  • Groundwater heat pump (GWHP) system can achieve higher performance of the system by utilizing heat source of the annual constant groundwater temperature. The performance of GWHP system depends on the ground thermal environment such as groundwater temperature, groundwater flow rate and hydraulic conductivity. In this study, the geothermal environment was analyzed by using numerical simulation for develop the two-well geothermal system. As the result, this paper shows the change of the groundwater level and underground temperature around wells according to the conditions of flow rate and hydraulic conductivity.

  • Recently, the use of buried glass fiber reinforced plastic (GRP) pipes is widespread and ever increasing trend in the industry. GRP pipes are attractive for use in harsh environments, such as for the collection and transmission of liquids which are abrasive and/or corrosive. The structural behavior of a GRP pipes buried under the ground is different from that of a rigid one made of concrete or clay, for example. A GRP pipe buried under the ground is deflected circumferentially by several percent and the stresses in the pipe are mainly compressive stresses. A GRP pipes has been introduced by a number of manufacturers for selection and used by underground pipeline designers. In all cases, the modified Spangler's equation is recommended by these manufacturers for predicting the ring deflection of these pipes under dead and live loads. In this paper, the ring deflection of buried GRP pipe is evaluated and discussed based on the result of analytical investigation.

  • The metallic underground pipes like as metropolitan water supply pipes and gas pipes have a screening effects for power induction phenomenon. Generally, urban area has more metallic underground facilities than rural areas because of its buildings or population density. So we can expect high screening effects for the power induction in urban areas, and we call it the city screening factor. We had carried out the measuring test in urban and rural area respectively 30 sites to prove the actual effects of city screening factor and we derived the numerical value of city screening effects. But we faced with a difficult question that how we can classify the real urban areas or rural areas correctly. In this paper, we introduce the classification method using density of building in test area to apply the city screening factor reasonably.

  • This study reviewed the overall process of application of contaminant fate and transport model as part of risk assessment. Site characterization and establishment of a conceptual model prior to establishing or selecting a appropriate model were described. Types of models, model selection guidance, and generic site conditions for model application were presented, the process of model calibration, validation, and sensitivity analysis were reviewed. Objectives of modeling should be defined before model selection, and the complexity of selected models should balance the quantity and quality of available input data with the desired model output. If model output is highly sensitive to an assumed or default value of input parameter, or fate and transport models cannot be adequately calibrated or validated, consideration should be given to other options such as using measured data or using another model.

  • The environment of electrical power industry is now faced on problems such as electric rates, an increasing sensitivity in society with environmental issues and energy factors. Up to now, reliability is greatly influenced by maintenance and environmental factors that are unique to the electric utilities. The reliability is a characteristic assigned to the electric power systems's function which is related to the concept of installment of equipment. Therefore this reports's key finding is that it is important that the utilities track their individual components' value over investment expense of their installed components. This can be accomplished to consider the cases of foreign electric power companies and take into account the various possible installment ways of equipment in Korea. These results are expected to be used as a reference material for design underground distribution facilities and future applications.

  • Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is a mitigation technology essential in tackling global climate change. In Korea, many research projects are aimed to commercialize CCS business around 2020. Public acceptance can be a key factor to affect the successful proceeds of CCS near future. Therefore this paper provides a concise insight into the application of environmental impact assessment and risk assessment procedures to support the sustainable CCS projects. Futhermore, bottlenecks regarding the environmental impacts assessment and related domestic and foreign legislation are revised. Finally, suggestions to overcome these bottlenecks and recommendations for future research are made in conclusion.

  • Lateral earth pressure and horizontal displacement of the diaphragm walls constructed in multi-soil layers were analyzed by the field instrumentation from six building construction sites in urban area. The distribution of the developed earth pressure of the anchored diaphragm walls during excavation shows approximately a trapezoid diagram. The maximum earth pressure of anchored diaphragm walls corresponds to $0.45{\gamma}H$ and the earth pressure acts at the upper part of the walls. The maximum earth pressure is two times larger than the empirical earth pressure of flexible walls in sands suggested by Terzaghi and Peck(1967), Tschebotarioff(1973), and Hong and Yun(1995a). The horizontal displacement of diaphragm walls is closely related with supporting systems such as struts, anchors, and so on. The horizontal displacement of anchored walls shows less than 0.1 percent of the excavated depth, and the horizontal displacement of strutted walls shows less than 0.25 percent of the excavated depth. Therefore, the restraining effect of horizontal displacement to the anchored diaphragm walls is larger than the strutted diaphragm walls. In addition, since the horizontal displacement of the diaphragm walls is lower than the criterion, $\delta=0.25%H$, used for control the anchored retention wall using soilder piles, the safety of excavation sites applied with the diaphragm walls is pretty excellent.
