Acculturation Strategies and Media Contents (재미한인의 문화변용전략과 미디어 콘텐츠)

  • The study examined acculturation patterns of Korean-Americans living in Portland, USA and their relationship to the consumption of media contents. Under the academic guidance of Berry's acculturation model, the four strategies of acculturation model were extensively inquired that immigrants and sojourner would adopt in host culture: Integration, Assimilation, Separation and Marginalization. Furthermore, how differently the four acculturation modes are related to media contents was examined. For this study, the survey questionnaires were administered among Korean Americans in Portland, USA. The total 371 data were collected and analyzed. The result indicated that 1) they preferred integration(M=4.57) and separation modes(M=4.49) over assimilation (M=2.92); 2) as separation tendency increased, the preference of Korean contents over American contents increased while as assimilation tendency increased, the preference of American contents over Korean contents; 3) high assimilation persons consumed more news than entertainments in American media contents. Compared to it, high separation persons used more entertainments than news in American media contents and more news than entertainments in Korean media contents.

Investigation on the Content Development and Promotional Strategy to Vitalize the Korean Science Channel (국내 과학전문채널 활성화를 위한 콘텐츠 개발 및 홍보전략 연구)

  • This paper is based on the perspective that the YTN Science, a science channel in Korea which plays a key role in the popularization of science, is suffering from low viewing ratings, insufficient content, and shortage of production. First, this study employs an exploratory method to identify current status of programming and operation of the Korean science channel along with its promotional strategy. Second, it aims to conduct an analysis on the science channels, specifically some major programs, of other nations including the U.S. (Discovery Channel, National Geographic Channel), United Kingdom (BBC Knowledge), Japan (Science Channel), and China (CCTV 10), seeking the possibility to apply and combine them afterward to the Korean TV channels specialized in science. A number of implications are derived from our diagnosis of present situation and analysis of abroad cases, and this helps us suggest the content development and promotional strategies as follows: First, due to the rising need for change in the programming strategy to enhance the value of the content, it is required to rearrange the programming in terms of the target audience and the viewer lifestyle, adopt a new strategy for building up the viewers' watching habit through 'stripping', and place strategic programs in prime-time. Second, as for the specific schemes of content production and application, it is recommended to establish a dual strategy in creating the content (one for conveying knowledge, the other for delivering fun), plan and use a representative character of the program, select scientific and technological topics with more Korean backgrounds, attempt strategic ties with SNS, deepen and diversify the material for programs, and implement a strategy to boost the OSMU. Finally, with regard to the promotional strategy, a constructive proposal may include raising channel awareness through science-related events and live broadcasting, performing promotional strategies by way of expanding to printed media like magazine and book publications, and intensifying online and mobile promotional strategy.

Development of Korean Version of the Dementia Eating Evaluation Tool based on Behavioral Observation (행동관찰 기반 치매 식이 평가 도구의 한국판 개발)

  • Objective : This study introduces domestic and overseas systematic assessment tools that can identify eating problems of dementia patients based on abnormal behavior observations and turns them into Korean through the verification of content placement by expert groups. Methods : Three types of assessment tools were selected for final development in Korean version through several meetings based on a wide range of relevant literature searches. The 3 selected assessment tools were first translated by the researchers, and a 9-person expert team was used to verify the Content Validity Index. Results : The EBS content equivalence calculation shows that all 6 questions and 1 response item had a CVI value 0.9, and all items were included in Korean EBS without modification. The EdFED content equivalence calculation showed that all 11 questions had CVI value 0.9, which was included in the Korean edition of EdFED without modification. The content equivalence calculation of the FDI showed that all 19 questions had a CVI of 0.8 or higher, and all items were included in the Korean version of the FDI without modification of the item. Conclusion : Korean versions of the EBS, EdFED and FDI, which are based on behavioral observation and diet tools for people with dementia, have been developed. Early determination of problems related to diet in dementia patients and providing proper intervention through observational Korean version assessment tools is vital in terms of strengthening patient nutrition and reducing caregivers' burden.

  • 항공기의 플러터 현상을 예방키 위한 개발시의 주요 공학적 임무로는 플러 터 해석, 풍동 플러터 시험, 실기체에 대한 지상진동시험 및 비행 플러터 시 험이 있다. 이들 업무는 군용 항공기의 경우에는 군사 규격서, 민간 항공기 의 경우는 FAR 규정 등에 항공기 개발 및 개조시에는 필히 수행토록 명시 되어 있으며, 특히 개발항공기의 인증을 받기 위해서는 초도 비행전까지 필 수적으로 완료되어야 하는 업무이다. 이중 항공기 지상진동시험은 개발항공 기의 초도 비행전에 실기체를 대상으로 하는 구조 동특성 규명시험으로써 플러터 해석 모델의 정확도를 입증하고 그 해석모델을 수정하거나 개선시키 는데 필요한 구조의 동특성 변수들을 실험적으로 규명하는 시험이다. 이 시 험은 개발된 항공기의 초도비행허가를 획득하고 비행속도제한을 설정키 위 해서 초도비행 직전에 초도 개발 비행기를 대상으로 필수적으로 수행되어야 하는 필수적 시험이다. 이에 따라 개발된 항공기의 전기체 지상진동시험을 수행하였고, 시험데이터의 모달해석을 하였다. 이 시험을 수행하기 위해 3개 의 가진기를 사용하였고, 모두 159개의 지점에서 주파수응답 함수를 얻었다. 최대 48 채널의 데이터 획득시스템을 사용하였으므로, 네번에 걸쳐 측정위치 를 옮겨 전체데이타를 획득하였다. 지상진동 시험의 최종해석 결과는 유한요 소 모델의 유효성을 검토하는데 사용되었고, 시험 데이타를 이용한 가진응답 해석(Forced Response Analysis)을 통하여 비행플러터 시험시에 사용되는 플러터 가진기의 위치선정 및 가진력의 크기를 결정하는데 이용하였다.ncy)가 저주 파수대로 천이(Lower Shift)하는 현상이 나타났으며, 일정한 작업량이라도 작업중량을 줄이고 작업 빈도를 높여서 작업할 경우에 이러한 현상이 더욱 두드러졌다. 작업시간의 경과에 따른 MVIS의 감소 현상은 작업빈도가 높고 비대칭형 작업일 때 가장 크게 나타났다. 총손실을 줄이고, 상대적 비용절감효과를 갖게할 수 있다고 하였다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 성인 여성기성복의 치수적합성을 높이기위하여 출산 후 중년에 접어 들면서 체형이 변화되는 것을 고려하여 연령을 분류하고(18세-34세, 30세-51세), 각 연령 집단에 따른 체형을 각각 3가지로 분류하였다. 이에 따라 의복 생산시의 총손실을 줄이기위한 상의, 하의생산시 필요한 부위별 최적규격치 간격을 제시하였다.적인 기능으로 보여지는 것에 좁혀서 작업능력의 연령증가 변화에 대하여다원적 평가를 하는 것이 실제적이라고 할 수 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 인간이 가지고 있는 다수의 기능중에서 수지교 치성과 연령증가와의 관계를 조사한다. 만약 연령증가 만으로 수지교치성을 평가 할 수 없는 경우에는 어떠한 요인이 수지기민성의 변화에 영향을 미치는가를 검토한다.t list)에서 자동적으로 사건들의 순서가 결정되도록 확장하였으며, 설비 제어방식에 있어서도 FIFO, LIFO, 우선 순위 방식등을 선택할 수 있도록 확장하였다. An Analysis of Understanding Aspects Required by Teachers and Perceived by Students in the 'Reproduction and Genesis' unit (생식과 발생 단원에서 교사가 요구하는 이해와 학생이 인식하는 이해 측면 분석)

  • The ultimate goal of instruction is for learners to understand contents they have to learn in class. Therefore, shedding light is needed on the characteristics of understanding required by teachers and perceived by students when class is conducted for the purpose of understanding. To do this, 87 middle school teachers were requested to write down questions they asked to improve the understanding of learners in 'reproduction and genesis' unit. They were categorized according to Wiggins & McTighe's six aspects of understanding and a questionnaire was developed based on the data. A survey was conducted on 90 teachers and 370 ninth-grade students. The findings of this study were as follows: First, the teachers demanded explaining, interpreting and perspective a lot, but applying, empathy and self-knowledge were scarcely required. Second, the teachers demanded explaining the most, and the students as well. The next aspect of understanding in both groups was interpreting, followed by perspective, applying, empathy and self-knowledge. There were significant differences among the opinions of the students according to gender (p<0.05). Third, the students persevered explaining, applying and self-knowledge the same way as the teachers demanded, but not for interpreting, perspective and empathy. This study is expected to provide some information to achieve the instruction objectives of understanding successfully.

Differences Between Franchisees and Independent Business Owners - Empirical Evidences and Policy Implications - (가맹점사업자는 자영업자와 어떻게 다른가 - 경험적 증거와 정책적 시사점 -)

  • This study compares the business performances and the socioeconomic and sociopsychological characteristics of franchisees and independent business owners (IBOs). On the basis of extant theoretical arguments and empirical evidences it was expected that franchisees are different from IBOs in these aspects because unlike IBOs they are using franchising as their way of businesses and should satisfy the requirements imposed by franchisors. Analyzed in the current study was a national survey database of 424 franchisees and 5,690 IBOs compiled by the Small Enterprise Development Agency in 2011. As expected, it was found that franchisees were significantly different from IBOs in such traits as financial and managerial capabilities, business experiences, demographic and socio-psychological characteristics, information searching efforts, business performances, and their perceptions of business obstacles. It was also found that the effects of these traits on business performances were quite different between franchisees and IBOs. The findings of the current study provide some meaningful suggestions for government agencies. Given that franchises and IBOs have different traits, their demands for governmental policy should be different, and consequently, it might be argued that government agencies should treat the two groups separately and should increase their efforts to develop appropriate supporting policies for each group. With respect to franchisor's practices for franchisee selection, it is also argued that in order to enhance franchisee performances franchisors need to examine thoroughly the traits of prospect franchisees. This study concludes with discussion of several theoretical and methodological limitations for future research.

  • This study is related to determination of the intention to watch a movie, which is affected by various emotional, environmental, and behavioral factors. In case of personal factors, personal taste formed on the basis of previously experienced movie related information affects selection of movies, while environmental factors are affected mostly by residental community experience, cognitive attitude, subjective norms, as well as the view of values. In this study, the determinants on decision to watch movie have been analyzed applying the theory of planned behavior. Taking into consideration that the determination, based on either personal factors or environmental factors, of consuming movie products stars from reasonable information collecting and that movie poster has been the primary source of information on movie products since the inception of the movie industry, this study analyzed tastes of movie watchers and many variables of movie poster format on determination of intention to watch movie. The results from this empirical study indicate that movie poster is effective means of low cost marketing inducing movie watching in terms of consuming minimum time and space with high speed of delivery while satisfying primary interest on the movie product. It is suggested movie posters should be prepared to make appeal to each generation of target consumers and be put on the market as a product of artistic work.

  • Publication Industry of scientific technology is showing tendency of decreasing in sales, which clearly draws down curve since 2000. The printing culture is declining whether it is because of trend avoiding pure science or technological science and engineering, advancement of mass media or increasing frequency of using internet. Nevertheless, researcher considered car industry in publication industry as a life-long purpose for study. For this reason, the researcher tried to find the variables of the marketing which give impact on the customers such as student group and consumer who buys cars, when buying professional books. The found variables are expected to have a huge impact on the publication industry of professional books. As a result of research, in the area of the vision and motive, most said that they have "chosen a major in car because they liked car in usual base." In the stage of recognizing the problem, they buy the books when it is inevitably necessary. In the stage of searching for the information, they get information from advertisements, friends, professors, internet or sales clerk in book stores. In the stage of evaluation, they look for the title and the publication date of the books. In addition, in the stage of deciding purchase, "buy immediately" was the most frequent answer while impulsive purchase is the least frequent answer. In the stage of evaluating after purchase, many of them mostly are satisfied with their purchase.

Factors influencing metabolic syndrome perception and exercising behaviors in Korean adults: Data mining approach (대사증후군의 인지와 신체활동 실천에 영향을 미치는 요인: 데이터 마이닝 접근)

  • This study was conducted to determine which factors would predict metabolic syndrome (MetS) perception and exercise by applying a machine learning classifier, or Extreme Gradient Boosting algorithm (XGBoost) from July 2014 to December 2015. Data were obtained from the Korean Community Health Survey (KCHS), representing different community-dwelling Korean adults 19 years and older, from 2009 to 2013. The dataset includes 370,430 adults. Outcomes were categorized as follows based on the perception of MetS and physical activity (PA): Stage 1 (no perception, no PA), Stage 2 (perception, no PA), and Stage 3 (perception, PA). Features common to all questionnaires for the last 5 years were selected for modeling. Overall, there were 161 features, categorical except for age and the visual analogue scale (EQ-VAS). We used the Extreme Boosting algorithm in R programming for a model to predict factors and achieved prediction accuracy in 0.735 submissions. The top 10 predictive factors in Stage 3 were: age, education level, attempt to control weight, EQ mobility, nutrition label checks, private health insurance, EQ-5D usual activities, anti-smoking advertising, EQ-VAS, education in health centers for diabetes, and dental care. In conclusion, the results showed that XGBoost can be used to identify factors influencing disease prevention and management using healthcare bigdata.

Siamese Cats - Analysis of Six Thai Independent Animators

  • As an animation educator at Mahidol University International College, Bangkok, for eight years I have been in a privileged position to be educating a small section of a new generation of Thai animators. Thailand has had little animation experimentation of their own and pre-internet had limited access to such diversity so I have attempted to bring some of the wealth of animation history, in particular British and European, as this is my background, into the classroom. In particular my teaching aim has been to introduce various possibilities to the choices of medium, styles and textual narratives that early (and current) experimental and independent animators have explored. Since the release of the first commercial feature film, Khun Kluay 2006, the Thai animation industry has gone through various highs and lows in the commercial sector, building a skilled workforce, many of whom trained and worked abroad then returned. Now there is strong evidence of an independent animation starting to emerge. In a continuation to my research on Thai Animation this paper will analyze selected independent works in more detail, exploring the themes, style and technology used. Whilst also acknowledging the possible mis- interpretation as that this is coming from the perspective of an outsider whose cultural language and interpretation may transcend the creators' given experiences and add alternative interpretation. The aim will be to contextualize the content, ideas and cultural perspective and bring more Thai works into the gaze of animation studies academics
