A program for predicting rate of penetration of sheet pile using cone penetration test results was developed. Especially, energy consumption occurring from lateral vibration of sheet pile was estimated quantitatively in order to overcome overprediction of rate of penetration for shallow depths of pile installation. Penetration rates of pile calculated from developed program were compared with those of field test. Predicted rates of pile penetration for the depths to 12m were $47%{\sim}120%$ of the measured values. As pile penetration depth decreases, the difference between the predicted rate of penetration and the measured rate of penetration decreases.
To evaluate the applicability of dielectric constant measurement method on the geoenvironmental investigation of subsurface contaminated by landfill leachate, the analysis on dielectric characteristics of sand containing contaminated pore water by landfill leachate was performed. The separate real and imaginary parts of dielectric constant were investigated in the frequency range of 75kHz to 12MHz. The real part of dielectric constant increased at the lower frequency wherea the real part of dielectric constant decreased at the higher frequency as the concentration of leachate increased. These results can be explained by the frequency dependence of space charge polarization and orientation polarization. The imaginary part of dielectric constant on the contaminated sand with leachate increased with their concentration for whole frequency range. These results are caused by the increase of energy loss due to the enhancement of conduction in soil with leachate concentration. The results in this study indicate that the dielectric constant measurement method has potential in evaluating the contaminated soil and pore water by landfill leachate.
In this study, the deposition of dredged soils from domestic rivers is simulated in the laboratory using a small soil box. In the tests, small sand with 0.002-0.85 mm, large sand with 0.85-2 mm, and gravel 4.75-5.6 mm are air or water-pluviated into the box. Such various deposition processes are simulated and their dry densities are measured. While dredging or piling such soils, their volume may change. The loss of such soils is calculated by a soil conversion factor C. The C value was determined as 0.91 for small sand, 0.96 for large sand, and 0.91 for gravel. The drainage through soil piles may occur and result in effective stress increase. This may cause the volume change of soils and in order to consider such effect it is necessary to recalculate C values. As a result, dry density increased by 5-12% when the drainage effect is considered. When the drainage effect is considered, the value of soil conversion factor C was 0.81 for small sand, 0.92 for large sand, and 0.82 for gravel. Eventually, the C value decreased up to 4-12%.
Cavity causes settlement and its remediation after an accident results in significant time and economic losses. This study aims to experimentally evaluate the prospect of using infrared camera to detect and measure underground subsidence. Emissivity is necessary to detect the energy emitted from an object and accurately assess temperature using an infrared camera. The emissivity in laboratory tests is fixed to evaluate a reasonable distance between the infrared camera and the object, and temperature values are assessed at various distances. In field experiments, the cavity of the field experiment is simulated using a PVC pipe with a diameter of 5 cm, artificially buried at depths of 5 and 25 cm from the surface. The infrared camera measurements are taken from 4 PM to 3 PM of the next day (a total of 23 h). The analysis included the time-series temperature distribution and the cooling rate index assessment, which represents the temperature change rate per unit of time. The results showed that various temperature trends are observed depending on the location of the subsidence. This study demonstrates that the infrared camera can be used to assess the condition of the subsurface.
In this study, a new cleaning method using carbon dioxide pellet in the part of underground pipe cleaning method was proposed and verified. First of all, the commentary of The Society for Protective Coatings was examined in detail to determine the quantitative cleaning effects. Also, field tests were carried out to confirm the application of the new method. In the test, the surface condition of inner pipe after the application of the new method was investigated and two types of nozzles were compared in the tests. Also, the tests to measure the final impact pressure of air and carbon dioxide pellet mixtures were performed to investigate the losses of air pressure were investigated. Through this verification on the new method, it was found that the new method is very efficient for the removal of the rust in the pipe cleaning works. Also, the nozzle with excellent cleaning effect was also selected. As a result, this method will be able to largely contribute to the recycling of $CO_2$ which is limited to the use as a cooling agent or the storage of waste.
In this study, exfoliated vermiculite (EV) coated with glycerol was tested for its abiility to remove phosphorus in aqueous solution. The glycerol modified vermiculite (GS) was prepared with EV/glycerol ratio of 1/4 where glycerol contained 4 mol% $H_2SO_4$ and heated until designated temperature. GS heated at $380^{\circ}C$ showed that the specific surface area was $53.1m^2/g$ and mass loss due to oxidation of carbon was maximum from TGA analysis. Removal of phosphorus using GS heated at $380^{\circ}C$ was well explained by Langmuir isotherm model and maximum sorption capacity of 714.3 mg/kg is comparable or greater than those of other clay orignated sorbents for phosphorus.

This study was performed to identify the presence of measurement distortions such as electrode polarization and to investigate the influence of soil water content on complex permittivity at low frequency. In low frequency measurement using two-terminal electrode system, electrode polarization effect was observed at frequencies less than approximately 100 HBz. The analysis for real permittivity should be performed at frequencies above 100 kHz in order to exclude electrode polarization effect in the analysis of real permittivity at low frequency measurements. For a given soil, both of real and effective imaginary permittivity of wet soil increased continuously with volumetric water content. This is evidenced by the facts that the real permittivity is proportional to the number of dipole moments per unit volume and effective imaginary permittivity is effected by the conduction due to water. However, proportional relation between real permittivity and volumetric water content is valid at upper MHz frequencies.
The finite element method and statistics of the convergence measurement are useful method of the stability analysis of the tunnel adjacent to the pier. It is the purpose of the this case study to certificate of validity of the application of those methods. The safety of the pilot tunnel method and LW pre-grouting has been evaluated from the FEM analysis. The three-dimensional finite element method is carried out for the decision of the level of stress redistribution at the two-dimensional numerical analysis. An analysis of the convergence is carried out by the estimation of preceding convergence at tunnel
excavation. F-examination is applied for this estimation. As results of that analysis, The F-value is from 10.81 to 158.74 and the coefficient of determination is from 0.82 to 0.99. An analysis of convergence is carried out by using regression analysis. Consequently, it is shown that the convergence can be modeled as following function C(t) = a[1-exp(-bt)].
As a material for preventing spalling of concrete, the effectiveness of PP fiber has already been confirmed. However, it is necessary to consider the maximum temperature that occurs during a fire, and to solve the mixing problem and the strength reduction problem that occur depending on the mixing amount. In this study, the fire resistance performance of tunnel segment linings according to the PP fiber content and air volume under the RABT fire scenario was investigated. As a result, no spalling or cross-sectional loss occurred in all test specimens, and when the PP fiber content was small, the maximum temperature was relatively high and the maximum temperature arrival time was also fast. On the other hand, no trend was found for the maximum temperature and arrival time according to the difference in air volume. In the internal temperature distribution results for the PP fiber mixing amount of 0.75, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 kg/m3, the results of 0.75 and 1.0 kg/m3 showed similar temperature distribution, and the results of 1.5 and 2.0 kg/m3 were similar. It was confirmed that the internal temperature distribution tends to decrease at the same depth when the amount of PP fiber mixed is large, and it was confirmed that a remarkable difference occurred from the results of 1.0 kg/m3 and 1.5 kg/m3 of PP fiber mixed amounts.
