  • Accurate estimation of irregular wave transformation when the waves propagate from deep water to shallow water region is very important for the design of coastal structures and establishing beach erosion control. In this study. the transformation of directional spectrum is tested numerically using a conservation equation for energy flux and. based upon the joint distribution of wave height. period and wave direction. shoaling effects are predicted in the shallow water region. The applicability of the proposed procedure is verified through comparison with field observation data.

  • With the increase of the frequency in large-scale floods and natural disasters, the demands for highly accurate numerical river models are also rapidly growing. Generally, flows in rivers are modeled with previously developed and well-established numerical models based on shallow water equations. However, the so-far-developed models reveal a lot of limitations in the analysis of discontinuous flow or flow which needs accurate modeling. In this study, the numerical shallow water model based on the discontinuous Galerkin method was applied to the simulation of one-dimensional transcritical flow, including dam break flows and a flow over a hump. The favorable agreement was observed between numerical solutions and analytical solutions.

  • To investigate the inundation of tsunamis in the vicinity of a circular island, a numerical model has been developed based on quadtree grids. The governing equations of the model are the nonlinear shallow-water equations. The governing equations are discretized explicitly by using a finite difference leap-frog scheme on adaptive hierarchical quadtree grids. The quadtree grids are generated around a circular island where refined with rectangular or circular domain. Obtained numerical results have been verified by comparing to available laboratory measurements of run-up heights. A good agreement has been achieved.

  • In this study, flood inundations have been simulated by using the numerical model FLUMEN solving the shallow-water equations with a finite volume method. Before applying to a real problem, the numerical model is first applied to simplified problems. Obtained numerical results are verified by comparing with available analytical solutions and laboratory measurements. Reasonable agreements are observed. The model is then applied to a simulation of flood events with real geometries. The results of this study will provide basic information to make a flood inundation map.

  • A two-dimensional numerical model for tidal currents based on the depth averaged equation is developed. The mode1 employs a rectangular grid system for its simplicity in the application of complicate coastal shore lines. To raise computing efficiency, implicit approximate factorization scheme is implemented in solving governing equations. An upwind-differencing is used to discretize convective terms, which provides a numerical dissipation automatically and suppresses any oscillations caused by nonlinear instabilities. Some numerical tests are made against the analytic solutions of a linearized shallow water equation to validate the developed numerical scheme, and comparisons of the model prediction with the analytic solution are satisfactory. As a real application, the tidal currents are computed on the Inchon area where the tidal currents are important for the design of new canal which is under construction.

  • A depth-integrated model with an approximate Riemann solver for flux computation of the shallow water equations was applied to hydraulic jump experiments. Due to the hydraulic jump, different flow regimes occur simultaneously in a single channel. Therefore, the Weisbach resistance coefficient, which reflects flow conditions rather than the Manning roughness coefficient that is independent of depth or flow, has been employed for flow resistance. Simulation results were in good agreement with experimental results, and it was confirmed that Manning coefficients converted from Weisbach coefficients were appropriately set in the supercritical and subcritical flow reaches, respectively. Limitations of the shallow water equations that rely on hydrostatic assumptions have been revealed in comparison with hydraulic jump experiments, highlighting the need for the introduction of a non-hydrostatic shallow-water flow model.
