  • A degenerated differential pair has been widely used as a standard topology for digitally programmable CMOS VGAs. A variable degeneration resistor has been implemented using a resistor string or R-2R ladder with MOSFET switches. However, in the VGAs using these conventional methods, low-voltage and high-speed operation is very hard to achieve due to the dc voltage drop over the degeneration resistor. To overcome the problem a new variable degeneration resistor is proposed where the dc voltage drop is almost removed. The proposed gain control scheme makes it easy to implement a low-voltage and high-speed VGA. This paper describes the problems existed in conventional methods, the principle and advantages of the proposed scheme, and their performance comparison in detail. A CMOS VGA cell is designed using the proposed degeneration resistor. The 3dB bandwidths are greater than 650㎒ and the gain errors are less than 0.3dB in a gain control range from -12dB to +12dB in 6dB steps. It consumes 3.1㎃ from a 2.5V supply voltage.

  • Light Emitting Diodes(LEDs) are widely utilized not only in lighting but also in various applications such as mobile phones, automobiles, displays, etc. The integration of LED lighting with communication, specifically Visible Light Communication(VLC), has gained significant attention. This paper presents the direct implementation and experimentation of a Vehicle-to-Vehicle(V2V) Visible Light Communication system using commonly used red and yellow LEDs in typical vehicles. Data collected from the leading vehicle, including positional and speed information, were modulated using Non-Return-to-Zero On-Off Keying(NRZ-OOK) and transmitted through the rear lights equipped with red and yellow LEDs. A photodetector(PD) received the visible light signals, demodulated the data, and restored it. To mitigate the interference from fluorescent lights and natural light, a PD for interference removal was installed, and an interference removal device using a polarizing filter and a differential amplifier was employed. The performance of the proposed visible light communication system was analyzed in an ideal case, indoors and outdoors environments. In an outdoor setting, maintaining a distance of approximately 30[cm], and a transmission rate of 4800[bps] for inter-vehicle data transmission, the red LED exhibited a performance improvement of approximately 13.63[dB], while the yellow LED showed an improvement of about 11.9[dB].

  • This paper proposes a compact-sized surface myoelectric sensor for the myoelectric hand prosthesis. To fit the surface myoelectric sensor in the socket for the myoelectric hand prosthesis, the sensor should be a compact size. The surface myoelectric sensor is. composed of a skin interface and a single processing circuit that are mounted on a single package. The skin interface has one reference and two input electrodes, and the reference electrode is located in the center of two input electrodes. In this paper we propose two types of sensors with the circle- and bar-shaped reference electrode, but all input electrodes are the bar-shaped. The metal material of the electrodes is the stainless steel (SUS440) that endures sweat and wet conditions. Considering the conduction velocity and the median frequency of the myoelectric signal, we select the inter-electrode distance (IED) between two input electrodes as 18mm, 20mm, and 22 mm. The signal processing circuit consists of a differential amplifier with a band pass filter, a band rejection filter for rejecting 60Hz power-line noise, amplifiers, and a mean absolute value circuit. We evaluate the proposed sensor from the output characteristics according to the IED and the shape of the reference electrode. From the experimental results we show the surface myoelectric sensor with the 18mm IED and the bar-shaped reference electrode is suitable for the myoelectric hand prosthesis.

  • Digital TV tuner for 8-VSB modulation was developed with satisfying the requirements of ATSC. The double frequency conversion and the active tracking filter in the front-end were used to reduce interference of the adjacent channels and multi-channels, which suppress If beat and image band. However, it was impossible to get frequency mapping between tracking filter and first VCO(Voltage Controlled Oscillator) in the double conversion digital TV tuner differing from conventional NTSC tuner. This paper, therefore, suggests the available structure and a new method for automatic frequency selection by obtaining the mapping of frequency characteristic over tracking voltage and the combined hardware which compose of Micro-controller, EEPROM, D/A(Digital-to-Analog Converter), OP amp and switch driver to solve above problems.

  • Novel class-A bipolar current conveyor($CCII{\pm}$) with differential current output and its application to output current controllable CCII+ for electronic tuning systems are designed. The $CCII{\pm}$ is consists of conventional CCII+ and complementary cross current sources. The CCII+ with controllable the output current consists of the $CCII{\pm}$ and a current gain amplifier with single-ended current output. The simulation result shows that the $CCII{\pm}$ has current input impedance of $1.9{\Omega}$ and a good linearity for voltage and current follower. The proposed CCII+ has 3-dB cutoff frequency of 10MHz for the range over bias control current $100{\mu}A$ to 10mA. The range of output current control is four decade. The power dissipation of the CCII+ is 4.5mW at supply voltage of ${\pm}2.5V$.

  • Phase currents should be measured in real time for vector control of a 2-phase induction motor. Generally, the phase currents of the motor are measured using two Hall current sensors installed at the output terminal of an inverter. Unfortunately, Hall current sensors are expensive and uneconomical because a vector-controlled inverter for 2-phase induction motor is mainly used in low-power and low-price applications. This paper proposes a low-cost current measurement method using two shunt resistors instead of expensive Hall current sensors. The proposed method can measure the phase currents under all operating conditions of the motor. This method was applied to an experimental vector-controlled inverter for 2-phase induction motor of 220[V]/360[W] and was verified through computer simulations and experimentation.

  • This paper presents a bandpass filter using a current differencing transconductance amplifier (CDTA)s for application to low-voltage and low-power analog signal processing systems. The presented filter employs grounding and floating active inductors, which are composed of two or three CDTAs, and is capable of realizing all the standard functions of the filter without requiring any component matching criteria or extra active components. The HSPICE simulation result of the designed active bandpass filter showed that it had a 10MHz center frequency with -2.5dB attenuated bandwidth from 9.5 MHz to 10.5 MHz, and -50dB from 8 MHz to 17 MHz.

  • This Paper describes a chip design technique for body composition analyzer based on the BIA (Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis) method. All the functions of signal forcing circuits to the body, signal detecting circuits from the body, Micom, SRAM and EEPROMS are integrated in one chip. Especially, multi-frequency detecting method can be applied with selective band pass filter (BPF), which is designed in weak inversion region for low power consumption. In addition new full wave rectifier (FWR) is also proposed with differential difference amplifier (DDA) for high performance (small die area low power consumption, rail-to-rail output swing). The prototype chip is implemented with 0.35um CMOS technology and shows the power dissipation of 6 mW at the supply voltage of 3.3V. The die area of prototype chip is $5mm\times5mm$.

  • A new modulation technique - correlative encoded FSK (CEFSK) - for use in power and bandwidth limited digital communication system is proposed. CEFSK is free of ISI and generates output signals which have a smooth and continuous phase transition and a reduced envelope fluctuation by keeping correlation between amplitude and phases of two subsequent symbols. In comparison to conventional one-bit differential detected (1DD) GFSK, the performance of the 1DD-CEFSK in a non-linearly amplified (NLA) channel impaired by additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN), ISI and IM, is analyzed via computer simulation. The simulation result shows that, in an NLA single-channel, 1DD-CEFSK provides a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) advantage of up to 1.2dB and 0.8dB at BER of $1{\times}10^{-4}$ when input back-off (IBO) of HPA is -1.0dB and -3.0dB, respectively. For the same channel environment with multi-channel, 1DD-CEFSK outperforms 1DD-GFSK by 1.1dB in SNR, regardless of the value of IBO.

  • This paper presents a 5-Gb/s optical receiver circuit realized in a $0.13-{\mu}m$ CMOS technologies for the applications of high-speed digital interface. Exploiting modified RGC input stage at the front-end transimpedance amplifier, interleaving active feedback and source degeneration techniques at the limiting amplifier, the proposed optical receiver chip demonstrates the measured results of $72-dB{\Omega}$ transimpedance gain, 4.7-GHz bandwidth, and $400-mV_{pp}$differential output voltage swings up to the data rate of 5-Gb/s. Also, the chip dissipates 66mW in total from a single 1.2-V supply, and occupies the area of $1.6{\times}0.8mm^2$.
