초고주기 피로 시대의 도래

Effect of Nitriding on Fatigue Characteristics of Cr-Mo Alloy Steel (고장력 Cr-Mo강의 질화처리에 따른 피로특성)

  • CrMo alloy steel was nitrided using two types of processing methods, ion-nitriding processing and nitrocarburizing. Both processes were conducted for a duration of 30 min. To compare the surface hardness of the alloys created by the different processes, microhardness tests were conducted, and fatigue tests of each material were performed by a cantilever rotary bending fatigue test machine (Yamamoto, YRB 200) in the very high cycle regime ($N>10^7cycle$). Fractography of the fractured surfaces was conducted by scanning electron microscopy - to observe the fracture mechanisms of very high cycle fatigue and the effect of the nitriding process on the fatigue characteristics.

  • The paper presents an overview of the present state of study on the fatigue behaviors at very high number of cycles ($N_f$ > $10^7$). A classification of materials with typical S-N curves and influencing factors such as notches, residual stresses, temperatures, corrosion environments and stress ratios are given. The microstructural inhomogeneities of materials and micro-cracks played an important roles in very high cycle fatigue behaviors. The failure mechanisms for the fatigue design of materials and components are mentioned.

  • An accelerated ultrasonic fatigue test(UFT) has been used for analyzing very high cycle fatigue( VHCF, $N_f$ > $10^7$). This study reviews how the test specimen is to be determined. We focus on UFT using a resonance of 20 kHz. The specimen geometry is determined by selecting test materials by using a dynamic Young's modulus and wavelength of 20 kHz. The dynamic Young's modulus is calculated at the resonant frequency. Through a resonant vibration test at 20 kHz, the length of the specimen is calculated. By determining the shape of the specimen, the stress during the UFT is calculated. The UFT results should be comparable at the test frequency and the specimen geometry obtained by the conventional fatigue tests.

  • An accelerated ultrasonic fatigue test (UFT) was used for analyzing very high cycle fatigue (VHCF, $N_f$ > $10^7$) behaviors of a specimen with a test resonance of 20 kHz. Using the finite element method (FEM), the dynamic behaviors of the specimen was studied by calculating the stresses along its gauge portion, with displacement. The shape of gauge portion profile was assumed to be a hyperbolic according to the stress equation of the UFT. However, as the specimen used in the test had a circular arc profile, the FEM was used for studying the local stresses for two cases of the gauge profile. The results were compared with those obtain from the stress equation of the UFT. The dynamic behavior of the gauge portion could be understood for further comparison with the actual results.

  • Very high cycle fatigue (VHCF) behavior of aerospace components has emerged much attention due to their long service life. In this study, a piezoelectric ultrasonic fatigue testing (UFT) system has been developed by Mbrosiatec Co., Ltd. to study the high cycle fatigue (HCF) strength of Ti-6Al-4V alloy. Hourglass-shaped specimens have been investigated in the range from $10^6$ to $10^9$ cycles at room temperature under completely reversed R = -1 loading conditions,. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis revealed that failures occurred in the entire range up to the gigacycle regime, and the fractures have beenfound to be initiated from the surface, unlike in steels. However, it was found from the SEM microgprahs that microcracks transformed into intergranular fractures. Thus, it can be concluded from according to the results that this test method can be applicable to commercialized automotive and railroad parts that require high cycle fatigue strength.
