  • The objective of this study was to examine the relation between delinquency and career maturity in school adolescents and to determine whether activities for enhancing career maturity can have protective effects against juvenile delinquencies. Research questions for this study are: first, how serious school adolescents' delinquencies are; and second, what relation there is between delinquency and career maturity in school adolescents. Third, how different is school adolescents' career maturity according to their experience in delinquencies? The results of this study were as follows. First, 55.8% of the school adolescents committed one or more of the 14 types of delinquent acts included in the delinquency inventory during the last one year, and the percentage was higher among male students than among female ones. Second, no correlation was observed between the school adolescents' overall delinquency level and overall career maturity. According to the sub-factors of career maturity, however, the overall delinquency level was in a negative correlation with objectiveness and a positive correlation with independence/decisiveness. That is, objectiveness was higher in the group without experiences in delinquencies than in the group with such experiences. and Type II status offenses (truancy, runaway) was in a negative correlation with overall career maturity, and in a negative correlation with objectiveness and confidence. Third, no significant difference was observed in career maturity between those with experience in delinquencies and those without. Among the sub-factors of career maturity, however, objectiveness was higher in those without experience in delinquencies than in those with. and Overall career maturity, and objectiveness and confidence among the sub-factors of career maturity were significantly higher in those without experience in Type II (truancy, runaway) status offenses than those with. The results of this study suggest that the objectiveness of career maturity can be a protective factor against juvenile delinquency. Furthermore, they suggest that activities for enhancing career maturity may protect adolescents from Type II status offenses. These results may provide basic materials necessary to develop career counseling approaches and interventions strategies for preventing school adolescents' delinquencies.

  • This study conducted a comparison analysis of the differences by scope between juvenile delinquents, under sentence of juvenile protective disposition, and normal middle high school boys' self-esteem and sociality; it aims to search for the correctional policy to prevent juvenile delinquency. I conducted a survey, as a sampling target, of students (84) at Daedeok Juvenile Reformatory, located in Daejeon-si, Korea, and the normal middle high school boys (230). The results of analysis showed that in the analysis of self-esteem difference, juvenile delinquents were found high in the global self-esteem and school-academic self-esteem, but the normal adolescents were found high only in the scope of family-parents self-esteem. In leadership, a subordinate scope of sociality, juvenile delinquents showed the high result, and in independence and cooperativity, normal adolescents were found high. In conclusion, as the distinction between self-esteem and sociality is different by scope, depending on the individual's characteristic and environment, it suggests that the correctional policy through the customized plan is effective at preventing delinquency.

And then the cyber-delinquency frequency of adolescents were analyzed through the panel tobit random-effect model. As a result of analyzing the factors affecting cyber-delinquency frequency, Adult media commitment, computer use time, and cell phone dependency increased cyber-delinquency frequency. On the other hand, among the parenting attitudes, the attitude of supervising attentively and adolescents' age-increasing decreased cyber-delinquency frequency.

However, in terms of relationship with friends, better relationship led to lower level of game addiction but higher level of delinquency. Second, as a result of verifying mediator effect of game addiction by decomposing the effects of relationship with family, teachers and friends on delinquency, they all demonstrated negative mediator effect. Based on the results I discussed social welfare intervention methods for game addiction in order to understand and prevent school adolescents' delinquency.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the paths of the related variables that exert an influence upon the increase in mild and serious delinquencies of part-time work adolescents. Based on differential association theory, social control theory and power resource theory, the research model was composed and analyzed through structural equation model. Data came from survey which was done by fifteen high schools located in Seoul, and 201 questionnaire of returned were used for analysis. The results were congruent with theoretical expectations. The relationship between work hour per week and delinquency was mediated by delinquent propensity of fellow workers, amount of spending money and school adjustment. In conclusion, various theoretical and practical implications for social work practice focusing on the part time work students were discussed. Enforcement of regulation and revision of current law and various ways for helping and supervising working students in school, family and working places are needed.

  • The aim of this study was to examine growth trajectories of delinquent behaviors during adolescence. In addition, the effects of protective and risk factors that might account for individual difference in the level of delinquent behaviors and in the rate of change were examined. Four waves of data in the Korea Youth Panel Survey(KYPS) were used to analyze the linear growth modeling. The sample consisted of 3346 adolescents who were assessed at 4 measurement waves with approximately 1-year intervals. The results showed significant individual differences in both final level of delinquent behaviors and in the rate of change across 3 measurement occasions. Adolescent gender, family's socioeconomic background predicted the final level and the rate of change of delinquent behaviors. The protective effects of positive parenting and self-control were significantly associated with problem behaviors and the risk effects of the association with deviant peers and negative stigma were significant on the final level of delinquency. Self-control and deviant peer affiliation had differential influences over time significantly. Practice and policy implications as well as further research topic were discussed in the light of searching for important factors in preventing adolescent problem behaviors.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore the process that youths get involved in delinquent behavior after runaway. The experiences of runaway youths are studied interpretively, so that interactive features between situations and the youths are revealed. In this way, it is expected that directions in social services to prevent and intervene with delinquent behaviors of runaway youths can be suggested. Eleven youths who have experienced running-away participated in the in-depth interviews. Their narratives are interpreted through the procedures of interpretive interactionism by Denzin(1989). Five phases of the delinquency process have been discovered: Using personal resources, getting help from new relationships, exploring alternatives to survive, learning delinquent way of living, and living independently through delinquency. Interpreted contextually, it has been founded that delinquency is a behavior to survive and a developmental process on the street, taking place in a situation of blocked communication, nevertheless within people's networks. Thus, it is suggested that the problem of runaways are not to be treated narrowly as responsibilities of the youths themselves or their families, but to be approached from the viewpoint of providing social service systems that work as a safety network and offer alternatives for the youths to survive, to resolve their troubles, and to keep healthy lives.
