Early emergence of watermelon seeds was markedly enhanced by SMP treatment though the final emergence percentage was not significantly influenced. Mixing ratios of 10:1:5 and 10:1:6 (seed : Micro-Cel E : water by weight) were found to be most effective in promoting the early emergence of watermelon seeds primed for 72 hrs at $25^{\circ}C$. Even though the hypocotyl elongation was slightly promoted by SMP treatment, the hypocotyl diameter remained uninfluenced. Among the cultivars tested, 'House-Ilpum' and 'Surowang' showed the best response to the SMP treatment.
The Sericite Powder W3S Comminuted in 1 M $KNO_3$solution for 0.5, 1, 2, 5 and 10 h, compared with the addition of distilled water. It has been found that the mean diameter of the ground particles decreases until the comminuting for 1 h, however, increases after 1 h due to the agglomeration between fine particles. The sericite powder comminuted with 1 M $KNO_3$solution for 1 h shows the mean particle size of $1.9\mu$m, and it also shows the mean particle size of 2.4 $\mu$m in case of comminution in distilled water for 1 h.
This study was conducted to determine the physiological differences betweenhealthy and wilted plants with respect to nitrate assimilation and ascorbic acid content. Wilting was artificially induced in spinach plants by treating the seeds with nutrient solution containing high nitrogen and low potassium. The plants were cultured in different plots 4 types of media: 1N-1P-1K (control), 6N-1P-0K (0K), 6N-1P-0.5K (0.5K), and 6N-1P-2K (2K). The rate of wilting among the plants was as follows: control, 0%; 2K, 10%; 0.5K, 40%; and 0K, 70%. This shows that under high nitrogen conditions, the lower the amount of potassium provided, higher was the rate of wilting. There were no differences in plant growth among the plants treated with different levels of potassium under high nitrogen conditions. The nitrate content in both the leaves and the roots was higher in plants grown under high nitrogen media than those in the control. Furthermore, the nitrate level decreased with increasing potassium concentration. The ascorbic acid content of spinach under high nitrogen conditions was lower than those of the control.

This research presents the new method to fabricate small features through applying chemical mechanical micro machining(C3M) for Al5052 and single crystal silicon. To improve machinability of ductile and brittle material, reacted layer was formed on the surface before micro-drilling process by chemical reaction with $HNO_3$(10wt%) and KOH(10wt%). And then workpieces were machined to compare conventional micro-drilling process with newly suggested one. To evaluate whether or not the machinability was improved by the effect of chemical condition, surface defects such as burr, chipping and crack generation were measured. Finally, it is confirmed that C3M is one of the feasible tools for micro machining with the aid of effect of the chemical reaction.

Chitosan oligosaccharide with an average degree of polymerization 2-3 was prepared by degradation reaction using sodium nitrite, and the resulting aldehyde group was reduced to hydroxy group. N-palmitoyl, O-palmitoyl chitosan oligosaccha was obtained from the reaction between palmitoyl chloride and oligosaccharide under DMAP catalyst. Alkaline hydrolysis was carried out to remove the O-palmitoyl group. After dispersion and ultrasonication in aqueous solution, N-palmitoyl chitosan oligosaccharide gives vesicle structure. Its structure and size was analyzed by TEM.

This study was conducted to evaluate fertigation effects of pig slurry (PS) and chemical fertilizer (CF) in tomato by analyzing the growth and yield, nutrient content and uptake, nutrient use efficiency, and soil characteristics in greenhouse cultivation. The treatments compared were; no-fertilizer, two different levels of PS (26 mg $L^{-1}$ and 52 mg $L^{-1}$), and a control treatment of chemical fertilizer. There was no significant difference in growth and yield between PS and CF treatments. however, yield reduction was observed in PS 26 mg $L^{-1}$ treatment. The N-utilization efficiency in CF treatment was similar to that of PS 52 mg $L^{-1}$ treatment. Nutrient utilization efficiency decreased in order of potassium (K), nitrogen (N), phosphate (P) with 29.2~43.3% in K, 15.8~36.7% in N, and 3.0~6.3% in P. In soil chemical characteristics, soil pH in PS treatment was higher than in CF treatment. In contrast, nitrate content in soil was higher in CF treatment than in PS treatment. The content of exchangeable K in soil was higher in PS and CF 52 mg $L^{-1}$ treatments. There was no significant difference in exchangeable Ca and Mg among those treatments. Therefore, it can be concluded that chemical fertilizers can be substituted by PS based on soil chemical analysis in tomato fertigation culture.

This study was carried out to evaluate the applicability of the soil washing process to remediation mercury-contaminated mine tailing or solid material (soil and sediments etc.) around abandoned mines. First, the physicochemical characteristics of mine tailing were analyzed through particle size analysis and sequential extraction. Secondly, laboratory scale washing experiments were performed using hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, potassium iodide and sodium thiosulfate. As a results of particle size analysis, mine tailing particle were concentrated below 40 mesh and the particle size below 200 mesh was the most analyzed. As a result of sequential extraction, elemental mercury fraction was analyzed as the highest with 69.12%, with strongly bound fraction 15.25% and residual and HgS fractions 11.97%, respectively. Laboratory scale washing experiments showed low applicability for nitric acid and sodium thiosulfate solutions. In case of hydrochloric acid solution, it was analyzed that mercury removal was possible at particle size of 200 mesh or more. Therefore, it is considered to be performed together with the physical sorting process. Potassium iodide solution was analyzed to have high washing efficiency at all concentrations and particle sizes. In particular, the mercury removal efficiency is high in the micro particles, and thus the applicability of the washing technology is the highest.

Simultaneous denitrification and methanogenesis at various influent COD/Nitrate-N(below C/N) ratio was investigated with two different anaerobic sludges of which one was inoculated with glucose only and the other was inoculated with glucose and nitrate. Three different C/N ratios of 30, 20, and 10 were applied with each anaerobic sludge in serum bottles agitated in a rotary shaker to monitor the time related changes of amount of gas production and gas composition. Glucose was used as a single carbon source, which was adjusted to 1,000 mg/L as COD and potassium nitrate was used as a nitrogen source to adjust the each C/N ratio. COD removal by methanogenesis was dominant at higher C/N ratios, while COD removal by denitrification was dominant at lower C/N ratios. With the sludges cultured at C/N ratios below 10, SMA and SDNR rising different carbon substrates were investigated. The most efficient carbon substrate was acetate and the highest SMA and SDNR were 0.76 g COD/g VSS day with pure anaerobic sludge and 1.38 g ${NO_3}^--N/g$ VSS day with sludge cultured at C/N ratio of 5, respectively.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of germanium (Ge) application types on the nutrient concentrations in soil and leaves and leaf characteristics in a 'Niitaka' pear orchard in 2004. Ge application included foliar application, fertigation in soils, trunk injection, and the three-combined application. All Ge treatedplots had lower soil $NO_3$-N, K, and Ca concentrations than those of control plot. Ge concentrations in Ge treated-soils were approximately 50 times higher than those of the control. Ge applications significantly increased area, dry weight, and specific weight in leaves compared to the control. Control treated-trees had greater K concentrations in leaves than the Ge treated-trees, which was oppositively observed for the leaf Ca; leaf Ca was higher on the Ge treated-trees than control. Leaf Ge concentrations were significantly higher on the Ge treated-trees compared to the control, except for the Ge fertigation. Ge concentrations in fruits were greater on the Ge-treated trees than the control trees.

Rose is one of the major cut-flower crops in Korea. A survey was conducted to investigate the chemical properties of soils cultivating rose under plastic film house at 72 farms in Korea. Soil texture distribution of the samples were loam(43%), silty clay loam(19%), and clay loam(17%). The average chemical properties of the surface soils were pH 5.85, electrical conductivity $3.61dS\;m^{-1}$, organic matter $37g\;kg^{-1}$, nitrate nitrogen $205mg\;kg^{-1}$, phosphorous as Av. $P_2O_5$$844mg\;kg^{-1}$, and exchangeable potassium $1.41cmol_c\;kg^{-1}$. Available phosphate and exchangeable potassium were accumulated at the level higher than the optimum content in over 70% of the surveyed farms. The flower stalk length was positively correlated with the organic matter content in soil, but was negatively correlated with the electrical conductivity in Red Sandra cultivar.
