  • Since water flow in the ground depends on the pore structure composed of soil grains, equations to predict the hydraulic properties based on the grain size have low accuracy. This paper presents a methodology to compute constriction-pore size distribution by Silveria's method and estimate saturated and unsaturated hydraulic properties of soils. Well-graded soil shows a uni-modal pore size distribution, and poor-graded soil does a bimodal distribution. Among theoretical models for saturated hydraulic conductivity using pore size distribution, Marshall model is well-matched with experimental results. Model formulas for soil-water characteristic curves and unsaturated hydraulic conductivity using the pore size distribution are proposed for hydraulic analysis of unsaturated soil. Continuous research is needed to select a model suitable to estimate hydraulic properties by applying the developed model formulas to various soils.

  • Geotechnical engineering problems are characterized by many sources of uncertainty. Some of these sources are connected to the uncertainties of soil properties involved in the analysis. In this paper, a numerical procedure for a probabilistic analysis that considers the spatial variability of soil properties is presented to study the response of spatially random soil. The approach integrates a commercial finite difference method and random field theory into the framework of a probabilistic analysis. Two-dimensional non-Gaussian random fields are generated based on a Karhunen-$Lo{\grave{e}}ve$ expansion in a fashion consistent with a specified marginal distribution function and an autocorrelation function. A Monte Carlo simulation is then used to determine the statistical response based on the random fields. A series of analyses were performed to study the effects of uncertainty due to the spatial heterogeneity on the settlement and bearing capacity of a rough strip footing. The simulations provide insight into the application of uncertainty treatment to the geotechnical problem and show the importance of the spatial variability of soil properties with regard to the outcome of a probabilistic assessment.

  • Precise analysis of soil-structure interaction requires a proper description of soil profile. However, such approach becomes generally nearly unpractical for soil exhibiting material discontinuity and complex geometry since meshes should match that material discontinuity line. To overcome these difficulties, a different numerical integration method is adopted in this paper, which enables to integrate easily over an element with material discontinuity without regenerating mesh fellowing the discontinuity line. As a result the mesh is highly structured, loading to very regular silliness matrix. The influence of the shape of soil profile on the response is examined and it is seen that the proposed soil-structure analysis method can be easily used on soil-structure interaction problems with complicated soil profile and produce reliable results regardless of material discontinuities.

  • Material properties of geomaterials are usually heterogeneous. And the limitted number of investigation for the subsurface material properties in terms of boreholes are not sufficient enough for identifying the heterogeneity. In most civil engineering work, pre-investigation results can be different from those by in-situ inspection during the construction work. With these points of view, a new analysis concept aiming to evaluate the uncertainty resulted from the heterogeneity of the geomaterial properties as well as to enhance a construction workability and design qualify by a prompt feedback of in-situ conditions was proposed. It was accomplished by linking the Element Free analysis and pre-developed stochastic methods represented by Karhunen-Loeve expansion. Simple ID problem was solved by the developed method, and its validity as well as the characteristic results by different stochastic methods were clarified.

  • The effect of characteristics of ground and circular foundation on the dynamic behavior of the foundation in vertical motion are considered using an approximated analytical solution and a finite element analysis with absorbing (consistent transmitting) boundary. The shear wave velocity of homogeneous ground affects the resonant frequency of the foundation much but has nothing to do with the maximum response amplitude at resonant frequency. The density in this case affects both the resonant frequency and the maximum response. The size and the mass of the circular foundation are related both to the resonant frequency and the maximum response. However, Poisson's ratio has very little effect on dynamic behavior of the foundation. When the ground is not homogeneous but has the layers, different formations of shear wave velocities would also change the maximum response at resonant frequency.

  • The design values of rock socketed pile related with properties of rock mass are not clearly established. However, the drilled shafts socketed in rock are widely used as the foundation of large scaled structure. In this study, the characteristics of behavior of rock socketed pile is researched, and the properties of interface between pile and rock considering soil-structure interaction are evaluated for numerical modeling of rock socketed pile based on the previous researches. Based on the properties of interface and rock mass, the behaviors of rock socketed piles are numerically modeled and compared with field measurement. To verify the numerical analysis, a micro pile socketed in rock is modeled and the results of numerical analysis are compared with field measurement. The numerical results show a good agreement with field measured data, especially in terms of load transfer characteristics.
