A moment redistribution method was developed for earthquake design of reinforced concrete moment-resisting frames. For a frame designed with strong column-weak beam, the moment redistribution mechanism was investigated. Based on the result, the relationship between redistributed moment and plastic rotation in plastic hinges was established. By using the relationship, we developed a method for the evaluation of plastic rotations during the moment redistribution, addressing the effects of various design parameters including member stiffness, load condition, and plastic mechanism of structure.

As a reinforcement material for RC members, the modified epoxy mortar has been reported one of the superior materials since the material can improve the load capacity and the seismic performance of the RC members. However, there were few experimental studies and analytical research for improving seismic performance with the material. This study is to propose an effective reinforcement plan for RC Ordinary Moment Resisting Frame (OMRF) with the evaluation of seismic performance and economic analysis. For the objective, first, the load-deflection curve of a simple beam specimen was compared with the analytical results. Second, a 5-story RC OMRF structure was designed only for gravity load and the alternatives for seismic reinforcement were suggested. Third, pushover analysis was executed for evaluation of design coefficients and seismic performance of the structures. Finally, an effective reinforcement plan was suggested based on the results of quantity take-off and economic analysis. The findings of this study can be utilized as the basic data when the modified epoxy mortar is applied to practice for improving the seismic performance of RC members.
Moment frames have been widely used in building construction. In current design codes, concrete moment frames are classified into ordinary, intermediate, and special moment resisting concrete frames (OMRCF, IMRCF, SMRCF)). The objective of this study is to investigate the seismic behavior of columns in ordinary moment resisting concrete frames (OMRCF) and intermediate moment resisting concrete frames (IMRCF). For this purpose 3 story OMRCF and IMRCF buildings were designed and detailed in compliance to ACI 318 (2002) and KCI (1999). In this study the buildings were assumed to be located in seismic zone 1 classified by UBC (1997). This study considered the columns in the 1st story since these columns shall resist the largest axial and lateral forces during an earthquake. Eight 2/3 scale column specimens were made for representing the upper part and lower part of exterior and interior columns of the OMRCF and the IMRCF Quasi-static reversed cyclic loading was applied to each specimen with a constant or varying axial load. Test results show that seismic behaviors of columns are influenced by existence of lap splices, axial force levels, and lateral reinforcement at possible plastic hinging region. However, the effect of such variables strongly co-related to each other.

For safe and economical design to provide strong earthquake resistance, the moment redistribution and plastic rotation of structures and their members needs to be evaluated. To achieve this, an earthquake design method was developed using secant stiffness analysis. To address the variation of member stiffness due to plastic rotation and moment redistribution, a structure was modeled with a beam-column element with non-rigid end connections (NREC element). Secant stiffness for the NREC element was determined based on the ductility demands of the structure and members. By performing a conventional linear analysis for the secant stiffness model, redistributed moments and plastic rotations of the members were computed. The proposed method was applied to a moment frame and two dual systems. The design results were verified using detailed nonlinear analyses.
In this study, the seismic details of a concrete-encased, U-shaped steel beam-to-RC column connection were developed. Three specimens of the beam-to-column connection were tested under cyclic loading to evaluate the seismic performance of the connection. The test parameters were the beam depth and the column section shape. The depths of the composite beams were 610 and 710 mm, including the slab depth. For the RC columns, a square section and a circular section were used. Special details using diagonal re-bars and exterior diaphragm plates were used to strengthen the connections with the rectangular and circular columns, respectively. The test results showed that the specimens exhibited good strength, deformation, and energy dissipation capacities. The deformation capacity exceeded 4% interstory drift angle, which is the requirement for the Special Moment Frame.

Progressive collapse is defined as a collapse caused by sectional destruction of a structural member which links to other surrounding structures. Currently the design guidelines for the prevention of progressive collapse is not available in Korea. So, structural engineers have a difficulty in evaluating progressive collapse. In this study, the static and dynamic analysis to evaluate the methods and procedures are conducted using commercial analysis program for RC moment resisting frames. According to the study, DCR value of RC moment resisting frame system based on code in Korea is over 2 and it shows that it can't provide alternate load paths due to the progressive collapse. And additional reinforcement should be considered for the progressive collapse resistance. As a result of vertical deflection and DCR value of linear static analysis and linear dynamic analysis, the results of dynamic analysis were underestimated more than the result of static analysis. Thus, the dynamic coefficient value of 2 provides conservative estimation.
The composite frame system with reinforced concrete column and steel beam has some advantages in the structural efficiency by complementing the shortcomings between the two systems. The system, however has also a lot of problems in practical design and construction process due to the material dissimilarities. Considering these circumstances, this research is aimed at the development of the composite structural system which enables the steel beams to be connected to the R/C columns with higher structural safety and economy. Basically the proposed connection system is composed of four split tees, structural angles reinforced by stiffener, high strength steel rods, connecting plates and shear plates. The structural tests have been carried out to verify the moment transfer mechanism from beam flange to steel rods or connecting plates through the angle reinforced by siffener. The four prototype specimens have been tested until the flange of beam reached the plastic states. From the tests, no distinct material dissimilarities between concrete and steel have been detected and the stress transfer through wide flange beam - structural angle - high strength steel rod or connecting plate is very favorable.
An experimental study was performed to evaluate the seismic performance of beam-column connections using 600 MPa re-bars for beam flexural reinforcement. Three full scale specimens of interior beam-column connection and two specimens of exterior beam-column connection were tested under cyclic loading. The specimens were designed to satisfy the requirements of Special Moment Frame according to current design code. The structural performance of the specimens with 600 MPa re-bar were compared with that of the specimen with 400 MPa re-bars. The test results showed that bond-slip increased in the beam-column joint. However, the load-carrying capacity, deformation capacity, and energy dissipation capacity of the specimens with 600 MPa re-bar were comparable to those of the specimens with 400 MPa re-bars.

In this study, finite element analyses of masonry infilled frames using a general purpose FE program, ABAQUS, were conducted. Analysis models consisted of the bare frame, infilled frames with masonry wall thickness of 0.5B and 1.0B, respectively. The masonry walls were constructed using the concrete bricks which were generally used in Korea as infilled wall. The material properties of frames and masonry for the analysis were obtained from material tests. However, four times increased the tensile strength was used for 1.0B wall, which is seemingly due to the differences in locating the bricks. The force-displacement relation and development of crack from the FE analysis were very similar to those from the experiments. From the FEA results, contact force between the frame and masonry, distribution of shear force and bending moments in frame members were analyzed. Obtained contact stress shows a trianglur distribution, and the contact length for 0.5B speciment and 1.0B specimen were close to the value estimated using ASCE 41-06 equation and ASCE 41-13 equation, respectively. Obtained shear force and bending moment distribution seems to replicate actual behavior which originates from the contact stress and gap between the frame and masonry.

In this study the probability and the reliability-based seismic performance evaluation procedure proposed in the FEMA-355F was applied to a reinforced concrete moment frame building. For the FEMA procedure, which was originally developed for steel moment frame structures, to be applied to other structural systems, the capacity should be re-defined and the factors reflecting the uncertainties related to capacity and demand need to be determined. To perform the evaluation procedure a prototype building was designed per IBC 2003, and inelastic dynamic analyses were conducted applying site-specific ground motions to determine the parameters for performance evaluation. According to the analysis results, distribution of the determined capacities turned out to be relative]y smaller than that of the demands, which showed that the defined capacity was reasonable. It was also shown that the prototype building satisfied the target performance since the determined confidence levels exceeded the otjectives for both local and global collapses.
