A Study on the Sanctuary of the Residence in East China Sea Skirts Area (동중국해권 민가의 성역(聖域)에 관한 연구)

  • Jeju Island, in Korea, shows many characteristics that are differentiated from the rest of Korea. Its culture is rooted in mythology which advocates a egalitarian, rather than hierarchical, social structure, the place of women in the home is relatively high, and the formation of buildings, the separation of cooking and heating facilities, and the living format of residential homes is dissimilar. These disparities in culture indicate that Jeju Island's heritage was not formed only from influences from the North, but also from other places as well. To fill in the blanks, residential homes in Jeju Island were compared with those scattered throughout the East China Sea, which connect the southern coastline of the Korean peninsula and Jeju Island. The regions encompassed by the East China Sea, sharing the Kuroshio current and a seasonal wind, can be considered as one cultural region integrating cultural aspects from the continental North and the oceanbound South. The unique characteristics of southern culture as seen in southern residences was examined through an investigation of the sacred places in which gods were considered to dwell. First, the myths of these areas usually concerned with the ocean, and a sterile environment made sustenance impossible without a dual livelihood, usually taking on the forms of half-farming and half-fishing, or half-farming, half-gardening. Although family compositions were strongly matricentric or collateral thanks to southern influence, a patriarchical system like those found in the North were present in the upper classes and in the cities. Therefore, residential spaces were not divided based on age or gender, as in hierarchical societies, but according to family and function. Second, these areas had local belief systems based on animism and ancestor worship, and household deities were closely related to women, agriculture and fire. The deities of the kitchen, the granary and the toilet were mostly female, and the role of priest was often filled by a woman. After Buddhism and Confucianism were introduced from mainland Korea, China and Japan, the sacred areas of the household took on a dual form, integrating the female-focused local rites with male-centered Buddhist and Confucian rites. Third, in accordance with worship of a kitchen deity, a granary deity, and a toilet deity led to these areas of the home being separated into disparate buildings. Eventually, these areas became absorbed into the home as architectural technology was further developed and lifestyles were changed. There was also integration of northern and southern cultures, with rites concerning granary and toilet deities coming from China, and the personality of the kitchen deity being related to the southern sea. In addition, the use of stone in separate kitchens, granaries, and toilets is a distinguishing characteristic of the East China Sea. This research is a part of the results gained from a project funded by the Korea Research Foundation in 2006.

The Development of Gangnam and the Formation of Gangnam-style Urbanism : On the Spatial Selectivity of the Anti-Communist Authoritarian Developmental State (강남 개발과 강남적 도시성의 형성 - 반공 권위주의 발전국가의 공간선택성을 중심으로 -)

  • This article aims to explain how Gangnam, as a model and standard of compressed urbanization in South Korea, was created. Gangnam and Gangnam-style urbanization need attention not only because they contrast with Korea's urbanization in the past as well as urbanization in the West but also they provide an important model in contemporary Korea's politics, economy and culture. However, there are little studies of how Gangnam's peculiar urbanism was created. To fill this gap, this article will first capture Gangnam's peculiar urbanism as a material landscape and sociocultural lifestyle. Gangnam-style urbanism is (a) materially characterized by high-rise apartment complexes owned by the middle and upper class for dwelling and asset growth and (b) socio-culturally characterized by political conservatism, public indifference, competition over academic performance, appearance, and fashion, and nightlife. Then it will show Gangnam's archetype was created in a spatially and temporally compressed way in and through the spatial selectivity of Korean anti-communist authoritarian developmental state strategies: (1) anti-communism led to the diffusion and accommodation of the population through apartments in Gangnam in the context of its confrontation with North Korea and the fast-growing population of Seoul; (2) military authoritarianism excluded the low-income class and the urban poor from urban development; and (3) the developmental state adopted selective housing policy which treated construction companies and the middle class preferentially through exceptional zoning and price distortions, promoting the construction of apartment in Gangnam and its resultant uneven development.

Effect of Family Resilience of Self-Sufficiency Program Participants on the Will to Be Self-Sufficient: Focusing on the Mediating Effect of Family Support (자활사업 참여자의 가족탄력성이 자활의지에 미치는 영향: 가족지지의 매개효과를 중심으로)

  • This study explored how the family resilience of participants in self-sufficiency programs relates to their willingness to be self-sufficient and analyzed the mediating effects of family support in the relationship. The subjects of the study were 283 people in their 20s to 70s who are participating in a local self-sufficiency center in Gangwon-do. Statistical analyses were conducted using IBM SPSS 18, with descriptive statistics, difference verification and regression, and mediating effects analyzed following Baron & Kenny(1986). The results of the analysis are as follows. First, we conducted difference verification between the sociodemographic characteristics of participants in the self-sufficiency program and major variables. There was a significant difference in the willingness to be self-sufficient in terms of the caregiving family and household income. Family resilience differed significantly depending on age group, marital status, health condition, household type, caregiving family, and homeownership, while family support differed significantly in age group, marital status, health condition, household type, caregiving family, and debt. Second, we conducted a hierarchical regression analysis to determine the factors influencing the will of self-sufficiency of those participating in the self-sufficiency program and found that the better the health condition, the presence of caregiving families, and the higher the level of family resilience and family support, the higher the level of will to be self-sufficient. Third, analyses of the mediating effect following Baron & Kenny(1986) have shown that family support has a full mediating effect on the relationship between family resilience and the will to be self-sufficient. Thus, we have verified that family resilience and family support are important factors as an alternative to improving the level of willingness for self-sufficiency program participants.

Status of Satisfaction with Settlement Conditions and Residential Environment of Chungnam-do Residents (충남도민의 정주여건 거주환경의 만족도 현황)

  • This study is a study on the satisfaction of the living conditions of the residents of Chungcheongnam-do, and the analysis data was based on the results of the Chungcheongnam-do social survey conducted in 2020 by Statistics Korea. The results of the analysis on the satisfaction of the living conditions of the residents of Chungnam Province are summarized as follows. The level of satisfaction with the quality of life of the living environment, which is a personal characteristic, was 5.92 out of 10 for the degree of satisfaction with one's life, and 6.28 out of 10 for the overall value of the work one is doing. The overall life satisfaction of the region (city and gun) was analyzed as 5.81 out of 10, indicating that the satisfaction of Chungnam residents was more than average. In addition, satisfaction with the residential housing environment was analyzed with the highest frequency and ratio of 43.5%, with 226 people being slightly satisfied. Satisfaction with facility use was also slightly higher in 231 people, showing 44.5% response rate, and slightly higher in women than in men. This study is meaningful in that it provides basic data such as policy implications for improving the quality of life by grasping the social interests related to the quality of life and the subjective consciousness of the people of Chungnam.

Practical Strategies for Urban Regeneration through an Application of Landscape Urbanism (랜드스케이프 어바니즘 관점에서 본 도시재생 전략 연구)

  • This study aims to propose practical strategies for the new urban ideal of regeneration. A book review highlights the emergence of new trends of urbanization in knowledge-information industrial society beyond the new town Ideal of the industrial society. The meaning of ‘landscape’ in landscape urbanism represents not the visual and decorative pictures, but the dynamic process in the context of changes and evolutions. Also, knowledge-information industrial society and landscape have a meaning in the same context of flow and process with changes of velocity. Finally, these key words convey a meaning with the new urban trends of urbanization in knowledge-information industrial society in the context of value-oriented characteristics of dynamics and process. Urban regeneration is emerging as the new urban ideal in the knowledge-information industrial society, beyond the new town ideal of industrial society. It is in the same context as landscape urbanism with respect to green infrastructure buildings and designs for the transformation of urban surfaces covered with concrete and asphalt into the ecological surface, and of the ecological surfaces into the cultural surface that could be communicated with human beings. This research revealed the six strategies for urban regeneration as follows. The First, the strategies for the transformation of urban surfaces into ecological surfaces, the second, the strategies for the transformation of ecological surfaces into cultural surfaces, the third, the introduction of mixed and convergence land use, the forth, the transformation of former sites(e.g. military and factory) into urban parks, the fifth, the introduction of waterfront park zones that have the function of ecological and park-oriented mixed land use and, the sixth, the building and design of green infrastructure in the residential and commercial complex in CBD. These strategies call for the reforms of development laws and regulations to restrict building coverage ratio, building heights, and the introduction of park-oriented mixed zoning regulations. Another method for implementating the above listed strategies was the introduction of a strategic planning system instead of the traditional master plan system. This system uses a value planning approach and brand making by imagery. It is able to construct the meaning of an image and its creativeness directly.

Community Facilities in Apartment Complexes - Whether Provisions Match Residents' Preferences - (아파트 단지 내의 주민공동시설 현황과 선호 비교연구)

  • In Seoul, the capital of South Korea, developers of apartment complexes are responsible for including community facilities - senior citizen centers, child care centers, small libraries, and so forth - according to the current Regulations on the Housing Construction Standard Article 2 and 55. These standards have long required certain community facilities, depending on the number of households in each apartment complex, without fully considering whether such provisions meet that community's needs. In this study, we aimed to reveal whether the current provision of community facilities responds to local preference. We conducted surveys of residents in randomly selected ten apartment complexes in Seoul to determine residents' preferences on community facilities using the analytic hierarchy process (AHP). We then compared the survey results with these complexes' current facilities. Our findings showed mismatches between residents' preferences and provisions: outdoor sports facilities, child care centers, and small libraries were found to be strongly preferred, but not provided in some apartment complexes within the study, whereas less-preferred facilities such as senior citizen centers were provided in all complexes. Through this study, we could conclude that current standards regarding the provision of community facilities in Seoul's apartment complexes should be altered to reflect the preferences of residents in apartment complexes.

Phased Introduction of the New Transportation System under the Step-by-step Land Development Project (단계적 택지개발사업에 따른 신교통시스템 적정 도입방안 분석)

  • Recently, the paradigm of land development has been transformed from the joint development to the step-by-step development due to changes in socio-economic conditions. Nevertheless, the introduction of large-scale transportation facilities such as new transportation system tends to employ the joint development. Although new transportation system is eco-friendly, it occasionally fails at the beginning of the project because of high installation cost. Such phenomenon is caused by not only the system did not reflect the local characteristics but also did not respond to the step-by-step development. Accordingly, in order to introduce transportation system rationally, introducing new methods corresponding to the step-by-step development should be sought. In this study, we assumed that large-scaled land development site be achieved step-by-step development. and suggested the need for a phased introduction through benefit-cost analysis. The findings illustrated that the phased introduction shows economic efficiency with 30% increase of B/C compared to the bulk introduction. It also demonstrates that the bulk introduction under step-by-step development is more efficient than the bulk introduction under joint development.

Improvement of the Checklist for Residential Housing's Crime Prevention Accreditation Assessment (주거시설에 대한 CPTED 평가인증 기준 개선방안 연구)

  • Police crime statistics report that residential housing such as apartment, low rise, detached houses is the second most vulnerable to crime, which is closely followed by the number of street crimes. Also residential houses are often exposed to quality-of-life crime, e.g burglary. It threatens the basic human rights of house residents in terms of safety and comfort within the urban living environment. This study examines related precedent studies regarding the vulnerability of residential housing including studios, multi-family housing from the viewpoint of crime prevention through environment design(CPTED), extracted the elements and items suitable for the safety of residential facilities and the certification evaluation indicators and check items to be the basis for the checklist are derived. Based on these evaluation indicators and inspection items, we conducted on-site surveys of residential facilities in three areas of Seoul, Yongin and Asan, and the final draft of the checklist was revised based on the results of the field survey. There are 43 items on the 7 fields of evaluation in the final version of checklist, 11 items in the management and operation, 20 items in the surveillance, 7 items in the access control, 1 item in the territoriality, 2 items in the activity support, and 2 items in the security and safety facilities. In addition, various points of interest were added to allow the administrator of the residential facility to earn points for special measures taken for safety. This checklist can be appropriately modified and utilized in consideration of the characteristics of each facility. Korean national police agency has CPOs to check the residential facilities in their jurisdiction using checklists and to certify excellent facilities with high level of safety.

Actual Condition & the Need of Education for Elderly Housing Education Perceived by Adolescents (청소년이 인식하는 중학교 노년기 주생활 교육 실태와 교육 필요도)

  • This study is designed to support the development and the teaching of revised curriculum of 2007 "Technology & Home Economics" by investigating the actual condition and the necessity of education for elderly housing education. Questionnaire survey was conducted with 488 high school students in Gyeongnam in 2008. The data analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, One-way ANOVA, Duncan's multiple range test by using SPSS 14 program. The results showed that most of the students were dissatisfied with their middle school education of elderly housing due to the lack of interesting and practical contents. Thus, various teaching-learning methods where student can experience and experiment is needed. Also, the students demanded more of factors of elderly housing, spacing plan, elderly welfare service and less of three-generation housing and senior housing in their elderly housing education. The needs of education contents differed among students depending on variables such as sex, graduated middle school, household income, dwelling space and length of residential years. Therefore, revised 2007 curriculum of "Technology & Home Economics" should include required contents in related chapters. Because there are significant differences among textbooks about elderly housing, further attention needs to be paid to the new textbooks in order to include education contents evenly. At the same time, teachers should organize their teaching contents considering the divergence of variables. The effect of elderly housing education will be maximized if the revised curriculum consists of more experimental activities such as elderly simulation in the local community.

Air Pollution and Life Satisfaction in Korea (한국의 대기오염과 생활만족도)

  • This study is to investigate causal relationship between individual life satisfaction and air pollution, using ordered probit model with the KLIPS panel dataset for 1998-2008. As determinants, both individual economic and socio-demographic characteristics are considered. Empirical results show that the degree of air pollution has negative effects on individual life satisfaction. The effects of other variables are similar to those of existing studies. This study found that life satisfaction increases along with income increase. However, at a certain point, the increase of life satisfaction becomes smaller even with an increase in income, indicating non-linear effect. It implies that the Easterlin's paradox can be applied to Korea's case. The increase of the other person's income measured by income per capita in the region where respondent resides has negative effects on life satisfaction. On the other hand, a person who has married, own house, stayed healthy, and highly been educated is likely to have higher life satisfaction. Additionally, a person with many household members, urban resident, unemployed or self-employed are negatively correlated with life satisfaction.
