  • The purpose of the study presented in this paper is to develope the general model for capture of the linear and nonlinear response of a flexible diaphragm building in which there are significant contributions from the out-of-plane walls. Two single-story single-diaphragm half scale reinforced masonry buildings were tested by researchers at the United States Army Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (CERL). The first had a metal deck diaphragm. The second specimen had a diaphragm with a single layer of diagonal lumber sheathing, A multiple degree of freedom (MDOF) approach is adopted in this paper. The required stiffnesses and strengths of the components within this model are determined.

  • This is a comparative structural analysis for a steel roof LNG storage tank that has some advantages relatively in designing larger scale tanks and construction cost, etc. compared with a conventional concrete roof LNG storage tank as the capacity of LNG storage tanks is bigger. Structural analysis was performed on a 200,000$k{\ell}$ steel roof LNG storage tank and a concrete of the same capacity in condition of three critical load combination cases, a normal operation, a LNG spillage and seismic case by using finite element method. And comparative structural safety evaluation was carried out by using strength ratio in places of concrete wall, foundation and roof with a quantitative method.

  • In recent years, the use of cold-formed steel roof truss has been increased in the steel houses and high-rise apartments. The design of the roof truss anchor connections has been based on the experience and decision of designers. In this paper, the structural behavior of anchor connections based on experimental and decision is described. In the tests, truss members and connection members were jointed directly with self-drilling screw fasteners and the simple shaped connection member with excellent workability and structural capacity was used to connect roof truss and sub-structure. The connecting method was selected according to the construction material of sub-structure: chemical anchor for reinforced concrete structure and welding or DX-Pin for steel structures. The pull-out tests of various type anchor connection were executed to obtain the strength and the stiffness and the result have been compared with AISI(1996) and AlSC(1989) specifications, Simple formulas for the shear strength of screw connections have been propose and compared with tests.

  • In this study, mechanical role of edge beams in the gabled hyperbolic paraboloid shells was investigated through the comparisons of Finite element(FE) analysis results between the shells structures with and without edge beams. In addition, the effects of roof slope was studied. FE analysis showed that roof loads was directly transferred to the supports at corners by the arch action in the diagonal direction of the shells, thus, less member forces in the edge and ridge beams but higher stresses near supports were estimated than those from the membrane theory. When the edge beams were removed, stress concentration in the shells near the supports and the deflections along the shell edge were increased. Such phenomenon were intensified as the roof slope decrease. Thus, in gable hyperbolic paraboloid shell, the thickness of the shell near supports needs to be increased and careful investigation should be made in the cases when the roof height is low and/or the edge beams are removed.

  • An economic analysis is one of the most important factor to determine tile project feasibility. In some mega project, however, it is not unique factor to make a Go or No-Go decision because of overriding this work, an economic aspect by some project indirect factor such as political, social, environmental and technical factor, etc. The purpose of the this study is to investigate the cost model effects of spatial structure.
