The phenotyping of the sixth complement component (C6) was performed on plasma or serum samples from 383 unrelated Korean, by IEF and immunoblotting using anti-human C6 serum. Three common allotypes, C6 A, C6 B and C6 B2 and two rare allotypes, C6 Ml and C6 Mu were observed. The allele frequencies of C6*A, C6*B and C6*B2 were estimated to be 0.4399, 0.5144, 0.0392, respectively. These frequencies are similar to those of the Eastasian populations.
All known genomes (N=10) in the order Nitrosomonadales were analyzed to contain 9,808 and 908 gene clusters in their pan-genome and core genome, respectively. Analyses with reference genomes belonging to other orders in Betaproteobacteria revealed that sizes of pan-genome and core genome were dependent on the number of genomes compared and the differences of genomes within a group. The sizes of pan-genomes of the genera Nitrosomonas and Nitrosospira were 7,180 and 4,586 and core genomes, 1,092 and 1,600, respectively, which implied that similarity of genomes in Nitrosospira were higher than Nitrosomonas. The genomes of Nitrosomonas contributed mostly to the size of the pan-genome and core genomes of Nitrosomonadales. COG analysis of gene clusters showed that the J (translation, ribosomal structure and biogenesis) category occupied the biggest proportions (9.7-21.0%) among COG categories in core genomes and its proportion increased in the group which genetic distances among members were high. The unclassified category (-) occupied very high proportions (34-51%) in pan-genomes. Ninety seven gene clusters existed only in Nitrosomonadales and not in reference genomes. The gene clusters contained ammonia monooxygenase (amoA and amoB) and -related genes (amoE and amoD) which were typical genes characterizing the order Nitrosomonadales while they contained significant amount (16-45%) of unclassified genes. Thus, these exclusively-conserved gene clusters might play an important role to reveal genetic specificity of the order Nitrosomonadales.

Subtropical insect pests expand their habitats by migration to temperate zones along with global climate change. A subtropical insect pest, Maruca vitrata, is infesting leguminous crops including azuka beans in Korea and gives significant economic damages. Its great genetic variation raised an issue of the origin of a Korean M. vitrata population. To understand the genetic character of the Korean population, its cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 (cox 1) gene was sequenced and phylogenetically analyzed with other regional populations. The world populations of M. vitrata were grouped into three clusters: Asia-African, American, and Oceanian. The Korean population was classified into Asia-African cluster. To characterize the insecticide susceptibility of the Korean population, seven different insecticides (4 neutoxic insecticides, 1 insect growth regulator, 2 biopesticides) were assessed. Young larvae of M. vitrata were relatively susceptible to all tested insecticides. However, old larvae were much less susceptible than young larvae. No test insecticides effectively (> 50%) killed the old larvae of M. vitrata within 7 days.
We examined the genetic diversity in intra-populations of Korean shiner, Coreoleuciscus splendidus, in six major rivers (Bukhan, Namhan, Geum, Osipcheon, Nakdong and Seomjin river) of Korea based on two different mitochondrial genes, the mitochondrial cytochrome b and the 16S rRNA. Analysis of sequence variation in a 657-bp segment of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene revealed deep divergence among populations (98.2~99.9%) and high genetic diversity from geographically isolated populations. Intra-specific variation in this 697-bp segment of the 16S rRNA gene sequences was very low and nearly identical. Six isolate populations of C. splendidus showed a high similarity (97.7%~99.7%). This result may be indicative of a complex history of connection and isolation of the rivers in the Korea peninsula.
Morphometric and genetic analyses on six populations of the two subspecies of Cobitis koreensis were performed to investigate the geographic variation and to clarify their taxonomic status. No significant differences between subspecies were found. Puan population of C. k. pumilus tends to be smaller in numbers of cross bars and dorsal spots, than those of C. k. koreensis populations with no statistical significance. Average degree of genic variation among six populations of the two subspecies was A=1.5, P =37.3%, HD=0.053, and HG=0.097. Marginal populations of Samchog (C. k. koreensis) and Puan(C. k. pumilus) were least variable: A= 1.3, P=23.8%, HD=0.0l0, HG=0.043, and A= 1.2, P=19.0%, HD=0.029, HG=0.078 respectively. The difference between HD and HG in all populations may indicate a patchness distribution between demes within each population. Genetic similarities between the two subspecies were, on the average, S=0.894, and this value correspond to the average genetic similarities among five populations of C. k. koreensis (5=0.899). Chongup population of C. k. koreensis and Puan population of C. k. pumilus was most similar genetically (5 =0.931). The results of morphometric and genetic analysis in this study indicate that C. k. pumilus is not a valid subspecies and should be considered as a population of C. koreensis.

Genetic differences among nine land races of Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer) were examined using RAPD markers. Land races of Korean ginseng were collected from nine regions in Korea: Cheongwon, Guesan, Geumsan, Namwon, Pochun, Yangju, Yeoncheon, Yeongju. Out of 48 RAPD primers tested, 5 primers (OPA 7, OPA 13, URP 2, URP 3 and UBC 3) produced remarkable bands which showing polymorphisms among evaluated collections. Lower levels of genetic diversity were in detected same land races than among other land races. Genetic differences within and among land races indicate heterogeneity. These results indicate that cultivated ginseng in Korea is heterogeneous. Genetic similarity matrices of RAPD profiles were generated via coefficients of variation and the data were processed by the cluster analysis (UPGMA). When 90 collections were evaluated using selected 5 primers, those were clustered to 5 and 3 subgroups. These differences in genetic variation between land races of Korean ginseng implied the potential source for further breeding of Korean ginseng.
The study was conducted to determine the inherited properties of the MEB resistance to natural population of the small brown plant-hopper(Laodelphax striatelluss). The plant-hoppers were collected from the natural population of Naju area where the highest insecticide resistance of MEF to the green rice leaf hopper (Nephotettix cincticeps) have been examined in 1976. And Naju collections were crossed to the susceptible Lab stock to examine the MEP resistance in the $F_1,\;BC_1F_1\;and\;F_2$ and $F_2$ populations. Ail the data were analyzed by the probit method. There was a difference in MEP resistance between Naju collection and susceptible Lab stock, showing $LD_{50}$ value of the former was 0.0029ug/insect compared to 0.0008ug/insect for the later. The $LD_{50}$ values and dosage-mortality lines of the $F_1$ and $BC_1F_1$ tended to close their resistant parent. and it was considered that the character of the MEP resistance in the Naju collection of the small brown plant hopper was controlled by the genetic traits. However, $LD_{50}$ value and dosasage-mortality lines of the $F_2$ populations were intermediate to their parents, it would be conclusive that the trait will be governed by a interaction of the genes or factors rather than the single genic control.
Identification of animals has been made with an ear tag with dummy code, and blood typing has been used for paternity and individual identification in live animals. As various genetic markers are for different cattle breeds vary, the discrete genetic markers are necessary to identify Hanwoo. A total of 740 progeny testing Hanwoo were used to identify Hanwoo specific markers. To examine traceability of individuals by using breed specific genetic codes, four animal were randomly sampled, and traced from live animals to post-slaughter processing stages. The candidate genetic makers used in the study were 16 DNA microsatellites which were identified in romosomes 1 and 14. The number of alleles of those DNA microsatellites ranged from a minimum of 3 to maximum of 12. The heterozygote frequency ranged from 0.022 to 0.824. Effective number of alleles for each DNA microsatellites were 3 to 6. Six selected candidate genetic markers were able ti trace individual cattle with an 100% confidence level.
We have sequenced a portion of mitochondrial CO! gene (403 bp) of the firefly, Pyrocoelia rufa, to investigate genetic diversity within population, geographic variation, and phylogenetic relationships among haplotypes. A total of seven mtDNA haplotypes ranging in sequence divergence from 0.2% to 1.2% were obtained from 26 fireflies collected at four localities in Korea: Namhae, Pusan, Muju, and Yongin. The samples collected at the urban area, Pusan, were all fixed with one haplotype, differently those collected at the forest and/or agricultural areas. This appears to suggest that habitat fragmentation and population bottleneck caused by urbanization might have been severe in Pusan. On the other hand, from Muju known as the largest habitat and sanctuary for the firefly, four haplotypes with the maximum sequence divergence of 1.0% were obtained, and this estimate was the highest among the areas studied. The fireflies collected at the isolated islet, Namhae, revealed relatively low haplotype diversity(H=0.25), but one haplotype (PR7) was phylogenetically differentiated from others. This phenomenon was explained in terms of biogeographic history of the island and gene flow in the recent past. Grouping of Muju- Y ongin and Pusan-Namhae, respectively, in the hierarchical genetic analysis suggests the presence of historically occurred, biogeographic barrier against gene flow between them.
