  • This study presents the effects of temporally varied groundwater table on hydrological components such as surface runoff, evapotranspiration, and soil water content. To this end, the SWAT-MODFLOW model in which the groundwater module of SWAT is replaced with MODFLOW model has been used with a modification to enhance the coupling between the water content in soil profile and the groundwater in shallow aquifer. The variable soil layer construction technique (VSLT) is developed in the present work to represent the direct interaction of soil water and groundwater more realistically, and then the VSLT is incorporated into SWAT-MODFLOW model. In VSLT, when the simulated groundwater table rises within the soil zone, the soil layers below the water table is regarded as a portion of the shallow aquifer, so that those layers are excluded from the initially defined soil zone and are governed by the MODFLOW. From the simulation tests for the Musim river basin, the improved SWAT-MODFLOW model with VSLT is found to correctly evaluate the spatial distributions of overland flow, soil moisture, evapotranspiration according to the groundwater table variation.

  • Groundwater pumping from a well has different impacts on streamflow depletion because hydraulic properties of the aquifer and the stream bed differ depending on its location. Therefore, quantitative assessment of streamflow depletion due to each groundwater pumping with different well locations is needed for the effective groundwater development and streamflow management. In this study, a watershed-based surface water and groundwater integrated model, SWAT-MODFLOW was used to assess the streamflow depletion near stream reach due to groundwater pumping from a well located within the Sinduncheon watershed. The arbitrary 50 wells among the currently used groundwater pumping wells were selected within the study area and the streamflow responses to each groundwater pumping were simulated at nearby and downstream reaches. In particular, the applicability of the Stream Depletion Factor (SDF) and Stream Bed Factor (SBF), which are widely used for evaluating the degree of streamflow depletion due to groundwater pumping, was evaluated. The simulated results demonstrated that the streamflow depletion rate divided by the pumping rate significantly differ depending on well locations and distance between well and stream, showing a wide range of values from below 20% to above 90%. From the simulated results, it was found out that the SDF or the SBF can be a partial referred value but not an absolute criterion in determining whether a pumping well has a great impact on streamflow depletion or not.

  • In this study, a watershed-based surface water and groundwater integrated model, SWAT-MODFLOW was used to quantify the stream flow depletion due to groundwater pumping for the Sinduncheon watershed. Complex water use conditions such as water taken from a stream, sewage disposal release, irrigation from agricultural reservoir, groundwater pumping were considered for simulations. In particular, the model was revised to reflect the effects of reservoir operation and return flow from the used groundwater on streamflow variation. The simulated results showed that the groundwater pumping at current status has induced the decrease of more than 10% in annual average streamflow and 40% in drought flow at the outlet of the Sinduncheon watershed, The simulated results also revealed that the vast water withdrawals at green house areas during winter season have dramatically changed streamflow from April to June. The streamflow depletion was mainly attributed to pumping wells located within the distance of 300 m from the stream for Sinduncheon watershed.

  • In the present study, an integrated SWAT-MODFLOW model was implemented to analyze the method of supplying groundwater abstraction contributing to Musimcheon stream. Various simulations of supply of groundwater to streamflow with current and maximum groundwater abstraction have been explored for 5 years (2011-2015). In 2015, when the severe drought happened, the monthly discharge change rate due to groundwater supply was ranged from 23% in current abstraction to 68% in maximum abstraction. In terms of annual groundwater recharge, these quantities could be applicable recharges ranged from 75 mm (6.2% of annual mean precipitation) to 290 mm (24% of annual mean precipitation) which could be stable annual supply. Since surface water is vulnerable to drought, the water supply using groundwater could be an effective alternative for stream deficiency.

  • Because groundwater recharge shows spatial-temporal variability due to climatic conditions, it is necessary to investigate land use and hydrogeological heterogeneity, and estimate the spatial variability in the daily recharge rate based on an integrated surface-groundwater model. The integrated SWAT-MODFLOW model was applied to compute physically based daily groundwater recharge in the Jincheon region. The temporal variations in estimated recharge were calibrated using the observed groundwater head at several National Groundwater Monitoring Stations and at automatic groundwater-monitoring sites constructed during the Basic Groundwater Investigation Project (2009-2010). For the whole Mihocheon watershed, including the Jincheon region, the average groundwater recharge rate is estimated to be 20.8% of the total rainfall amount, which is in good agreement with the analytically estimated recharge rate. The proposed methodology will be a useful tool in the management of groundwater in Korea.

  • Streamflow responses to irrigation reservoirs and groundwater withdrawals were simulated using the integrated surface-water and groundwater model, SWAT-MODFLOW for the upstream watershed of the Gongdo station located in the Anseong stream. The simulated results indicated that the irrigation water supply from the Gosam and the Geumkwang reservoirs has caused the decrease of 31.2%, 82.5% in drought flows below the reservoirs, respectively, against the natural flow condition. While, at the outlet of the study watershed, the effects of the irrigation reservoirs were insignificant due to the delayed return flows with the decrease of 5.7% in drought flow. Both of the irrigation reservoirs and groundwater withdrawals have reduced the drought flows by 19.2% at the Gongdo station.

  • By far, groundwater management has been conducted by 'safe yield' policy based on the estimation of annual average of groundwater recharge throughout the world. However, as groundwater recharge show spatiotemporal variation, dynamic analysis must be carried out to evaluate the sustainable groundwater resources. In this study, an integrated surface-groundwater model, SWAT-MODFLOW was used to compute the spatial distribution of groundwater recharge in Gyungju region. Frequency analysis is adopted to evaluate the existing values of potential amount of groundwater development which is made by the 10 year drought frequency rainfall multiplied by recharge coefficient. The conservative methods for estimating recharge rates of 10 year drought frequency in subbains are newly suggested and compared with the existing values of potential amount of groundwater development. This process will promote the limitations for existing precesses used for computing potential amount of groundwater development.

  • In this study, a watershed-based surface-water and groundwater integrated model, SWAT-MODFLOW was used to evaluate streamflow depletion induced by groundwater withdrawals and irrigation reservoirs for the Juksan-cheon watershed in South Korea. The streamflow responses to groundwater pumping and irrigation reservoirs were simulated under several different scenarios. The scenarios were (1) current pumping well withdrawals with reservoirs; (2) current pumping well withdrawals without reservoirs; (3) no pumping well withdrawals with reservoirs; (4) no pumping well withdrawals without reservoirs (natural condition). The simulated results indicated that the effects of groundwater pumping on streamflow depletion are a little more significant than those of irrigation reservoirs. Particularly, the groundwater withdrawals with irrigation reservoirs at current status (scenario 1) has induced the decrease of more than 20% in drought flow against the natural condition (scenario 4) at the outlet of the watershed. The specific drought flows through the main stream of Juksan-cheon watershed were simulated in order to assess the irrigation effects on downstream flows. It was found out that the specific drought flows are increasing as the distance from the reservoir increases due to the accumulation of the return flows to stream.
