  • This study is to structurally examine the regional income disparity in Korea. It measures the regional income inducement by household consumption expenditure per unit income, and the regional interdependency of income using 2005 and 2015 Regional Input-Output Tables of 16 provincial regions of Korea. The results are as follows. Firstly, the income inducement by consumption expenditure per unit income decreased overall, mainly due to the decrease in the income inducement of other regions than due to that of their region. Secondly, in many regions, the inter-relational income dependency per unit income decreased also, this too, mainly due to the decrease in the income transfer to other region. And, the income inducement effects of consumption expenditure per unit income of Seoul and Gyeonggi, which occupy a large portion of the Korean economy, were lower than that of other regions, but took the largest portion of income inducements generated by other regions as well as by themselves and absorbed the income transfers from other regions the most. The higher income inducement and income absorption in Seoul and Gyeonggi by consumption expenditure of other regions were mainly because of the high share in service of their consumption structure, the progress in tertiarization of their industrial structure, and the high wage portion. These results also mean that viewed from the regional interdependency of income, the income of Seoul and that of Gyeonggi are highly dependent on the income of other regions. Especially, Gyeonggi which leads the overseas exports of high-tech based manufactured products, has other external factors that contribute to their high income inducement, whereas, Seoul which shows high income absorption using its inter-relations with other domestic regions based on the services, has an income-generating structure that is sensitive to other regions' economic situation. Amid overall declines in regional income inducements and in income transfers, and continuing concentrations into Seoul and Gyeonggi regions, to alleviate the regional disparity, the regional industry policies should, rather than benchmarking the policies of the two concentrated regions, enhance their own inter-regional relationships by strengthening the comparative advantage of their regionally specialized industry.

  • Using Seoul Welfare Panel Study, this research examines regional differentials in income and asset between Gangnam households and Non-Gangnam households in Seoul. Applying the Oaxaca decomposition method, it also decomposes factors associated with the differentials into explained and unexplained components. Results show that average monthly income is about 4 million won for Gangnam households and 3.2 million won for Non-Gangnam households. The explained component accounts for most of the income differential, which mainly originates from differences in the distributions of individual and household characteristics associated with the monthly income. The net asset differential between the two regions is much greater than the income differential. The net asset is about 460 million won for Gangnam households and approximately 280 million won for Non-Gangnam households. Most of the net asset differential is remained unexplained after controlling for covariates which measure demographic characteristics of householders and various features of labor market in which household members are employeed. It implies that other factors such as inter-generational transfers of wealth may play a significant role in creating the net asset differential.

  • The purpose of this paper is to examine the effect of income-mix on place attachment as civic pride in Seoul. Place attachment and social mix are considered important in urban planning. However, place attachment is frequently thought to form more strongly in the homogeneous area. On the other hand, social mix policy is aimed to form more heterogenous area. So, the two concepts are thought to be incompatible. This paper focused on the income-mix which is kind of social mix, and used the 2013 "Seoul Survey" and 2010 "Household Travel Diary Survey" data. Based on the review of the literature, we used the civic pride in Seoul as the indicator of place attachment. The results of this paper indicate that the degree of income-mix increases, place attachment in Seoul also increases. Also, it appears that as regional income levels get higher, the effects of income-mix on place attachment decrease.

  • This paper analyzed the effects the regional competitiveness index on the characteristics of the regional growth. This study divides the regions in the US based on the static and dynamic standard of income for the characteristics of the regional growth. The results of the analysis are as follows. First some regions such as Alaska, Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, Virginia, Washington and Wyoming have higher levels of SCI and both the rate of growth and per capita income than the national average. These are considered prosperous regions based on their high level of SCI. Second, in regards to the relation between the income level and regional competitiveness index for the regional growth, the variables such as human resource, science technology, business incubation, openness, safety and environmental policy are significant. Third, infrastructure, human resource, science technology and openness are the significant variables concerning the relation between the rate of income growth and regional competitiveness index for the regional growth.

  • The paper is basically designed to investigate how regional consumption affects to regional income in Korea by introducing a model with panel cointegration, rational expectation and FM-OLS cointegration methodology. Empirical evidence reveals that the regional income could be stimulated by manipulating the regional consumption due to the fact that current regional consumption and first-lagged regional income are positively related to the level of regional income. Although there exists a possibility to increase the regional income which is associated with a spending multiplier in the group of regions with highly calculated MPC, but not in the groups of regions with middle and low calculated MPCs. To this end, it could be tentatively concluded that market-oriented system should be implemented elaborately to enable that the spending multipliers are appropriately operated in these two groups.

  • In this paper, we attempt to study the trend of regional disparity among Chinese provinces and examine the effects of globalization on the disparities adapting panel data approach. The panel data set utilized consists of the annual variables of 29 provinces during 18 years from 1990 to 2007. The trend of inter-provincial disparities in the 1990s with the expansive trend but the trend has started to decrease since 2000. The results of the China case study show clearly that the provincial international trade level and ratio variables perform on regional income disparities remarkably in all cases. It means that the large development of international trade do with increased among provincial disparity. While due to the large area in the provinces, there exist urban-rural disparities within provinces could be one of the main source of regional disparities. Therefore, along with western regions development policy various development policies against small cities are necessary for balanced regional economic growth in China.

  • There are many factors that cause uneven regional developments in the country and one of main factors is outflow of regional income or products. The purpose of this study is to analyze regional production runoff by comparing GRDP and GRNI in basic local governments level. In this study, GRNI of basic local governments are estimated by local income tax data, The results of the study are as follows. Firstly, GRNI is more concentrated than GRDP. The analysis of Moran I showed that the spatial autocor-relation of GRNI is more distinct than that of GRDP. Local Moran I analysis shows that spatial hot spots and cold spots are more apparent in GRNI than GRDP. Secondly, the outflows of GRDP into a small number of regions are apparent. In about 80% of basic local governments, the net outflows of GRDP occur. The large net outflow regions are cities where manufacturing industry has developed and in the 20 lowest net outflow rate regions, 70-80% of GRDP outflows. The large net inflow regions are metropolitan area in Seoul and large local cities. Seocho-gu, Yongsan-gu, and Gangnam-gu in Seoul have a large net inflows and net inflow rates are over 90% of GRDP.
