Elastic Local Buckling of Orthotropic Open Section Compression Members with Asymmetric Edge Stiffeners (비대칭 연단보강재가 설치된 직교이방성 개방단면 압축재의 탄성국부좌굴)

  • This paper presents the results of an analytical investigation pertaining to the elastic local buckling behavior of asymmetric edge stiffened orthotropic open section structural member under uniform compression. The asymmetric edge stiffener is considered as a beam element neglecting its torsional rigidity. We suggested the analytical model of asymmetric edge stiffeners which is composed of a strip of flange plate, equal width of edge stiffener, and a plate attached at the flange end, and computed the moment of inertia of the stiffener about an axis through the centroid of the ensuing cross-section. Using the derived equation, the local buckling coefficients of asymmetrically edge stiffened orhtotropic I-section columns are predicted and the results are presented in a graphical form.

Study on the Orthogonal Stiffening Characteristics for the Natural Frequencies and Buckling Loads of the Composite Laminated Cylindrical Shells (복합재료원통셸의 고유진동수 및 좌국하중에 대한 직교보강 특성 연구)

  • The analytical solutions for the free vibration and buckling of cross -ply laminated composite cylindrical shell with the orthogonal stiffeners, i. e., axial stiffeners(stringers) and circumferential stiffeners(rings), are presented using the energy method. The stiffeners are assumed to be an integral part of the shell and have been directly included in analysis(it's called discrete stiffener theory). The effect of the parameters such as the stacking sequences, the shell thickness, the shell length-to-radius ratio are studied. By comparison with the previously published analytical results for the stiffened cylindrical shells, it is shown that natural frequencies can be determined with adequate accuracy.

  • In this study buckling behavior of orthotropic plate with a longitudinal stiffener under in-plane linearly distributed loads is investigated. All edges of plate are assumed to be simply supported and the stiffener is considered as a beam element. For the equation of buckling analysis Rayleigh-Ritz method is employed. The upper limit of the critical stress at various location of stiffener is determined by using Lagrangian multiplier method. Buckling analysis is performed for the various position of stiffener and for the various width ratios between plate and stiffener. The parametric study shows that, when four edges of plate are simply supported, the most effective position for a longitudinal stiffener is at the location of which the upper limit of the stress is the maximum.

  • Grillages are abundant in ship structures and in many other types of structures such as bridges and building floors. Clarkson has shown that plated grillages can be satisfactorily analyzed as gridworks if an appropriate effective breadth is taken into account. Also, it has previously been pointed out, by Nielsen, that grillage calculations could be simplified by use of the Laplace transformation. In this paper, it is assumed that the torsional rigidity of the members and axial load are negligible, also that girders have the same scantling and spacing each other and so stiffeners do. Then the grillages composed of both-end-fixed girders and both-end-hinged stiffeners, which are subjected only to uniform normal loads are investigated. The calculus of variation is used to set up the differential equations and the Laplace transformation is applied to solve the differential equations. The program has been tested by FACOM 28 and the results show good agreements with those by the STRESS, which was developed in M.I.T.. The amount of the data input and computing time are much less than those of the STRESS. But this program has so much restrictions that it is urgent to extend the program to the grillage problems of arbitrary loading and boundary conditions.

  • The composite frame system with reinforced concrete column and steel beam has some advantages in the structural efficiency by complementing the shortcomings between the two systems. The system, however has also a lot of problems in practical design and construction process due to the material dissimilarities. Considering these circumstances, this research is aimed at the development of the composite structural system which enables the steel beams to be connected to the R/C columns with higher structural safety and economy. Basically the proposed connection system is composed of four split tees, structural angles reinforced by stiffener, high strength steel rods, connecting plates and shear plates. The structural tests have been carried out to verify the moment transfer mechanism from beam flange to steel rods or connecting plates through the angle reinforced by siffener. The four prototype specimens have been tested until the flange of beam reached the plastic states. From the tests, no distinct material dissimilarities between concrete and steel have been detected and the stress transfer through wide flange beam - structural angle - high strength steel rod or connecting plate is very favorable.

Cyclic Seismic Performance of RBS Weak-Axis Welded Moment Connections (RBS 약축 용접모멘트접합부의 내진성능 평가)

  • In steel moment frames constructed of H-shapes, strong-axis moment connections should be used for maximum structural efficiency if possible. And most of cyclic seismic testing, domestic and international, has been conducted for strong-axis moment connections and cyclic test data for weak-axis connections is quite limited. However, when perpendicular moment frames meet, weak-axis moment connections are also needed at the intersecting locations. Especially, both strong- and weak-axis moment connections have been frequently used in domestic practice. In this study, cyclic seismic performance of RBS (reduced beam section) weak-axis welded moment connections was experimentally investigated. Test specimens, designed according to the procedure proposed by Gilton and Uang (2002), performed well and developed an excellent plastic rotation capacity of 0.03 rad or higher, although a simplified sizing procedure for attaching the beam web to the shear plate in the form of C-shaped fillet weld was used. The test results of this study showed that the sharp corner of C-shaped fillet weld tends to be the origin of crack propagation due to stress concentration there and needs to be trimmed for the better weld shape. Different from strong-axis moment connections, due to the presence of weld access hole, a kind of CJP butt joint is formed between the beam flange and the horizontal continuity plate in weak-axis moment connections. When weld access hole is large, this butt joint can experience cyclic local buckling and subsequent low cycle fatigue fracture as observed in this testing program. Thus the size of web access hole at the butt joint should be minimized if possible. The recommended seismic detailing such as stickout, trimming, and thicker continuity plate for construction tolerance should be followed for design and fabrication of weak-axis welded moment connections.
