As the geometrical characteristic of the curved bridge, the seismic response of curved bridges are different from straight bridges. This study analyzed the seismic response of the curved bridges considering diverse factors such as radius of curvature, direction of seismic load and support condition. The improved simple modeling of the curved bridge for seismic analysis is proposed, and it is compared with the detail modeling in order to verify the simple modeling. Three simply supported curved bridges and six 3-span continuous bridges are selected for seismic analysis. The behavior of curved bridges are evaluated in terms of the displacement and the force at supports and piers under seismic load applied in various directions. The results of this study show that upward reaction force may appear in simply supported curved bridge under seismic load. And continuous curved bridges are affected by the direction of the seismic load.

The capacity spectrum method (CSM), which is known to be an approximate technique for assessing the seismic capacity of an existing structure, was originally proposed for simple building structures that could be modeled as single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) systems. More recently, however, CSM has increasingly been adopted for assessing most bridge structures, as it has many practical advantages. Some studies on this topic are now being performed, and a few results of these have been presented as ground-breaking research. However, studies have until now been limited to symmetrical straight bridges only. This study evaluates the practical applicability of CSM to the evaluation of irregular curved bridges. For this purpose, the seismic capacities of 3-span prestressed concrete bridges with different subtended angles subjected to some recorded earthquakes are compared with a more refined approach based on nonlinear time history analysis. The results of the study show that when used for curved bridges, CSM induces higher inelastic displacement responses than the actual values, and that the gap between the two becomes larger as the subtended angle increases.

The grid structure is parallel main girders intersected with crossgirder. It distribute the loads to adjoining main girder through the crossgirder when a girder is subjected to a load. grillage girder bridge has high load-carrying capacity, it can save materials and become more economical type of bridge. In this paper, the grillage girder bridge analysis program developed by using the transfer matrix method deals with following problems: the comparision with Leonhardt, Szabo, FEM yang and jung in the analysis of grillage girder bridges, quality of straight and curved bridges with skew angle, forces of straight and curved bridges according to skew angle and bending stiffness/torsional stiffness ratio.

This study is performed to understand complex behavior and to investigate the rational analysis methods for seismic design of the curved bridges. To analyze the curved bridges for the seismic loadings, it is used that the finite element analysis program has the 7-dof curved beam and straight beam element. The free vibration characteristics of the curved bridges are compared with the straight bridges that have span length same as the average arc length of inside and outside girder of those. For the same case, the dynamic behavior is compared under seismic loadings. It is found that regular bridges classified by AASHTO are analyzed as if those were straight. To investigate the dynamic behavior of general curved bridges under seismic loading, the seismic loading directions and the subtended angle of curved bridges are varied.
The behavior of steel curved bridges is more complicated than straight bridges, thus the analysis, design and construction process of curved bridges require much more attention. In design of curved bridges, the grillage analysis using general structural analysis program or special program is mainly used. Comparative study in coherence between these analytical results and actual behavior of curved bridges has been rarely conducted. To study the behaviour of curved bridges and verify the current design method, field measurements and analyses using general structural analysis program and 3-D refined analysis program were carried out for simple and continuous bridges in this study. The study focused on the behavior of curved steel bridges during construction. Measured and analytical results had quantitative difference mutually, but there were qualitatively similar. Stress variations in transverse direction of flange were observed and grillage analysis models yielded more conservative values than 3-D refined analysis models.

This study has addressed to evaluate the effects of radius of curvature and skew angle on the negative reaction in a plate girder bridge with LRB (Lead Rubber Bearing) supports. As analytical parameters, various radius of curvatures and skew angles were selected and two seismic loads of El-Centro and artificial earthquakes were applied to the bridge in the longitudinal and transverse directions. As results of 3D analysis, the possibility of negative reaction is shown at the part of acute angle and inner side of the curved bridge, and becomes increased when seismic load is applied in the transverse direction. In addition, the occurrence of negative reaction is found to be increased as both radius of curvature and skew angle decrease, which means that curved bridge has higher possibility of negative reaction than straight one. Conclusively, all of earthquake wave, gradient, radius of curvature and skew angle should be considered together to investigate the possibility of negative reaction at the bridge support subject to seismic load.

Although a limited number of experimental investigations and finite element analyses revealed that a curved web panel in practical design has a considerable reserve strength after the elastic buckling as a straight girder web panel, the current Guide Specifications for Horizontally Curved Steel Girder Highway Bridges (AASHTO, 2003) do not consider the postbuckling strength in the ultimate shear strength due to lack of a comprehensive study. In this study, the ultimate shear strength behavior of horizontally curved steel web panels was investigated through nonlinear finite element analysis and experimental test. It was found that curved web panels used in practical designs are able to develop the postbuckling strength that is equivalent to that of straight girder web panels having the same dimensional and material properties.

The horizontally curved bridges have been used to connect bridges and roads. Until 1960s, they had been constructed with straight girders, called 'kinked girder bridges', which requires much cost and time-consuming construction of substructure. In case of using curved girders, practiced later, they would have many advantages such as reduction in the total construction cost and time, and ability to make aesthetic bridges. In designing plate girder bridges, it is necessary to determine the spacings between vertical stiffeners and the allowable shear stresses based on shear buckling capacity because it plays a key role in preventing the premature local shear buckling. Compared with the straight web, the critical shear buckling stresses of curved web panels vary with both aspect ratio and curvature coefficient. For designing curved web panels, a simplified formula and shear buckling coefficients were proposed by parametric models with F.E.M in this study.

The behaviors of the curved bridges which has been constructed in the RAMP or Interchange are very complicate and different than orthogonal bridges according to the variations of radius of curvature, skew angle and spacing of shoes. Occasionally, the camber of girder and negative reactions can be occurred due to bending and torsional moment. In this study, the effects on the negative reaction in the curved bridge were investigated on the basis of design variables such as radius of curvature, skew angle, and spacing of shoes. For this study, the twin-steel box girder curved bridge with single span which is applicable for the RAMP bridges with span length(L) of 50.0m and width of 9.0m was chosen and the structural analysis to calculate the reactions was conducted using 3-dimensional equivalent grillage system. The value of negative reaction in curved bridges depends on the plan structures of bridges, the formations of structural systems, and the boundary conditions of bearing, so, radius of curvature, skew angle, and spacing of shoes among of design variables were chosen as the parameter and the load combination according to the design standard were considered. According to the results of numerical analysis, the negative reaction in curved bridge increased with an decrease of radius of curvature, skew angle, and spacing of shoes, respectively. Also, in case of skew angle of $60^{\circ}$ the negative reaction has been always occurred without regard to ${\theta}/B$, and in case of skew angle of $75^{\circ}$ the negative reaction hasn't been occurred in ${\theta}/B$ below 0.27 with the radius of curvature of 180m and in ${\theta}/B$ below 0.32 with the radius of curvature of 250m, and in case of skew angle of $90^{\circ}$ the negative reaction hasn't been occurred in the radius of curvature over 180m and in ${\theta}/B$ below 0.38 with the radius of curvature of 130m, The results from this study indicated that occurrence of negative reaction was related to design variables such as radius of curvature, skew angle, and spacing of shoes, and the problems with the stability including negative reaction will be expected to be solved as taken into consideration of the proper combinations of design variables in design of curved bridge.
The behavior of horizontally curved I-girder bridges is complex because the flexural and torsional behavior of curved girders are coupled due to their initial curvature. Also, the behavior is affected by cross beams. To investigate the behavior of horizontally curved I-girder bridges, it is necessary to consider curved girders with cross beams. In order to perform free vibration analyses of horizontally curved I-girder bridges, a finite element formulation is presented here and a finite element analysis program is developed. The formulation that is presented here consists of curved and straight beam elements, including the warping degree of freedom. Based on the theory of thin-walled curved beams, the shape functions of the curved beam elements are derived from homogeneous solutions of the static equilibrium equations. Third-order hermits polynomials are used to form the shape functions of the straight beam elements. In the finite element analysis program, global stiffness and mass matrix are composed, based on the Cartesian coordinate system. The Gupta method is used to efficiently solve the eigenvalue problem. Comparing the results of several examples here with those of previous studies, the formulation presented is verified. The validity of the program developed is shown by comparing results with those analyzed by the shell element.
