A Study on the Classification of Podcasting Users in the Smartphone Era - Podcasting of Terrestrial Radio Programs (스마트폰 시대의 팟캐스팅 이용자 유형화 연구 - 지상파 프로그램의 팟캐스팅을 중심으로)

  • The idea to conduct this study stemmed from the following question: What is the appropriate interpretation of the recent change in the user behavior of radio listeners? For some terrestrial radio programs, traditional listeners who mainly listen to them real-time through terrestrial radio broadcasting has been outnumbered by those who access them on smartphones and other mobile devices in a nonlinear way outside the pre-scheduled time slots of the programs. In the research, how terrestrial radio listeners use the new service called podcasting to access and consume audio content were examined by using Q methodology. As a result, three different types of user behavior and perception were modeled. This shows a prominent change in radio content use, which is moving away from the conventional user behavior pattern of radio content, one of the key media for mass communication in the 20th century. Such a development opens up new opportunities to create the same or even a greater user base compared to the existing one for terrestrial radio programs with the users' newly gained mobile access and to replace current radio content by using podcasting as a new service.

Mechanism of Windowing of Domestic Free TV Programs (국내 지상파 방송 콘텐츠의 창구화 메커니즘 분석)

  • Domestic free TVs play roles as for contents provider and TV station : they need to acquire not only ad revenues but also distribution revenues from internet service, cable channel and DMB. It is however doubtful to keep the windowing of programs through the different windows due to recent decrease of ad revenues of the stations. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to search for the mechanism of windowing of free TV's programs and the strategy of the distribution. As a result, the life cycle of the broadcasting programs is so short to be distributed within 7 days, Regarding the windowing, there are at first the strategy increasing the accumulated revenue by the diversification of the windows ; secondly, the strategy focusing on the prospective window neglecting the holdback. It is necessary to choose to take the appropriate strategy by the particularity of each program and the market background.

  • With the rapid change of broadcasting industry, the dominant market power of Korean free TV is going down. The purpose of this study is to estimate what is their strategy to recover the actual difficulties as for advertising media and production company. We will focus on mainly their horizontal diversification, MPP(multiple program provider). They will be classified and analysed by 5 portfolio types of Aaker: Cashcow Brand, flanker Brand, Strategic Brand, Silver Bullet Brands and Branded Energizer. For this, we will study the data from Korean Broadcasting Committee, home page of each channels, etc. At result, since MPP(multiple program provider), affiliates of Korean free TV have the stable advertising revenues compared with other cable channels, there are many cases of Cashcow brands which need few supplementary investment from the parental company and influence positively for the other channel brands.

  • The terrestrial DMB receivers and their application products need many tests such as normal reception, reception state for the noisy environment, reception state changes due to the changes of output power of the DMB signal, and reception state of various environment. Therefore, the real-time simulation system of the terrestrial DMB broadcasting system is a necessity to the terrestrial DMB research institutions. manufacturers, and other related organizations. In the paper, we design the DMB simulation system, which generates the real-time streams of terrestrial DMB broadcast signals and simulates the real DMB broadcasting signals. The system consists of T-DMB signal generator with PCI interface and simulation software for various functional components of program. The study reveals that the implementation of software-based T-DMB simulation system is possible with low cost. Through various experiments, we evaluate the performance of the simulation system, and we provide the future directions of research.

  • T-DMB(Terrestrial Digital Multimedia Broadcasting) system, is based on the Eureka-147 standard, provides various multimedia data services. However T-DMB system needs upgrades for more various services and better services. Therefore, we proposed advanced T-DMB system using unequal error protection system and hierarchical modulation in this paper while maintaing backward compatibility. And we simulated various bit split methods and double binary turbo code of DVB-RCS standard as method of LP data stream for additional service of advanced T-DMB. As the simulation results, double binary turbo code of proposed advanced T-DMB system have each coding gain of over 2 dB compared to conventional T-DMB.

DTV 모니터링 시스템

  • 지난 96년 7월 국내 최초로 위성 디지털 시험방송을 시작한 KBS는 2001년 12월에 한국디지털위성방송 컨소시움인 스카이라이프에 참여하여 서비스를 제공하고 있으며, 지상파방송에서도 1년여 기간동안의 시험방송을 끝으로 2001년 11월부터 디지털 본방송을 실시하고 있다. 이러한 디지털방송 시대를 준비하는 과정의 일환으로 KBS 기술연구소에서는 98년 디지털 위성방송의 송출 및 수신상태 및 스트림의 이상 유무를 모니터링 할 수 있는 위성방송용 모니터링시스템을 개발하였으며, 지난 2000년에는 지상파 디지털방송을 모니터링 할 수 있는 지상파 DTV 방송용 모니터링 시스템을 개발하였다. 이 두 가지 시스템은 앞으로 본격화될 디지털방송 시대에 크게 기여할 것이다. 본 고에서는 지상파 디지털방송 모니터링 시스템의 특징과 기능에 대해서 서술하였다.

  • The core of contents monetization is the consumer's willingness to pay. In the past, the terrestrial contents can be used through the frequency for free. As the terrestrial contents use via online services has been increased, the importance of willingness to pay for the broadcasting contents is getting bigger. To find critical factors which can influence on the willingness to pay for the terrestrial contents, independent factors are categorized into three. The independent factors are users' awareness for copyright protection, contents characteristics, and platform characteristics. The results show that attitude for paying, subjective norms for copyright protection, rapid providing of contents, quality of service, social critical point, and expected service value are found out as significant factors. This result implies that it is necessary to enhance platform competitiveness to survive in convergence environment and customer relationships should be reinforced to maintain them as loyal customers.

A Study on Users' Perception on the Reallocation of 700MHz Spectrum After Digital Transition of Terrestrial Broadcasting (지상파 방송의 디지털 전환 완료 이후 700MHz대역 주파수 재배치에 대한 이용자 인식 연구)

  • This study investigates the users' preference of frequency reallocation and frequency auction after digital transition of terrestrial broadcasting and it focuses on the relationships between media using pattern, reception environment of broadcasting telecommunication, and expectation for the universal service and requirement for the public interest. The results show that the longer DMB viewing hours, people prefer to frequency allocation for the telecommunication side. The technical aspects such as perception on the reception environment of broadcasting don't make effect on the users' preference of frequency allocation. In addition, the more people think the universal service of terrestrial broadcasting important, the more people think it unnecessary to adopt auction system to the broadcasting frequency. These results give implication that it is the most basic condition to improve the reception environment in order to accomplish universal service duty of terrestrial broadcasting.

  • This paper presents a digital video broadcasting - terrestrial (DVB-T) receiver system based on the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation method, which has exhibited a good reception performance even with obstacles and a mobile reception. As such, an improved OFDM receiver is developed for a DVB-T system that also considers function expansion for further development. After manufacturing the DVB-T receiver system, the performance of the proposed system is compared with three other hardware systems, all of which are end products. The experimental results confirm the performance using the measured minimum required carrier-to-noise ratio and threshold of visibility signal for each system. In addition, a graphic user interface (GUI) and electronic program guide (EPG) are developed for the digital television user.

  • 하이브리드라디오는 지상파 라디오방송(FM/DAB/DAB 등)과 인터넷망을 포함하는 통신망을 연결하여 단방향이라는 지상파방송의 한계를 극복하고 양방향을 구현하는 것으로 스마트폰을 중심으로 유럽과 미국 등지에서 보급되고 있다. 많이 사용하는 스마트폰에서 지상파 라디오방송(FM/DAB/DAB+ 등)을 수신하여 라디오의 활용을 높이기위한 서비스이다. 국내에서는 신규로 출시되는 스마트폰에 부터 FM 방송을 수신할 수 있도록 할 전망이다. 이 또한 하이브리드라디오는 지상파방송이 수신이 안될 경우 인터넷망으로 전환하여 IP 스트리밍 방송으로 계속 사용할 수 있고, 다양한 데이터를 통신망으로 전달하여 사용할 수 있다. 유럽은 radioDNS 라는 곳에서 하이브리드라디오관련 표준을 제정하고 있다. 여기서 표준화되었거나 진행중인 서비스에 대해 간략히 소개하고, 활용가능한 서비스 모델들에 대해 설명한다. 하이브리드라디오를 도입시 고려해볼 사항에 대해서도 생각해 보고 또한 하이브리드라디오와 유사한 방송과 통신의 융합 서비스인 스마트 DMB 에 대해 설명하고 대해 설명하고자 한다.
