  • In this paper, a new bushing model for vehicle dynamics analysis using Bouc-Wen hysteretic model is proposed. Bushing components of a vehicle suspension system are tested to capture the nonlinear behavior of rubber bushing elements using the MTS 3-axes rubber test machine. The results of the tests are used to define parameters in Bouc-Wen bushing model, which was employed to represent the hysteretic characteristics of the bushing. Bushing parameters are obtained by using genetic algorithms and sensitivity analysis of parameters are also carried out. ADAMS program was used for the identification process and VisualDOC program was employed to find the optimal parameters. A half-car simulation was carried out to show the usefulness of the developed bushing model.

  • An independently driven electric corner module cannot be applied to an actual vehicle without some difficulty, because of vehicle safety problems in the case of malfunctions and degraded ride and handling performance owing to the increase in the unsprung mass. In this study, a simulator is developed to evaluate the vehicle driving performance in order to solve ride and handling problems. Component modeling of a small-sized electric vehicle with an independently driven electric corner module is performed using MATLAB/Simulink. The vehicle is modeled by using CarSim, which can be used to analyze the vehicle maneuvers with 27 DOFs. The control algorithm for the improvement of vehicle driving safety and ride and handling performance is validated by using the developed simulator.

  • This study was carried out to investigate and alleviate the vibration problem of commercial high-speed trains. First, the measurement of the carbody vibration was performed, in order to determine the vibration level of the high-speed train. The measurement result showed that the vibration level of the driver cab was higher than that of the passenger car and that the vibration became bigger toward the trailing end of the train. The vertical vibration of the driver cab and passenger car was larger than the transverse vibration, and the maximum value of the vibration in the ballast section was larger than that in the concrete section. A dynamic analysis was carried out to improve the vibration of the KTX-Sancheon train. The results of the analysis showed that it is necessary to reduce the vibration of the driver cab and both ends of the passenger cars. To reduce the vibration of the driver cab, it was recommended that the stiffness of the secondary coil spring be reduced and the damping coefficient of the secondary vertical damper be increased. It was found that the failure of the suspension system could be the origin of the vibration problem of the high-speed train. The proper management of wheel wear plays an important role in the improvement of the operation efficiency and reduction of the carbody vibration of high-speed trains, and research is underway to change the present wheel profile to increase the mileage between wheel turning.

  • In the electric railway vehicles, securing stable current collection performance is an important factor which determines the quality of operation and the maximum speed. In order to predict such current collection performance, various analysis methods have been proposed for a long time. Also, investigations for improving the accuracy of the results and the efficiency of the analysis process have been performed. In this paper, a method for the efficiency improvement has been proposed. This method is based on the basic concept that the system equations of motion of a catenary numerical model include only interactive range with a pantograph. In this paper, an algorithm and generalized process for applying proposed method are introduced. Also, validity of the results and utility of the method was verified and studied.

  • Multi-car rear-end collision accidents have three categories: sequential collision from the rear which is commonly referred to as chain reaction collision, sequential collision from the front, and mixed-order collision. This paper suggests several effective methods of reconstruction analysis for multi-car rear-end collision accidents. First, by incorporating the traditional empirical method which uses vehicle damage caused by brake dive and passenger injuries, with results of theoretical analysis made within mechanics of rigid body, it is made possible for the method to be put to immediate practical use. A methodology to precisely analyze multi-car rear-end collision accidents was suggested using a simulation program simultaneously with a video event data recorder which is starting to be widely used in domestic vehicles. To go beyond the simple intuitive analysis of the video event data recorder, the simulation analysis based on the results of video analysis was executed to acquire various information, so that the causes and responsibility could be clearly stated.

  • In this paper, design parameters of dynamic vibration absorber, which is used to reduce bending vibrations of a vehicle drive line, is optimized. For obtaining the correct dynamic response characteristics, a flexible-body drive line is made by applying the flexibility data extracted from vibration analysis of propeller shafts to the drive line dynamic model. Inner tube mass, rubber stiffness and rubber damping coefficient of the dynamic vibration absorber are taken as design parameters for optimization. To minimize the vertical acceleration of the drive line, a second-order regression equation of the objective function is generated by performing the central composite experimental design with 3 factors, 2 levels and 15 test runs. And the design parameters of the dynamic vibration absorber are determined by using optimization program. The vehicle model with optimized dynamic vibration absorber reduces the vertical acceleration peak of the drive line by 17.1 % in compared with the initial model.

  • The tires, suspension type, and steering system can all cause pulling during braking. Among these, a drag link steering system and leaf-type suspension system are significant causes of vehicle pulling. In this study, the pulling problem is analyzed using the vehicle analysis program "ADAMS/CAR." The drag link and leaf spring behavior is analyzed to find the key reason for pulling. After this, the optimization program "Visual DOC" is used with "ADAMS/CAR" to find a steering link connection point to reduce pulling. After conducting this simulation, K&C (kinematic & compliance) test simulation with a modified connection point is conducted to determine whether the vehicle performance improves. Through a full braking simulation, it is verified that the pulling distance is reduced at braking.

  • Thermal energy generated because of the friction between the disc and pad is transferred to both sides and causes thermal expansion of the material, which affects the contact pressure distribution. This phenomenon, which is called thermoelastic instability (TEI), is affected by the natural mode of a disc. TEI results in the formation of a hot spot and causes hot judder vibrations. In this study, three-dimensional analysis of the hot judder of a ventilated disc for automotives was performed by using the commercial finite element analysis program, SAMCEF. The intermediate processor based on a staggered approach was used to exchange the result data of the mechanical and thermal model. The hot spot was formed on the surface of the disc, and the number of hot spots was compared with the natural mode of the disc.

  • Monte-Carlo simulation technique has advantages over deterministic simulation in various engineering analysis since Monte-Carlo simulation can take into consideration of scattering of various design variables, which is inherent characteristics of physical world. In this work, Monte-Carlo simulation of steady-state cornering behavior of a truck with design variables like hard points and busing stiffness. The purpose of the simulation is to improve understeer gradient of the truck, which exhibits a small amount of instability when the lateral acceleration is about 0.4g. Through correlation analysis, design variables that have high impacts on the cornering behavior were selected, and significant performance improvement has been achieved by appropriately changing the high impact design variables.

  • This paper presents a simplified finite element tire model for vehicle dynamics analysis. The classical finite element tire model was too big to simulate dynamic properties of the tire. In the simplified model, number of nodes of the tire model was dramatically reduced, and thus its simulation time was several times less than the classical model. Bead, carcass, belt which have an important role to the dynamic characteristics of tire were replaced by simple axis symmetric membrane elements. Also the rebar element was deleted. The tire model has been verified by comparing vertical stiffness data of the simulation model to the test data.
