  • The in-situ resource utilization (ISRU) for sustainable lunar surface and deep space explorations has recently gained attention. Also, research on the development of construction material preparation technology using lunar regolith is in progress. Microwave sintering technology for construction material preparation does not require a binder and is energy efficient. This study applies microwave sintering technology to KLS-1, a Korean lunar simulant. It is crucial to secure the homogeneity to produce a sintered specimen for construction material. Therefore, understanding the interactions between microwaves, cavities, and raw materials is required. Using a numerical model in terms of efficient assessment of several cases and establishment of equipment operating conditions is a very efficient approach. Therefore, this study also proposes and verifies a coupled electric-thermal numerical model through cross-validation and comparison with experimental results. The numerical model proposed in this study will be used to present an efficient method for producing construction material using microwave sintering technology.

  • It is very Important to predict the damage zone of a rock mass induced by blasting for the excavation of an underground cavity such as a tunnel, as the damage zones incur mechanical and hydraulic instability of the rock mass potentially. Complicated blasting processes that can hinder the proper characterization of the damage zone can be effectively represented by two loading mechanisms. The first mechanism is the dynamic impulsive load-generating stress waves that radiate outwards immediately after detonation. This load creates a crushed annulus along with cracks around the blasthole. The second is the gas pressure that remains for an extended time after detonation. As the gas pressure reopens some arrested cracks and extends these, it contributes to the final structure of the damage zone induced by the blasting. This paper presents a simple method to evaluate the damage zone induced by gas pressure during rock blasting. The damage zone is characterized by analyzing crack propagations from the blasthole. To do this, a model of a blasthole with a number of radial cracks that are equal in length in a homogeneous infinite elastic plane is considered. In this model, crack propagation is simulated through the use of only two conditions: a crack propagation criterion and the mass conservation of the gas. The results show that the stress intensity factor of a crack decreases as the crack propagates from the blasthole, which determines the crack length. In addition, it was found that the blasthole pressure continues to decrease during crack propagation.

  • Most planting grounds have converted to the artificial ground of the upper part of underground parking lot in apartment complex recently by increasing utilization of underground parking area. This study has examined the composition of each ground and planting status. The study presents problems of planting plans in artificial ground landscaping in apartment complex. This study has conducted reference and field research. It has researched green space planning, planting characteristics and measures condition of soil depth in 3 regions surveyed. The results are listed below. First, hybrid ground has the highest percentage and natural soils has the lowest percentage in the composition of green space in apartment complex. Artificial green space is composed of a number of small-scale grounds. Second, The study has found that planting characteristics don't reflect soil properties. On the other hand, planting deep rooting big arbors has a high proportion in artificial Ground. Third, the study has figured out 98% of fit in minimum soil depth for growth. Fourth, planters and landscaping stones are constructed in case of small green space. On the other hand, mounding is constructed in case of large green space. However in case of mounding types it has low fit, so it needs to improve this problem.

  • Electromagnetic(EM) survey has been in use for over a half century as a standard routine for, mineral exploration in many parts of the world. But EM survey work and serious research effort were initiated in Korea only as late as in early 1980s, largely inspired by four pioneers who did their graduate studies in the U.S.A. in 1970s. Nevertheless domestic achievements in the field of EM survey are remarkable in the last two decades: the field operations and related interpretational skills appear to have reached a global standard, even compared with the most advanced in other countries, virtually in a whole spectrum of the method which includes magneto-tellurics(MT), Controlled Source Audio-frequency Magneto-tellurics(CSAMT), geomagnetic sounding, small loop survey systems, Very Low Frequency(VLF), Ground Penetrating Radar(GPR), time domain surveys, and noise analysis. Besides mineral exploration, EM survey has been applied in Korea to hydrogeology, geotechnical engineering, non-destructive investigation of structures, unexplored ordnance(UXO) investigation, environmental monitoring, and archaeological investigation as well. Now that original contributions of several Korean geophysicists are found even in new frontiers such as high-frequency EM survey, investigation in time-domain EM field for buried metal objects and structures, and also modem data inversion scheme, it is duly hoped that they make some technical breakthrough to unravel still entangled knots of EM survey method in a forseeable future.

  • Hollows are easily made and bearing capacity is lowered near underground structures of concrete pavement because of poor compaction and long term settlement of the ground. Distresses occur and lifespan is shortened because of larger stress induced by external loadings expected than that in the design. In this paper, the distresses of the concrete pavement slab over box culverts were investigated at the Korea Expressway Corporation(KEC) test road. The transverse cracking of the slabs over the culverts was compared between up and down lines with different soil cover depth. The box culvert without soil cover and concrete pavement were modeled and analyzed by the finite element method(FEM) to verify the transverse cracking at the test road. Wheel loading was applied after self weight of the pavement and temperature gradient of the concrete slab at Yeojoo, Gyeonggi where the test road is located were considered. Positions of maximum tensile stress and corresponding positions of the wheel loading were found for each loading combination. Joint position minimizing the maximum tensile stress was found and optimal slab length over the culverts with diverse size were suggested.

  • Seismic reflection data was obtained by using 28 and 100 Hz geophones at the ground subsidence sites in an old coal mine area. Frequency spectrum of the geophone analyzed with offset revealed that 1) In the near offset ($1\~10m$), the signals in the 100 Hz geophone data contains higher frequency components (up to 300 Hz) than that of the 28 Hz (<200 Hz), 2) In the intermediate offset ($11\~39m$), although the 28 Hz geophone data showed very similar frequency characteristics as the near offset data, the 100Hz geophone data seemed to be contaminated by noise at high frequency zone (>200 Hz). In the far offset ($\geq40\;m$), the signals in both the 28 and 100 Hz geophone data are attenuated to noise level at high frequency Bone more than 150 Hz.

  • A new rock excavation method using an abrasive waterjet system is under development for efficiently creating tunnels and underground spaces in urban areas. In addition, an appropriate abrasive flow rate and abrasive flow quality are important for the new rock excavation (cutting) method using an abrasive waterjet system. This study evaluated the factors influencing the abrasive flow rate and abrasive flow quality, specifically the abrasive pipe height, length, tortuosity and inner diameter, through experimental tests. Based on the experimental test results, this study suggested optimal conditions for the abrasive flow rate and abrasive flow quality. The experimental results can be effectively utilized as baseline data for rock excavation methods using an abrasive waterjet system in various construction locations such as tunnels near urban surroundings, utility tunnels, and shafts.

  • There is a growing need to apply TBM tunnelling method for the construction of underground facilities such as subways and utility tunnels in urban areas. Due to the variability and uncertainty of the ground, tunnelling in urban areas has various safety hazards which could cause damage to people and properties and it is very costly to recover from accidents. Therefore, it is very important to identify hazards from the planning and design phase and to establish risk mitigation measures. In this study, a total of 31 hazards affecting the stability of TBM tunnelling works in urban areas were listed from both the technical literature and correspondence with experts in tunnelling area. The importance and priorities of the hazards were analyzed by conducting Delphi technique, which is a decision-making method by consensus among experts. Finally, 12 hazards that satisfy the content validity criteria were settled and could be used as major control factors for accident prevention during TBM tunnelling works.

  • The NTR(New Tubular Roof) method was used to secure the stability of the tunnel and minimize the subsidence of the road. The tunnel was constructed at about 7.5 meters deep below the highway. with a width of about 21 meters. Following the NTR method, 13 steel pipes with a diameter of 2.3 meters were digged and pushed in longitudinally along the tunnel profile and cut out sides of pipes to connect to adjacent pipes, then filled the inside of pipes and the connected space between pipes with concrete to complete the lining of the tunnel to be excavated. As the steel pipes were digged in sequentially, the area of relaxation was connected to each other and behaves like a gradually widening tunnel. When the steel pipes were digged in to the widest points of the tunnel, the settlement rate of the road surface was increasing to the maximum as 2.2 mm and the total settlement until the lining construction was approximately 7.7 mm. After that, by excavating a tunnel inside the pre-installed lining, an additional settlement of about 4.3 mm was occurred, resulting in the total settlement of about 11.8 mm after completing of tunnel construction.
