  • The objective of this study was to analyze long term temporal trends of water chemistry and spatial heterogeneity for 83 sampling sites of Geum-River watershed using water quality dataset during 2003~2007 (obtained from the Ministry of Environment, Korea). The water quality, based on multi-parameters of temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), suspended solids (SS), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), and electric conductivity (EC), largely varied depending on the landuse patterns, years and seasons. The watershed was classified into three different landuse types: forest stream (Fo), agricultural stream (Ag), and urban stream (Ur). Largest seasonal variabilities in most parameters occurred during the two months of July to August and these were closely associated with large spate of summer monsoon rain. Conductivity, used as a key indicator for an ionic dilution during rainy season, and nutrients of TN and TP had inverse functions of precipitation. BOD, COD decrease during the rainy season. Minimum values in the conductivity, TN, and TP were observed during the summer monsoon, indicating an ionic and nutrient dilution of river water by the rainwater. In contrast, major inputs of suspended solids (SS) occurred during the period of summer monsoon. The landuse patterns analyses, based on the variables of BOD, COD, TN, TP and SS, showed that the values were greater in the agricultural stream (Ag) than in the forest stream (Fo) and urban stream (Ur) and that water quality was worst in the urban stream (Ur). The overall dataset suggest that efficient water quality management, especially in Gap-Stream and Miho-Stream, which showed worst water quality is required along with some of urban stream (Ur), based on the analysis of landuse patterns.

  • In order to disclose the contamination of the Mushim-Cheon by pollutants in August and September of 1989 and to establish countermeasures, the collected water samples were analyzed to obtain the following results : 1. The water temperature of the period ranged from 25.8 to $30.8^{\circ}C$ acceptable for the growth of microorganisms and algae to allow the self-purification of the stream. 2. The pHs at the sites during the same period ranged from 6.5 to 8.5 which fall within the allowed values for the first grade water supplies except for site 14. 3. At site 18 which is the confluence of the sewer of the excretion disposal facilities and the main stream, the DO was observed to fall down to 0.7 ppm in September. 4. The BOD value reached a maximum of 62.1 ppm at site 18, which far exceeded the limit of 40 ppm, the allowed value for the discharges from the disposal facilities. In addition, the SS values were 200 and 520 ppm in August and September, respectively, which were three to seven times as high as the allowed limit of 70 ppm. 5. The high $NH_3-N$ value of 46.2 ppm at site 18 in September suggested that the water was heavily contaminated with excretions. 6. The BOD load of the sewage from site 12, the Sajik-Dong Sewer, in September was estimated to be about 0.306 ton/day. 7. The contamination of the influents, the family wastewater, and the discharges from the disposal facilities was greater than that of the main stream. 8. In the samples collected from site 12, the Sajik-Dong sewer at an interval of every two hours, a close correlation was observed between the pollutant load and the life cycle of the nearby inhabitants. 9. Compared with the results obtained from the water samples in 1979, it was observed that the water was heavily contaminated at site 12 (the Sajik-Dong Sewer, under the Chung Ju Great Bridge) and site 15 (Under the 2nd Uncheon Bridge) over the last 10 years, with little difference at site 9(Young Un-Dong water supply source).

  • The recovery of mulberry from a late frost (April 24 to 27) was investigated for four varieties : Kaeryangppong, Cheongilppong, and Jamsang 21 in Cheongju area, Chungbuk Province. 1. Unfavourable meteorlogical conditions for recovery of mulberry followed the early late frost : lower than normal temperatures in mid-April, less sunshine in early and mid-Jay, lower temperatures and early and less precipitation in late-May, and less precipitation than normal in early June. 2. Jamsang 21 grew to the 2-3 leaf stage first, at which time Kaeryangppong and Jamsang 22 were at the 1-2 leaf stage, and Cheongilppong was at the swallow-bill shape-1 leaf stage. 3. The first leaf stage occurred on May 12, 15 days after the frost and, 19 days later in an average year. The difference lasted until the harvesting season, the 6 leaf stage. 4. Young shoot length was 50-58% of that in 1989. Kaeryangppong was the shortest at 50% and the Jamsang 21 highest at 58% of 1989 values. 5. Leaf number was 52-67% that in 1989. Kaeryangppong was the lowest at 52% and the Jamsang 21 highest at 67% of 1989 values. 6. Young shoot and leaf weight was 44-63%, and leaf weight 39-61%, compared to 1989. Kaeryangppong and Cheongilppong were the lowest, Jamsang 21 and Jamsang 22 were the highest, compared to 1989 data. 7. Young shoot length was 50-58% compared with 1989. Kaeryangppong was the lowest as 50%, the highest Jamsang 21 as 58%. 8. Number of leaf was 52-67% compared with 1989. Kearyangppong was the lowest as 52%, the highest Jamsang 21 as 67%. 9. Young shoot and leaf wight was 44-63%, and leaf weight was 39-61% compared with 1989. Kaeryangppong was the lowest, lowest, Jamsang 21 was the highest, Cheongilppong was similar with Kaeryangppong and Jamsang 22 was similar with Jamsang 21. 10. Rate of young shoot and leaf weight to total weight decreased from 75% in 1989 to 55-61% in 1990. Rate of laef weight to young shoot decreased from 72-82% to 67-71%, showed 5-10% decrease. 11. Leaf yield decreased highly in Jamsang 22 as 57% compared with 1989. Kearyangppong 61%, Jamsang 21 64%, Cheonglppong 72%. • The Miwon-Boeun area in the central and northern part of Okcheon metamorphic zone, Korea, is composed of Okcheon Supergroup and Mesozoic Cheongju and Boeun granitoids which intruded it. The Okcheon Supergroup consists mainly of quartzite (Midongsan Formation), meta-calcareous rocks (Daehyangsan Formation, Hwajeonri Formation), meta-psammitic rocks (Unkyori Formation), meta-politic rocks (Munjuri Formation), meta-conglomeratic rocks (Hwanggangni Formation) in the study area, showing a zonal distribution of NE trend. Its' general trend is locally changed into NS to EW trend in and around high-angle fault of NS or NW trend. This study focused on deformation history of the Okcheon Supergroup, suggesting that the geological structure was formed at least by four phases of deformation. (1) The first phase of deformation occurred under ductile shear deformation of top-to-the southeast movement, forming sheath fold or A-type fold, asymmetric isoclinal fold, NW-SE trending stretching lineation. (2) The second phase of deformation took place under compression of NW-SE direction, forming subhorizontal, tight upright fold of M trend in the earlier phase, and formed semi-brittle thrust fault (Guryongsan Thrust Fault) of top-to-the southeast movement and associated snake-head fold in the later phase. (3) The third phase of deformation formed subhorizontal, open recumbent fold through gravitational or extensional collapses which might be generated from crustal thickening and gravitational instability. (4) The fourth phase of deformation formed moderately plunging, steeply inclined kink fold related to high-angle faulting, being closely connected with the local change of NE-trending regional foliation into NS to EW direction of strike in the vicinity of the high-angle fault.

  • To evaluate exposure characteristics of the insecticide imidacloprid to apple orchard workers during treatment on orchard fields and evaluate its potential risk using a whole body dosimetry (WBD) method, 1,000-time diluted acephate+imidacloprid 25(20+5)% solutions were sprayed on 10 apple orchard fields in Cheongju with a speed sprayer at a rate of 3,000 L/ha/person, after put on clothes such as inner/outer clothes, personal air pump with a IOM sampler, nitrile glove and mask. Exposure test included mixing, loading and application steps. The test pesticide imidacloprid residues in the collected samples were analyzed with a HPLC-DAD. Recoveries ranged from 81.5 to 108.6% for analytical method validation and from 73.8 to 86.7% for field recovery. Total exposed amounts to mixer/loader and applicator were found to be 0.0014-0.0279% of total applied active ingredient of imidacloprid. Glove exposure of both mixer/loader and applicator was higher than the other parts. Margins of safety of mixer/loader and applicator were calculated to be 97-355 and 46-196, respectively, indicating that exposure risk of imidacloprid to apple orchard workers by spraying with a speed sprayer was very low.

  • In order to monitor the pesticide residues in/on peppers and pepper powder and to assess their risk, pesticides in/on green pepper from 10 farmgates and fresh red pepper from 9 farmgates in Chungbuk area and pepper powder from 6 wholesale markets in Cheongju city were analyzed with a GLC and an HPLC. Also, pepper powder made by pulverization of the dried red pepper was analyzed to elucidate the change of pesticide residues in fresh red pepper by oven-drying. The number of pesticides detected from peen pepper, fresh red pepper, dried red pepper and pepper powder were 9, 12, 12, and 17, respectively, including 10 pesticides (one fungicide and nine insecticides) which were exceeded the maximum residue limits (MRLs). The exceeding rate of the MRL were higher in dried red pepper and pepper powder than in green pepper and fresh red pepper. Although some pesticides in peppers and pepper powder exceeded the MRLs, their estimated daily intake(EDI) were less than 1.6% of their acceptable daily intakes(ADIs), suggesting that it would be estimated to safe. By oven-drying of fresh red pepper at $65^{\circ}C$ for 72 hours, the weight of dried red pepper was from 1/5.9 from 1/7.8 of fresh red pepper, while the concentration of pesticide residue in dried red pepper increased from 1.7 to 8.2 times, suggesting that further reconsideration was required for the MRL of pepper powder.

  • The results of examining total soluble solid, reducing sugar, antioxidant and sensory properties regarding LTD (Liriope Tuber Dried), LTSD (Liriope Tuber Steamed and Dried), LTASD (Liriope Tuber Alcohol-Steamed and Dried), LTDR (LTD Roasted), LTSDR (LTSD Roasted) and LTASDR (LTASD Roasted) are as follows : Total soluble solid content of the roasted samples (LTDR, LTSDR and LTASDR) was more than those of all dried samples (LTD, LTSD and LTASD). According to roasting conditions, total sugar and reducing sugar are significantly greater than the raw and dried sample (LTD) in all heat-treated samples. The browning index was significantly higher in all roasted samples. In particular, LTASDR had a high browning index. Further, the antioxidative activity of the roasted LT samples were higher than that of all dried LT samples. In particular, the LTASDR sample showed significantly high figures in DPPH scavenging activity, ABTS scavenging activity, Nitrite scavenging activity and xanthine oxidase inhibitory activity. Sensory properties showed an increased acceptance in all evaluation items among roasted samples. In this study, hot water extracts of steamed or alcohol-steamed roasted LT samples had a higher antioxidative effect than that of LTD or LTDR and attained positive results by getting high scores in the overall sensory evaluation. Therefore, when using Liriope tuber in making beverages or herbal recipes, it is appropriate to dry and roast before steaming or spreading with alcohol when treating LT.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate the sustainable housing teaching-learning process plan aimed to achieve the global SDGs through home economics class in middle school that is based on the ADDIE model. The overall objective of the plan was to contribute to cultivating students' sustainable housing values and to creating sustainable lifestyle through everyday practice. The plan consisting of 4 lessons contained various activity and visual resources(4 individual and 4 team activity sheets, 4 reading texts, 1 homework sheet and 1 evaluation sheet, and 7 videos) for students and (4 sets of ppt and 4 reading texts) for teachers. The theme and team activities of each lesson were related to 2~7 targets of 2~3 SDGs, in total 11 targets of 5 SDGs. The plan was implemented to 4 classes of 127 senior students at Y middle school in Cheongju city during the period from the 29th of August to the 18th of September, 2019. The results showed that students were very positive and highly satisfied with not only practical contents but also adequacy of resources and activities of the whole 4-lessons, so that they actively participated in the lessons more than usual and looked forward to learning more about it. They thoroughly enjoyed various team activities such as brain writing, mandal art, visual thinking, making UCC, and planning the sustainable village as well as writing a short reflective journal at the end of each lesson. Students also reported that they highly accomplished the goal of each lesson and the overall objective. It could be concluded that the teaching-learning process plan of 4-lessons could contribute to cultivating students' sustainable housing values and to creating sustainable lifestyle through practicing everyday life. It indicates that home economics is one of the major subjects to contribute to the attainment of global issue of SDGs for OECD education 2030 and to educate the practically acting global citizen.

  • Purpose : Syncope is relatively common in children and adolescents. Among the etiologies of syncope, neurocardiogenical syncope is the most common, but it is often confounded with seizure. We investigated the clinical features of patients under the age of 15 with neurocardiogenical syncope, compared to patients with neurologic disorders including epilepsy. Methods : Among the children who visited the Department of Pediatrics at Cheongju St. Mary's Hospital and Chungbuk National University Hospital from March 2005 to February 2007, we retrospectively analyzed 69 patients whose chief complaint was syncope. We classified the patients by syncope etiology and made comparisons between the neurocardiogenical syncope (NCS) group and the neurological disorders (ND) group regarding to age; location; time and season in which syncope occurred; associated symptoms, including seizures, provocation factors; prodromes; duration of syncope; frequency of previous syncope; birth history; associated disease; past medical history; family history; neurological exam; physical exam; laboratory findings; electrocardiography; electroencephalography (EEG); head-up tilt test; brain CT; and MRI. Results : Among 69 syncope patients, 53 (76.8%) were in the NCS group and 11 (15.9%) were in the ND group. There were no statistically significant differences between the two study groups except for the presence of prodromes and EEG abnormalities. The presence of prodromes in the NCS group was more common than in the ND group [46.9% (23/49) vs. 9.1% (1/11), (P=0.038)]. The EEG abnormality in the ND group was more common than in the NCS group [90% (9/10) vs. 5.8% (3/52), (P<0.01)]. Conclusion : Our study suggests that detailed history-taking, including that concerning prodromes, is important for the accurate diagnosis of neurocardiogenical syncope, and EEG should be obtained if neurological disorders are suggested.
