  • KCI Committee 107 is "Underground Structures Research Committee". The Committee 107completed the first step study on the analysis and design for underground BOX type structures by 2005. In the study, the committee attempted to the standardization of the analysis and design procedure. This is the introduction and summary of the study and the prospective plan on this subject.

A study on the effect of ground vibration induced by vibrohammer and RCD on adjacent subway tunnel (바이브로 해머 및 RCD 공법 적용시 기존터널에 미치는 진동영향해석)

  • This paper presents the effect of ground vibration induced by vibrohammer and RCD on adjancent subway tunnel performance using FDM program. Firstly, the stability criteria for structures near vibration source were proposed according to existing data, then peak particle velocity around tunnel was estimated based on detailed information of vibrohammer and existing formula for dynamic loads through numerical analysis. The peak particle velocity induced by RCD bit rotation was also estimated using surveyed data and formula. Consequently, displacement and stress responses were obtained at crown, shoulder and spring line and compared with the criteria to check stability of tunnel.

  • Open-cut method has been widely used to construct underground structures, but it causes several problems such as traffic congestion and public resentment resulting from severe construction noise and ground settlement. In many cases, it is very difficult to build underground structures safely due to the unknown locations of buried facilities such as water pipes, drainage pipes, gas pipes and high-pressure cable conduits etc. Also in open-cut method, moving buried facilities causes additional cost and extension of construction period. Therefore, this paper is to present a case study in which Tubular Roof construction Method (T.R.c.M.), a newly developed construction method for underground structures using slab steel pipes and PC wall trench, is applied for the construction of a subway tunnel in Seoul. As a result, it is found that T.R.c.M. is a construction method by which tunnels can be constructed safely without any effect on the surrounding environment and traffic flow due to the minimized construction vibration and noise.

  • This paper is on a practical method for determination of the economical steel ratio in RC flexural members with an equal safety factor. The cost functions of each material and labor are considered to construct the cost function. Then, an equation for determination of the economical flexure steel ratio with the lowest construction cost were proposed. It was found that a relevant steel ratio is recommended to be 0.65~1.0% for designing singly reinforced rectangular beam.

  • Cracks in the underground structures are mainly observed due to internal ununiformity of thermal stresses or restraint of structural movement in associate with rapid temperature gradient. Especially, thermal cracks are known to occur easily in a massive structure, but possibility of these depend on the amount of cement applied and ratio of span to height of the structure even though the thickness is less than specification‘s. Thus, this study aims at how to control thermal cracks in a massive subway structure and figures out an optimized construction method and procedure. As results of parametric study for length, height and outer temperature for concrete placement, it is found that hydration heats were not affected by both length and height of concrete placement but thermal stresses were greatly dependent. Most effective ways of controling thermal cracks were to fit a proper ratio of length to height of concrete placement and to decrease temperature of concrete placement as much as possible.

  • The bigger of concrete strctures by a construct technique improvement, and the increase of the cement quantity which is caused by with use of the high-strength concrete for the load-carrying-capacity and a durability cause temperature cracks by a heat of hydration. The temperature crack due to the heat of hydration classified a nonstructural crack. but it has a bad effect on durability of concrete structures. especially, in case of a subway concrete box structure, when a water-proof facilities is beaked on an outer-wall, the water leakage occurs through a penetration crack generated from a wall of the concrete structure too. This paper, for the subway concrete box strucuture, the use of blended cement, the temperature of air and concrete, control joint, was considered and analysed by a three dimensional finite element method.

  • The subway concrete box structure can`t establish expansion joint because of animal power delivery of the subway rail. In this case, As increase of structure volume, it is subjected to cause temperature crack.   • This Paper presents dynamic analysis of underground R/C Subway Structure, subjected to seismic actions. Earthquakes brought serious damage to RC subway Structure. Foe studying the collapse mechanism of underground RC Subway, seismic of a subway station is simulated in using FEM program ASP2000 of two-dimension based on the path dependent RC elastic model, soil foundation and interfacial models. The shear failure of intermediate vertical columns is founds to be the major cause of the structural collapse. According to FEM simulation of the failure mechanism, it is considered that the RC column would lose axial load carrying capacity after the occurrence of the localized diagonal shear cracks , and sudden failure of the outer frame would be followed. Specially, the shear stress in the middle slab reaches maximum shear capacity. So, the Structure would fail in the middle slab as a result of erasing the vertical ground motion computation.

The Study on the Prediction and Measurement for the Behaviour of Structures and Weathered Soil & Rock in Excavating the Ventilation Shaft (지하철 개착구 굴착시 주변자반과 구조물에 대한 거동예측과 실측의비교평가)

  • This paper discusses contents of the existing design, the behaviours prediction on the strut and retaining wall around subsurfaces, and also evaluates the measured results in comparison with the management criterion during excavation period of ventilation shaft at Pusan-Subway 220. Field measurements showed that maximum displacement 23.74 mm at boundary site of multistratification and the weathered rock to be formed at 0.2~0.6 H of total excavating depth(H), 68 ton of maximum axial force and 4.4X102 kg/cm2 of stress on strut. The measured axial force exceeds prediction levels by up to 50 percent at the weathered soil & rock, and the others come under the category of their levels. The great gap of both field measurements and prediction on behaviour makes a difference of the site situation at the design stage and the practical working. This measured value is greatly safety in comparison with that of the safety criterion, but axial force at 4~5 strut of ventilation shaft l is higher than the prediction.

  • Damages and public complaints are increased due to construction noise and vibration from several sources. It is urgently needed to develop the easy and practical method to estimate the vibration effect. In this study, to predict the vibration effect, the method using the response spectrum with amplification factor concepts prroposed by Newmark and Hall is used. Also the applicability of the method is examined. Vibration measurement on subway structure, foundation and building structures are performed and the results show that the provided method is practical and can be used to predict the vibration effect.
