A Study on Damage Effects Assessment for Asphyxiation Accident due to Malfunction of Gas Type Fire Extinguishing System (가스계 소화설비 오작동으로 인한 질식사고의 피해영향 평가)

  • Gas system fire extinguishing equipment is a very economically useful facility, but if it is not used for a long period of time after installing the equipment, there is possibility of rupture due to corrosion of containers and operation errors of equipment systems, and this is very dangerous. However, it is impossible to experiment to check whether the equipment is operating normally. If gas is temporarily released into the enclosed space due to rupture and malfunction, it can cause serious human damage due to gas suffocation. In this study, based on the suffocation death accident of gas system fire extinguishing facility, the inflow path of released gas and the possibility of death and time to death were estimated using a 3D scan and FLACS.

  • The offshore installations and ships are the structures most likely to be exposed to hazards such as hydrocarbon fire and/or explosion. Developing proactive measures to prevent the escalation of such events thus requires detailed knowledge of the related phenomena and their consequences. $CO_2$ extinguishing systems are extensively used for fire accidents of on-and offshore installations because of outstanding performance and low cost. There is, however, the risk of carbon dioxide system which enumerates many of the fatalities by suffocation associated with industrial fire protection requirements. Therefore, the aim of this study is to perform the prediction of fire suppression characteristics of the carbon dioxide system in realistic enclosed compartment area of ships and propose $CO_2$ extinguish fire fighting system for preventing suffocation accidents during fire fighting. According to CFD calculations, it can be observed and assessed that various fire profiles with $CO_2$ and $O_2$ mole fraction in the target enclosed compartment area are applicable within the proposed system. Additionally, the design of fire safety system of ships and offshore installations can utilize ventilation system and/or layout arrangement through the proposed system.

  • 본 논문은 유아 질식사 사고를 예방하고 유아의 안전을 증진하기 위해 인공 지능(AI)을 활용한 아기 모빌의 개발과 적용에 관한 연구를 제시한다. 유아 뒤집기로 인한 사고는 아기의 안전에 심각한 위험을 초래하며, 이러한 사고를 예방하기 위한 새로운 접근 방식으로 AI 기술을 도입하는 것을 목표로 하였다. 본 연구에서는 AI 기술을 이용한 아기 모빌의 설계, 개발, 및 효과적인 적용 방안을 논의하며, 이를 통해 유아의 안전을 강화하고 부모들에게 편의성을 제공하는 방안을 제안했다.

  • Carbon dioxide extinguishing systems are broadly used for onshore and offshore fire accidents because of excellent performance and low cost. However, there is risk with carbon dioxide systems, which have caused many injuries and deaths by suffocation associated with industrial and marine fire protection applications. In this study, a numerical analysis was performed to predict the fire suppression characteristics of a carbon dioxide system in the compressor room of ships. A double protection safety system is suggested to prevent suffocation accidents from carbon dioxide extinguishing systems. Four scenarios were selected to study the variation of the heat release rate, maximum temperature, a $CO_2$ and $O_2$ mole fraction, and fire suppression characteristics with the carbon dioxide system. The importance of proper design is suggested for a ventilation system in the compressor room of ships.

  • 주로 여름철에 발생하는 익사사고는 강에서 멱을 감는 소년층에서 가장 많다. 대부분은 안전수칙을 잘 지키지 않거나 수영미숙 등으로 사고가 많이 일어나며 또한 수심이 갑자기 깊어지는 경우에 일어나기도 한다. 그 외에도 수영장이나 바다에서도 익사가 발생하고 있다. 익사사고는 기도에 물이 들어가는 질식사가 주원인이나, 실제로 기도나 폐에 물의 양이 많지 않은 경우가 대부분이며 때로는 기도에 물이 전혀 없는 후두경련으로 인한 기도폐쇄 즉 건성익사도 있다. 사고 시 소생술 시작이 늦으면 늦을수록, 소생술자의 경험이 미숙할수록 치사율은 높으며 나이가 어릴수록 소생 후에도 더 위험하다.

  • Currently, most of the industrial areas like chemistry, manufacturing, shipbuilding, and steel, perform the work related to gas, and the staffs who are in charge of this work have a risk of suffocation without cognizing incidents like gas leak. For example, when the nitrogen gas leaked in 2015 at Paju, two people were killed and four people were injured. In 2018 at Pohang, four workers were suffocated to death from nitrogen gas. In order to solve this problem, this study realized the system in which workers could immediately cognize the gas leak and also deliver the situation to the staff in charge of safety at the same time, by installing the IoT device composed of gas sensor and communication module on the safety helmet that should be worn by field workers. This study is expected to be able to reduce the casualties caused by gas leak in industrial sites.
