micelle concentration (c.m.c) was $1.8{\times}10^{-3}{\sim}6.5{\times}10^{-4}mol/L$ with a surface tension of 22.5~26.1 dyne/cm at the c.m.c. The initial foam height for CG 14-6E-14 estimated by Ross-Miles method was 16 cm and after 5 minutes the height was 14 cm. It was confirmed that the initial foam force and foam stability were the highest. The foam test and emulsion stability of synthesized gemini cationic surfactants were also compared to those of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), a commoly used surfactant.

  • In this study, the deformation behavior stability of sealing rings with three different cross sectional areas has been presented using a FEM technique. To investigate the deformation behavior stability, the initial compression rate of 25% has been applied to the sealing ring, which is molded with a nitrile butadiene rubber. The maximum strain, maximum stress, and maximum contact normal stress have been analyzed for the working fluid pressure of $25kgf/cm^2$. The FEM results show that the maximum strain of a hollow o-ring and a hollow rectangular ring with a hollow space in the center of a sealing ring is higher than that of a conventional o-ring, but the maximum stress and the maximum contact normal stress are low. In these results, the sealing rings with a hollow space in the center of the cross sectional area is recommended to increase an extended endurance stability of sealing rings. But, the solid sealing ring is designed to guarantee the sealing safety of a contact sealing ring.
