  • Amid intense port competition in Northeast Asia, international ports require sustainable growth based on competitiveness that incorporates economic, social, and environmental perspectives. Despite the importance of sustainability issues in port competition, prior studies on port competitiveness have focused on ports' own handling capacities. Moreover, sustainability concerns have focused on environmental issues such as environmental impact minimization and environmental index development. The prior literature makes distinctions between studies of port competitiveness and works relating to port sustainability. Therefore, this paper aims to redefine sustainable port competitiveness based on the "triple bottom line," comprising sustainability, analysis of the relevant issues, and practices. The findings offer not only important steps in building knowledge about sustainable port competitiveness, but also provide practical implications for strategic agendas and guidance for future improvements in port operations.

  • This paper starts with a model of monopolistic competition and endogenous growth, and it adds pollution as an input to production. Then I adopt environmental quality as a renewable resource used in production. I show that increasing returns due to specialization of clean activities as inputs can help lead to sustainable growth with no harm to environmental quality. I also compare and evaluate alternative policy combinations (i.e. taxes +subsidies) that correct two distortions from pollution and monopolistic competition. Finally, I find that, if the productivity of environment in final good production is not sufficiently enough, the number of clean goods tends to increase with more environmental concerns.

Five Indices of SSaM-GG(=Smart, Shared, and Mutual- Green Growth) for Sustainable Development

  • The 'SSaM-GG'(=Smart, Shared, and Mutual- Green Growth) as the five bottom lines for sustainable development is developed and suggested. Because the name of Green Growth alone is not sufficient for clear conceptualization, implementation. and etc. For the global harmonized usage & application, the Eastern-Western conceptual fusion has been performed, and verified for more than 12 years on the worldwide successes and failures.

A Study On Balance Factors for the Sustainable Growth of Technology-Based Companies: Focusing on the Case of Daedeok Cluster Successful and Unsuccessful Companies

  • This study approached the factors affecting companies's sustainable growth by overcoming the valley of death after starting a business from the perspective of technology, market, location, cluster, and INC model, and conducted a case study on success and failure companies in Daedeok Cluster to explore the adequacy and suitability of the main factors of previous studies. The results of this study suggest that location accessibility-based collaboration between innovators is important for the growth of companies in the cluster, and balanced growth such as innovative ideas, market needs, and capability to meet needs is necessary for companies' products and services to create innovative value in the market. This study is worth in that it presents factors for sustainable corporate growth through the analyses of success and failure cases for companies in the Daedeok Cluster. In addition, the research is successful in that it proposed a policy support plan based on collaboration among companies to foster companies in the cluster.

  • Purpose of this paper is to review series of Limits to Growth studies from its original Rome Club Report published in 1972 to the most recent one in 2012 by Jorgen Randers and finds its implications on concept and strategy of sustainable development. For this purpose first, this paper reviewed series of Limits to Growth studies in details with focus on scenarios used in simulation of world model. Second, response to the original Limit to Growth was reviewed and to see validity of its scenario based simulations, simulated results of interest variables and actual historical data up to the year 2010 was compared. Third, structure and key arguments in both studies, Limit to Growth studies and Our Common Future was explained and compared. Finally, implications of the Limit to Growth studies on concept and strategy for sustainable development was discussed. Based on the comparison, this paper argued that even if the term sustainable development was not used in the Limit to Growth at all, concept and strategies for sustainable development implied in the Limit to Growth are more clear and specific than those of Our Common Future. Since Limit to Growth studies were simulation based ones that produce detailed behaviors on interest variables, it clarifies more clearly the abstract concept of sustainable development and thus, provides specific guidelines for the direction of sustainable policy which has been suffering long from vagueness of concept of sustainable development.
