This study is a field application of high density concrete for a radiation shield at Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute. There are each process of investigation of using materials, producing arrangements, and field application products to satisfy presented specifications.
A series of conductive filler were prepared with electroless plating method. Base conductive materials of the filler were nickel and copper. The cores were prepared with Nylon 6 and rayon in different aspect ratio. Also, various complexes were made with ABS resin and conductive filler with different filler feed ratio. The conductivity of the filler was measured with conductivity analyzer and the size distributions of fillers was measured with laser particle size analyzer. Electromagnetic wave shielding efficiency of each complex film was measured with flange circular coaxial transmission line sample holder within the 1MHz$\sim$1GHz bandwidth range. From this study, the conductivity of filers surpass that of other carbon films. It is available that the filler made of fibrous materials can be applied in plastic molding industry of electric appliances as a EMI filler.

Due to the increasing number of wireless communication devices in mmWave frequency bands, there is a high demand for electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding and heat dissipating materials to avoid device malfunctions. This paper proposes an EMI shielding composite film with a high heat dissipation characteristic. To achieve this, a conductive grid is integrated with a polymer-based composite layer including magnetic and heat dissipating filler materials. A high shielding effectiveness (>40 dB), low reflection shielding effectiveness (<3 dB), high thermal conductivity (>10 W/m·K), thin thickness (<500 ㎛) are simultaneously achieved with a tailored design of composite layer compositions and grid geometries in 5G communication band of 26.5 GHz.

Purpose: The objective of the present study was to histologically evaluate durability and bone regeneration capacity of new synthetic membranes in comparison to clinically available collagen membrane. Material and methods: To the skulls of 12 rabbits, we created 4 bone defects of 6 mm in diameter on each of them. Each of defects were covered with at least one of 5 membranes; No membrane, Collagen ($Ossix^{TM}$), PLGA, HA-coated-PLGA and HA-PLGA/PLGA. After 4, 8, 12 weeks, we cut the skulls and dyed with H-E. And then, the histologic observation was done. Results: In current study, the control group which did not use the membrane showed bone regeneration at 12 weeks and covered the bone defect partially. New bones were formed through the underneath of endocranium, and the upper defect was filled with connective tissues and fats. Collagen membrane ($Ossix^{TM}$) showed new bones after 4 weeks, and they were formed through the membrane which maintained until 12 weeks. PLGA, HA-coated-PLGA, HA-PLGA/PLGA showed bone regeneration after 4 weeks and after 8 weeks, they mostly filled defects. At 12 weeks, we could find new bones and previous bones almost look alike and also, they united well. Membranes were unnoticeable after 4 weeks and were absorbed. Conclusion: Bone formation and maturation of PLGA, HA-coated-PLGA and HA-PLGA/PLGA were faster than the control group. They showed no difference on the application of HA and after 4 weeks, they were absorbed.
The cases of radiographic inspection for medical diagnosis in Korea have been continuously increasing year after year, which pays particularly more attention to CT which occupies over the half of medical radiation exposure. To find an effective alternative for reducing radiation exposure, the researchers conducted comparative experiments using some shields made of bismuth, aluminum 6mm, and silicone 22mm. These shielding materials have been used to reduce the entrance surface dose (ESD) on lenses, maintaining the CT number, noise, and uniformity in brain CT scanning which forms the largest part in CT scanning these days. These experiments showed that the doses in the spiral scan parallel to IOML and the conventional scan in Bismuth were 26.41% and 17.52%, respectively; in Aluminum 18.24% and 9.39%; in Silicone 19.47% and 14.39% lower than compared with those in the cases without any shields. In the items of the CT number, noise, and uniformity, the bismuth shield satisfied exceedingly the standards of the phantom image test while aluminum and silicone were within. To keep the graphic quality and get good shielding effect, we recommend the silicone shield which can be manufactured and purchased with ease.
The Computed tomography (CT) scan can have high radiation in a few tests, and this risk is significant given that it is often repeated in one patient. In children, the incidence of radiation-induced cancer is reported because organs are growing, are more sensitive to radiation. 3D printing has recently been studied to be applied to various applications as a research field for 3D printing applications, research on fabrication of radiation shields and materials has been conducted. The purpose of the 3D printer is to replace the existing panel-type shields and to make customized designs according to the shape of the human body. Therefore, research on 3D information processing to be input to the 3D printer is also necessary. In this study, 3D data of the human body surface, which is the preliminary step of the manufacture of patient-specific eye shield using stereo vision depth map technology, was studied. This study aims to increase the possibility of three-dimensional output. As a result of experimenting with this method, which is relatively simple compared with other methods of 3D information processing, the minimum coordinates for 3D information are extracted. The results of this study provided the advantages and limitations of stereo images using natural light and will be the basic data for the manufacture of eye shields in the future.

In this paper, the sizing removal condition for the pretreatment of composite materials is obtained numerically by applying an image processing algorithm and nickel-plated carbon fiber is fabricated by a dry process method to enhance its electromagnetic shielding performance. Sizings that are wrapped in a polymer type material during the manufacturing of carbon fiber should be removed for dry coating. A numerical value, that is the correlation, can be obtained by determining the regular pattern of the carbon fiber in the image taken by a scanning electron microscope (SEM) after the sizing is removed. The application of the proposed numerical method to the SEM image of the fiber after the sizing is removed with solution, compressed air, solution and compressed air (hybrid), showed that this method of eliminating the sizing is superior to the hybrid method. Then, by spreading the carbon fiber roll with the sizing removed, we were able to produce nickel plated carbon fiber by the roll-to-roll sputtering method. The electromagnetic shielding performance of the fabricated 30, 40 and 100 nickel coated carbon fibers was measured. The Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology evaluated the electromagnetic shielding performance of the 100 nickel-coated carbon fiber to have a maximum value of 73.2 (dB) and a minimum value of 66.7 (dB). This is similar to the electromagnetic shielding rate of copper and shows that this material can be used as a cable for EV / HEV automobiles.

Development of simple and efficient method for large-scale production of mechanically strong and electrically conductive graphene fiber is highly desirable for practical applications, such as fiber-reinforced composites, wearable electronics, and electromagnetic irradiation shielding. Here, we present a facile approach for the preparation of amine-functionalized graphene fibers by simple wet-spinning of diamine-functionalized graphene oxide (GO-$NH_2$), which is used because of its synthetic convenience, good dispersity, and scalable production with low cost. The amine-functionalized graphene fiber shows high electrical and mechanical properties compared to pristine graphene oxide fiber due to the electrostatic interaction between amine groups and electronegative functional groups of graphene oxide.
The electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding is very essential for commercial and military purposes. We fabricated multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT)/epoxy composites and studied the electromagnetic characteristics of the composites before we study the characteristics of MWNT-added glass fiber-reinforced composites. After setting up the fabrication process, we measured the permittivity of MWNT/epoxy composites with process variables and MWNT concentrations in X-band (8.2GHz~12.4GHz). We also observed re-aggregation phenomenon of MWNTs and investigated its effect on the permittivity. The permittivity of the composites was influenced by the degree of dispersion of MWNTs and increased almost linearly as MWNT concentration increases.
