  • A three-dimensional finite analysis method was proposed to predict the failure of composite double-lap bolted joints, which is based on the stiffness degradation method using damage variables and Hashin's three-dimensional failure criteria. Ladeveze's theory using damage variables to consider the matrix/shear damage was combined with stiffness degradation in fiber direction. Four different failure modes were considered including matrix compression/shear, matrix tension/shear, fiber compression, and tension failures. The friction between bolt and composite and the clamping force were considered using a commercial finite element software ABAQUS. The damage model was incorporated using the user-defined subroutine of the software. The predicted result was verified with the existing test result for bearing tension double shear and showed the deviation ranging 7~16% from test results.

  • In this paper, progressive failure analysis is performed on composite joints widely used in various industries such as the aerospace industry. The analysis was conducted on single bolted joints to confirm its reliability and in succession on double-bolted composite joints as well to study the characteristics of progressive failure. Hashin failure criteria and EGDM (energy based gradual degradation model) were used for the analysis. Failure variables are defined by four failure modes, respectively. According to the variables, stiffness degradation has been calculated. As a result of comparing the test and analysis results of single-bolted joints, the error was below 5% and it showed that the analytical results are rather credible. Also, the parametric analysis consequences were obtained conducting the process-progressive failure analysis on the double-bolted composite joints considering edge-distance ratio (e/d ratio) and bolt spacing.

  • The failure of composite sandwich joints was experimentally investigated. A total of 30 joint specimens of 5 different types were tested with various fastening methods and core materials. In the NomexTM core sandwich joints, the core shear buckling was commonly observed in all the specimens which was followed by the slope change of the load-displacement curve. After the shear buckling, however, the joints carried additional loads of 50~200% over the buckling loads and then finally failed in the upper face breakage. The joints of PMI foam core showed the shear failure of the core instead of shear buckling and experienced the sharp drop of the carried load. Considering the failure modes, while both the core and face properties are important in the $Nomex^{TM}$ core joints, core shear strength seems to be the critical factor for the foam core joints.

  • The identification of the dynamic properties of structural joints is important for predicting the dynamic behavior of assembled systems. However, the identification of the properties using analytical or experimental approaches is extremely difficult or even impossible. Several studies have proposed hybrid or synthesis methods that simultaneously used analytical and experimental approaches to identify the dynamic properties of a joint. However, among the many types of joints, only the bolt joint was treated as a practical example in these studies. In this study, for a simple assembly system comprising two plates and one hinge joint, a simple methodology involving the use of the static-based subpart analysis method to identify the dynamic properties is proposed. Finally, the proposed method is applied to a glove box in a passenger vehicle that includes hinge joints.

  • For the joint connection of the precast steel grid composite decks, the prefabricated joint which is composed of concrete shear key and high-tension bolts was already proposed. In this study, for the purpose of increasing the bending stiffness and bending strength of the proposed prefabricated joint section details of the proposed joint are modified, and through experimental tests the bending performance, such as stiffness and strength of a modified joint, is compared with those of the proposed joint. Test and analysis results show that the shear cracks in the concrete shear key are clearly reduced by the strengthening of the shear key using shear studs and additional rebars. According to analysis results of the moment-curvature relationship, bending stiffness of the modified joint is about 47% greater than the stiffness of the proposed joint. Furthermore, the modified joint has about 32% greater bending strength than the proposed joint. Compared to specimens without the joint the modified joint has same or slightly higher bending strength, but about 37% lower bending stiffness.

  • This paper gives a review of finite element model for the analysis of fastening as practical points of view. Different mechanical properties of plate-fastener systems are analyzed. Calculations of the system properties are described as well as the technique of their application in model. Analysis has been performed for calculating the load distribution in multi-joint and the results are compared using the several models. The effects of fastener-hole clearance on the load distribution in multifastener joints are presented. And the stress analysis method have been reviewed for failure analysis of mechanical joint of composite laminate.

  • In order to design and manufacture structures such as a guided missile, assembly process with fastener is an essential method of fabrication. In this study, the dynamic characteristics of a cylindrical structure with bolted joints were studied using experimental methods. The change of the natural frequency of the structure with the change of the fastening method and the tightening torque were measured by the test and the finite element analysis was performed using the stiffness model of the fastening part according to the fastening method and compared with the test results.

  • We evaluated the stress-reduction effect for different shapes of a composite adherend with or without a spew fillet. Six different single-lap joint specimens were modeled and assessed using nonlinear finite element analysis. Moreover, we investigated the effect of the stiffness ratio of the adherend and adhesive. The single-lap joint with normal tapering had the highest stress values, and the single-lap joint with reverse tapering and a spew fillet had the lowest stress values. The composite adherends with higher stiffness had lower stress values, and the adhesives with lower stiffness had lower stress values.
