  • In order to apply strategic advanced project management to the Korean construction industry, the study conducted a comparative analysis of the project management body of knowledge of the advanced countries such as the USA and Japan as well as Europe. As a result, it was found that the connection to 'execution' of 'strategy' was highlighted as a common main issue in the theoretical background of project management body of knowledge, and strategic planning, which aligns 'program management' based on the integration of multiple project management and operations in single project with 'portfolio management' for selection and concentration, has been emphasized. Accordingly, the study built up the framework for the application of strategic advanced project management for strategic action in the Korean construction industry and proposed the following applicable solutions for implementation into the current Korean construction industry: 1) Innovate global competitiveness by preparing an 'ideology and philosophy' for the strategic action of an organization, 2) Establish a strategic 'environment' in consideration of the culture and structure of an organization, 3) Propose a strategic 'vision' for attaining a realizable goal within an organization, 4) Create an 'investment' on the portfolio in line with the strategy, 5) 'Execute' the program through the portfolio and project management. Lastly, the study brought up strategies for sustainable growth by applying strategic advanced project management to the Korean construction industry with a view to acquiring 'Performance' through the implementation and operation of their integrated system.

  • This study developed teaching-learning materials for 10 class periods that applies design thinking process for the units of 'sustainable consumption' of home economic subject, and examined the learning experience of students in the class. After the classes, reflection journals and in-depth interviews from 276 male and female students in ten classes were analyzed. The main results are as follows: The five steps of the design thinking process of the Stanford University d-School were applied to develop teaching-learning materials for the 'Sustainable Consumption Practice Book Creation Project'. Students' positive learning experience was evidenced through sustainable consumption classes that applied design thinking. The students were able to reflect through the experience of sympathizing with the real problem, and experienced an improvement in problem-solving ability through the process of idea construction and prototyping. Students expressed difficulties in reaching consensus among the members, and in devising ideas and implementing prototypes. Based on the learning experience of students this study, it is suggested that home economic teachers further develop and implement classes of various topics to which design thinking process is applied. A future study may need to verify the effectiveness of home economic classes to which design thinking is applied.

  • The goal of international development projects is to assist sustainable development in recipient countries through foreign aid from donor countries. However, despite the need for both countries to negotiate and work together from the initial stages to maintain sustainability after the project, clear guidelines or standards have not been established. Additionally, despite the need for donor countries, which are relatively advanced, to understand the situation of recipient countries, many projects are donor-centric and fail to prioritize the value of sustainability. Therefore, this study extracted economic, social, and environmental risks that threaten sustainability through literature review and proposed a sustainability framework based on these criteria. To validate framework, actual international development cases conducted by advanced donor countries such as Australia, the United States, and Japan, in collaboration with South Korea, were analyzed by applying content analysis with the reports, which covers the overall contents from the planning stage to the operation stage. Analysis of sustainability perspectives focused on economy, society and the environment, advanced donor countries emphasized (1) the importance of pre-assessment, (2) the need for coordination with the local population and communities despite the existence of donor-specific values, and (3) addressing economic considerations such as pre-operational and maintenance costs, social communication with the local population, and environmental considerations starting from the initial stages of construction regarding the treatment of pollutants as values to be improved. Compared to other advanced donor countries, the Republic of Korea should also focus on consultation with local residents to achieve social integration, and improve sustainability by deployment the managers in local sites for better negotiation. The proposed framework in this study will serve as a tool to enhance communication among the countries and the locals, with the expectation of increasing project efficiency and sustainability.

  • Since the global financial crisis, the Korean domestic construction market has continuously experienced downturns, and the Korean domain construction firms'profitability has been persistently deteriorated. Domestic construction firms have rapidly advanced to overseas markets exclusively for the construction contract packages. However, the profitability for the construction contracts has been lower compared to engineering or project management contracts. One of the critical issues the Korean firms have faced was project management capability across all phases in project execution. Even though several project management capability assessment tools were introduced, most tools were applicable to a wide variety of industry sectors rather than construction industry. Project management capability assessment tool specifically applicable to domestic CM firms was developed through this research, in order to assess project and program management capabilities and improve the competitiveness in overseas market Also, the correlation between project, programs, and the CM infrastructure were identified. The CM firms were divided into two groups according to the size of the business, and both were evaluated at the project and the program level based for the 9 different criteria. The project management capability assessment tool developed for the CM firms can be used for self-assessment to distinguish the strengths and weaknesses of each company at the project and program level. In addition, the current status of each group can be identified by spotting improvement areas for the management capabilities.

  • Owner's participation on a construction project can alter the success of a construction project. In general, success of a construction project is measured by project schedule and cost decrease without considering the role an owner has in a project. As a result, this research developed a framework for the project evaluation form and after extracting a total of 9 project critical success factors (CSF) and 27 sub-CSF. AHP method was utilized to evaluate the importance factor of each CSFs. Setting a goal for each CSFs at the beginning of a project and comparing the values at the completion of the project utilizing the project evaluation form will allow a systematic evaluation and management of a project. Solution Map was introduced and Solution Tool was suggested in order to utlize the evaluation results effectively. In the future studies, various project cases needs to be supplemented for further verification and a solution based on the evaluation result needs to be developed that can be applied to construction projects.
