  • The purpose of this study is to understand the ground change of large scale mountainous region and to estimate the active weak zone using geophysical exploration (electrical resistivity and refraction seismic explorations) in large scale deep landslide area located in Wanjugun, Jeollabukdo. We also analyzed the characteristics of deep landslides occurred in metamorphic rocks region and confirmed the approximate scale. As a result of comparative analysis of N-value by standard penetration test (SPT), low resistivity anomaly, and tension crack identified from field investigation, a discontinuity in soil layer was estimated at 10 ~ 15 m below the surface. Based on this results, the distribution pattern of active weak zone was confirmed between the discontinuity in soil layer and estimation line of bedrock.

  • Ongoing and extensive urbanisation, which is frequently accompanied with careless construction works, may threaten important archaeological structures that are still buried in the urban areas. Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) methods are most promising alternatives for resolving buried archaeological structures in urban territories. In this work, three case studies are presented, each of which involves an integrated geophysical survey employing the surface three-dimensional (3D) ERT and GPR techniques, in order to archaeologically characterise the investigated areas. The test field sites are located at the historical centres of two of the most populated cities of the island of Crete, in Greece. The ERT and GPR data were collected along a dense network of parallel profiles. The subsurface resistivity structure was reconstructed by processing the apparent resistivity data with a 3D inversion algorithm. The GPR sections were processed with a systematic way, applying specific filters to the data in order to enhance their information content. Finally, horizontal depth slices representing the 3D variation of the physical properties were created. The GPR and ERT images significantly contributed in reconstructing the complex subsurface properties in these urban areas. Strong GPR reflections and highresistivity anomalies were correlated with possible archaeological structures. Subsequent excavations in specific places at both sites verified the geophysical results. The specific case studies demonstrated the applicability of ERT and GPR techniques during the design and construction stages of urban infrastructure works, indicating areas of archaeological significance and guiding archaeological excavations before construction work.

  • The hydrogeologic structure in the Chojung area was evaluated from a set of geological and geophysical investigations: detailed geological survey, vertical electric sounding (VES), borehole logging, and controlled-source magnetotelluric (CSMT) survey. Among these, CSMT soundings were taken for integrated interpretation to extend hydrogeologic structure with depth. The result of CSMT survey along with VES and borehole logging provides the vertical geologic boundary connected with hydrogeologic structure, and also indicates the depth of aquifer in granite basement. To interpret the geologic boundary and aquifer characteristics using CSMT data, we adopted the technique of 1-D inversion with smoothness-constrained method and 2-D continuous profiling with 1-D Bostick inversion and spatial filtering. The methodology tested and adopted in this study would be useful and required for providing a more information to the structure of fractured aquifer system.

  • Electrical resistivity tomography was carried out at seawater intrusion monitoring wells located at watershed in coastal areas. It is difficult to identify the characteristics of resistivity near monitoring well in case of using high signalto-noise ratio array due to the high conductivity condition in coastal aquifer although electrical resistivity survey is well adopted to delineate hydrogeological characteristics with the distribution of electrical resistivity. To improve the quality of electrical resistivity survey for two sites with seawater intrusion monitoring wells, inversion with the results of holeto-surface electrical resistivity tomography using single well was executed. The results of inversion for aquifer near wells were verified with the results of drilling log with the informations of fracture, electrical conductivity logging and normal resistivity logging. The inversion for aquifer near one of two wells was also performed at low and high tide with the same electrodes, respectively. From the inversion result, it is possible to obtain the resistivity images with high resolution and to identify the characteristics of aquifer related to seawater intrusion with tidal fluctuation. From this study, it was demonstrated that the hole-to-surface electrical resistivity tomography method accompanied with drilling log, electrical conductivity logging and normal resistivity logging would be useful to delineate the hydrogeological structures near monitoring wells in coastal areas.

  • We investigated the weathering characteristics of On-Yang gneiss by means of geological survey and Ground Penetrating Radar(GPR). The results of geological survey and boring show the two sets of vertical joint and horizontal joint developed by foliation which is composed of salic and melanic layers. GPR section evidently shows foliation direction and differential weathering due to discontinuity and mineral composition of metamorphic rock. The GPR section for instantaneous phase attribute based on complex trace analysis evidently shows continuity and foliation direction of metamorphic rock. The strong reflection amplitude which is derived from the banded structure of weathered rock can be incorrectly interpreted as a reflection of bedrock. The depth of rock basement should be estimated from the overall exploration result such as boring, seismic method, and electrical resistivity method.

  • For analyzing the distribution of chromite, magnetic survey was carried out on the chromium mineralized belt in Bophi Vum area, northwestern Myanmar. As a result, the magnetic susceptibility of chromite is lower than those of dunite and harzburgite, which are background rocks of chromite. Also, the locations of low magnetic anomaly zone and low magnetic susceptibility models of 3D magnetic inversion result are spatially well matched with those of chromite occurrences confirmed by the surface geological survey and trench survey. Some of low magnetic effects are expanded to the periphery area of chromite occurrences. Considering the magnetic susceptibility characteristics of various rocks in this area, the expanded low magnetic anomaly zones are estimated as the high potential areas bearing chromite. For confirming the potential area of chromite pointed by coarse magnetic survey, the additional detail exploration need to be carried out in future.

  • Geophysical surveys(seismic refraction, electrical resistivity, and ground penetrating radar) were performed to delineate the weathering zone associated with vadose water in Chojeong area and investigate the fault related fracture zones. On the basis of seismic velocity structures, weathering layer for the southwestern part is interpreted to be deeper than for the northeastern part. The depth to bedrock(i.e., thickness of weathered zone) from seismic refraction data attempted to be correlated with drill-core data and groundwater level. As for the investigation of geological discontinuities such as fault related fracture zone, seismic refraction, electrical resistivity, and ground penetrating data are compositely employed in terms of velocity and resistivity structures for mapping of surface boundary of the discontinuities up to shallow depth. Surface boundaries of fracture zone are well indicated in seismic velocity and electrical resistivity structures. Accurate estimation of weathered zone and fracture zone can be successfully available for mapping of attitude of vadose water layer.

  • A three-dimensional finite difference time-domain modeling algorithm based on staggered grid and considering transmitting and receiving antennas has been developed to simulate Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) survey. This algorithm adopted the subcellular method to simulate the dipole antennas being used in GPR system and added resistors to reduce ringing caused by the reflections at the ends of an antenna. Comparison of the output voltages in the presence of the resistors for half-space said that the ringing and the amplitude of output voltage decreased as the number of resistors increased, and the antenna was designed based upon this result. Radiation patterns were derived to understand the distribution of electric field energy in the planes including or normal to the antenna. The electric field energy concentrated on vertical direction in the plane including antenna more than in normal plane.

  • The northern extension of the Dongrae Fault is inferred to transect the Ulsan Fault in the Gueo-ri area, Oedong-eup, ~15 km SE of Gyeongju City, Gyeongbuk province, S Korea. We conducted geological and geophysical (magnetic, electrical resistivity, and frequency domain electromagnetic) surveys to identify the extent and orientation of the Dongrae Fault in this region. Through joint interpretation of the geological and geophysical data sets, we confirm the presence of the Dongrae Fault and determine its strike ($N14^{\circ}E$). The Dongrae Fault is thought to cross the Ulsan Fault near Ipsil Bridge in the Gwangeo-ri area. Geophysical surveying revealed a fault damage zone that widens to the south, with a typical width of >200 m. Geological field surveys did not delineate the geometry of the Dongrae Fault because alluvial deposits overlie the fault in this area.
