  • Increasing flexibility and lightness of recently built high-rise buildings make the structures susceptible to loads such as earthquakes and winds. Therefore, higher performance vibration control systems to reduce the vibration levels are demanded more than any time in the past. One of the typical active vibration control systems is the active mass driver (AMD). In this paper, an active vibration control system consisting of small shaking table, building model, sensors, signal processing board and AMD is constructed. The dynamic characteristics of these individual systems are investigated through the experimental study. The performance of the active vibration control system is verified through the El Centro earthquake(1940,NS) on the building model.

  • Wind tunnel test results and their interpretations, which were performed to study the aerodynamic stability of tower of self-anchored suspension bridge, are presented in this paper. Tower and full models were tested under smooth and turbulent flow conditions. In the case of the tower with inclined two columns, the vibration due to wakes were occurred at wide velocity zone because the wakes with various frequencies were generated by inclined upstream column. It has to be emphasized that the vibration characteristics of the tower in the self-anchored suspension bridge may be very sensitive to the longitudinal boundary conditions of the girder at the supports. Because of the two natural frequency of the tower, out-of-plane bending and torsional, were not well separated, coupled motions were observed in a wide range of wind velocity. The effectiveness of corner cut, countermeasure to reduce the tower vibrations, was also studied. It has been found that 1:10, comer cut size to column width, may be the most effective ratio for reducing the vibrations.

  • In the seismic design of structures, seismic forces are calculated based on structural models and analysis. In order to accurately address the dynamic characteristics of the actual structure in the structural model, calibration based on actual measurements is required. In this study, a 4-story frame test specimen was manufactured to simulate frame building, accelerometers were attached at each floor, and 1-axis shaking table test was performed. The natural period of the specimen was similar to that of the actual 4 story frame building, and the columns were designed to behave with double-curvature having the infinite stiffness of the horizontal members. To investigate the effects seismic waves characteristics, historical and artificial excitations with various frequencies and acceleration magnitudes were applied. The natural frequencies, damping ratios, and mode shapes were obtained using frequency response functions obtained from dynamic response signals, and the mode vector deviations according to the input seismic waves were verified using the Mode assurance criterion (MAC). In addition, the damping ratios obtained from the vibration tests were applied to the structural model, and the method with refined dynamic characteristics was validated by comparing the analysis results with the experimental data.

  • This study introduces the design of a bi-directional damper using a tuned mass damper(TMD) and a tuned liquid column damper(TLCD) and presents experimental verifications to confirm its control performance. The damper used in this study behaves as a TMD in a specific translational direction and acts as a TLCD in the other orthogonal direction. First, shaking table test is performed to investigate the coupled effect of control forces produced by TMD and TLCD. Then, the parameters that affect to dynamic characteristics of the proposed damper are quantitatively evaluated based on the experimental results. Testing results shows that the damper used in this study produces control forces coupled by TLCD and TMD, as it is excited by waves with an incident angle. Also, it is observed that the damper can be used to reduce bi-directional responses of building structures.

  • In this study, a series of 1 g shaking table tests were carried out for a single pile in soft clay with various input acceleration amplitudes and frequencies. Based on the results, dynamic p-y curves were drawn and, in turn, the dynamic p-y backbone curve was formed by connecting the peak points, corresponding to the maximum soil resistance, of the dynamic p-y curves. In order to represent the p-y backbone curve numerically, Matlock's p-y formulations for clay was used to find the initial stiffness ($k_{ini}$) and the ultimate capacity ($p_u$) of the clay, both of which are required to formulate the p-y backbone curve as a hyperbolic function. The suggested p-y backbone curve was verified through comparisons with currently available p-y curves as well as other researchers' centrifuge test results and numerical analysis results.

  • As recently, there have been two earthquakes with a magnitude of 5.0 or greater in Korea and the number of smaller earthquakes has increased, a lot of research and interest in earthquake-resistant design are increasing. Especially, the Pohang earthquake has also raised interest in earthquake-resistant design of port facilities. In this study, experiments and analysis were conducted on the dynamic behavior of upright and inclined breakwaters during earthquakes among port structures through the 1g shaking table test. To this end, three seismic waves were applied to the model to which the similarity law (scale effect) was applied: long period (Hachinohe), short period (Ofunato) and artificial seismic waves. The acceleration and displacement of the upright and inclined breakwaters were analyzed according to whether the DCM method was reinforced during earthquakes based on the results of shaking table test. As the result, the dynamic behavior of the upright and inclined breakwater shows a tendency to suppress the amplification of acceleration as bearing capacity and rigidity increase when DCM method is reinforced.

  • In this research, shaking table tests for three types of gravity quay wall system were performed to analyze the influence of excess pore pressure in backfill soils on the natural frequency of gravity quay wall systems. The elastic modulus of backfill soils was also estimated from the back analyses using the results of the shaking table tests. From the test results, it was observed that as the magnitude of excess pore pressures increased, the natural frequency of the gravity quay wall system decreased and vice versa. The natural frequency was about 44Hz when no excess pore pressure was generated in backfill soils, and decreased to about 16Hz at the pore pressure ratio of 0.55. The elastic modulus of backfill soils reached the constant maximum value when the pore pressure ratio was less than 0.2, and abruptly decreased as the pore pressure ratio became larger than that. The elastic modulus of backfill soils decreased to $10\%$ of the maximum value when the pore pressure ratio was 0.55.

  • This study develops 2-D analysis method of a base-isolated pool structure, and verifies the method through shaking table test using a scaled model. A wall of the pool structure is modeled as lumped mass, and added mass of the fluid is imposed on the nodes of the structure to consider the hydrodynamic effect of contained fluid. The equation of motion of base-isolated pool structure is obtained by coupling of two equations for superstructure composed of wall and fluid, and for bottom slab and isolator. The scaled model for shaking table test is made with transparent acryle, and 4-high damping laminated rubber bearings are used. The responses of the scaled model by the test are generally good agreement with those by the analysis. It is shown that 2-D analysis method gives somewhat conservative results.
