  • According to the local highway tunnel ventilation guideline, ventilation capacity calculation should be performed at the speed ranging from 10 km/h to 80 km/h. This is so reasonable method considering uncongested and congested traffic conditions in urban tunnels. But recently due to low traffic volume and very low congestion frequency in rural highway tunnels, it seems to be an inadequate way to apply the guideline. Therefore the calculation should be performed separately for the free flow and congested traffic cases classified by the appropriate decision model. This paper aims at determining unnecessary running speed range for reasonable tunnel ventilation design, considering free flow and congested traffic conditions. Firstly, traffic volumes in highway tunnels were collected and if any, the causes of congestion were investigated. And with concept of 'margin speed'($u-u_m$), the decision model on traffic congestion was developed. Applicability of the decision model was also analyzed with case study. According to the results, when design speed is 100 km/h, with V/C less than 0.1, then the range of unnecessary speed in tunnel ventilation design is less than 40 km/h; for $V/C{\leqq}0.35$, $V/C{\leqq}0.6$ and $V/C{\leqq}0.75$, the unnecessary speed ranges are found to be ${\leqq}30$, ${\leqq}20$ and ${\leqq}10km/h$, respectively.

  • This paper proposes an image-based modeling method which recovers 3D models using projected line segments in multiple images. Using the method, a user obtains accurate 3D model data via several steps of simple manual works. The embedded nonlinear minimization technique in the model parameter estimation stage is based on the distances between the user provided image line segments and the projected line segments of primitives. We define an error using a finite line segment and thus increase accuracy in the model parameter estimation. The error is defined as the sum of differences between the observed image line segments provided by the user and the predicted image line segments which are computed using the current model parameters and camera parameters. The method is robust in a sense that it recovers 3D structures even from partially occluded objects and it does not be seriously affected by small measurement errors in the reconstruction process. This paper also describesexperimental results from real images and difficulties and tricks that are found while implementing the image-based modeler.

  • Spectral induced polarization (IP) responses for 20-degree dipping body are obtained by both numerical and scale models. The IP responses for the dipping body vary not only with current frequencies but also with resistivity ratios between the body and the surrounding medium. If the ion concentration related to polarizable reaction is constant, the resistivity of polarizable body depends only on the current frequency. This implies that the IP responses to the resistivity ratio are qualitatively equivalent to those to the current frequency. The numerical results with wide-range resistivity ratios, therefore, can be used as standard curves for the interpretation of spectral IP data.

  • Evaluation of fuel consumption for the various road condition and vehicle type is necessary to perform the economic analysis of road construction which is important for the efficient design and management of road. Economic analysis of road should consider the social cost which can be divided into agency cost including initial construction expense, maintenance cost, and so on, and user cost consisting of vehicle operating cost, congestion cost, etc. Since vehicle operating cost depends on the traffic volume, fuel consumption that is a major part of vehicle operating cost will change by traffic volume as well. Fuel consumption is significantly affected by vehicle speed and road condition, especially the roughness. Thus, fuel consumption should be evaluated in terms of road condition, which is not currently considered. In this study, the estimation model of fuel consumption for the passenger cars in Korea has been developed by considering the road condition. First, the relationship between vehicle speed and fuel consumption that is used to calculate the vehicle operating cost for investment evaluation of transportation facility and the initial feasibility study of road construction was investigated. Second, with the consideration of road roughness, fuel consumption of the passenger car was measured. From the measurement, it was found that fuel consumption increased by $80m{\ell}$ per 100km driving as the roughness increased by 1m/km. Therefore, it is recommended that for the economic analysis of road design and management, the fuel consumption should be a function of road roughness.

  • A micro-mechanical pipe network model with the shape of a cube was developed to simulate the behavior of fluid flow through a porous medium. The fluid-flow mechanism through the cubic pipe network channels was defined mainly by introducing a well-known percolation theory (Stauffer and Aharony, 1994). A non-uniform flow generally appeared because all of the pipe diameters were allocated individually in a stochastic manner based on a given pore-size distribution curve and porosity. Fluid was supplied to one surface of the pipe network under a certain driving pressure head and allowed to percolate through the pipe networks. A percolation condition defined by capillary pressure with respect to each pipe diameter was applied first to all of the network pipes. That is, depending on pipe diameter, the fluid may or may not penetrate a specific pipe. Once pore pressures had reached equilibrium and steady-state flow had been attained throughout the network system, Darcy's law was used to compute the resultant permeability. This study investigated the sensitivity of network size to permeability calculations in order to find out the optimum network size which would be used for all the network modelling in this study. Mean pore size and pore size distribution curve obtained from field are used to define each of pipe sizes as being representative of actual oil sites. The calculated and measured permeabilities are in good agreement.

(I/O ratio 2.5). • This study was carried out to develop and test a prototype program that recommends the nitrogen topdressing rate using the color digital camera image taken from rice field at panicle initiation stage (PIS). This program comprises four models to estimate shoot N content (PNup) by color digital image analysis, shoot N accumulation from PIS to maturity (PHNup), yield, and protein content of rice. The models were formulated using data set from N rate experiments in 2008. PNup was found to be estimated by non-linear regression model using canopy cover and normalized green values calculated from color digital image analysis as predictor variables. PHNup could be predicted by quadratic regression model from PNup and N fertilization rate at panicle initiation stage with $R^2$ of 0.923. Yield and protein content of rice could also be predicted by quadratic regression models using PNup and PHNup as predictor variables with $R^2$ of 0.859 and 0.804, respectively. The performance of the program integrating the above models to recommend N topdressing rate at PIS was field-tested in 2009. N topdressing rate prescribed for the target protein content of 6.0% by the program were lower by about 30% compared to the fixed rate of 30% that is recommended conventionally as the split application rate of N fertilizer at PIS, while rice yield in the plots top-dressed with the prescribed N rate were not different from those of the plots top-dressed with the fixed N rates of 30% and showed a little lower or similar protein content of rice as well. And coefficients of variation in rice yield and quality parameters were reduced substantially by the prescribed N topdressing. These results indicate that the N rate recommendation using the analysis of color digital camera image is promising to be applied for precise management of N fertilization. However, for the universal and practical application the component models of the program are needed to be improved so as to be applicable to the diverse edaphic and climatic condition.

  • Purpose To investigate the correlation between magnetic resonance (MR) image-based radiomics features and the genomic features of breast cancer by focusing on biomolecular intrinsic subtypes and gene expression profiles based on risk scores. Materials and Methods We used the publicly available datasets from the Cancer Genome Atlas and the Cancer Imaging Archive to extract the radiomics features of 122 breast cancers on MR images. Furthermore, PAM50 intrinsic subtypes were classified and their risk scores were determined from gene expression profiles. The relationship between radiomics features and biomolecular characteristics was analyzed. A penalized generalized regression analysis was performed to build prediction models. Results The PAM50 subtype demonstrated a statistically significant association with the maximum 2D diameter (p = 0.0189), degree of correlation (p = 0.0386), and inverse difference moment normalized (p = 0.0337). Among risk score systems, GGI and GENE70 shared 8 correlated radiomic features (p = 0.0008-0.0492) that were statistically significant. Although the maximum 2D diameter was most significantly correlated to both score systems (p = 0.0139, and p = 0.0008), the overall degree of correlation of the prediction models was weak with the highest correlation coefficient of GENE70 being 0.2171. Conclusion Maximum 2D diameter, degree of correlation, and inverse difference moment normalized demonstrated significant relationships with the PAM50 intrinsic subtypes along with gene expression profile-based risk scores such as GENE70, despite weak correlations.
