  • To study the improvement of soft marine clay from southern coast of Korea under theelectroosmosis and electrophoresis conditions, several electrokinetic tests were carried out in electrokinetic(E/K) cell. In electroosmosis tests, various treatment times and current densities were used to investigate the strengthening effect under different conditions. From these tests results, it may be noted that electroosmotic strengthening of soft marine clay was effective in proportion to unit power consumption, current density and treatment time. However, electrophoresis method was not effective for thin soil.

  • Dynamic compaction is a ground improvement technique which is particularly effective for loose granular soils. It has also been used successfully to the cohesive soils with high void ratio, and wastes and fills. For the design of dynamic compaction method, prediction of depth of improvement is very important. The depth of improvement is influenced not only by compaction energy but also by many parameters such as grid spacing, soil property, degree of saturation and site conditions. Based on the test results, the depth of improvement were evaluated with considering compaction energy, soil type and ground water level.

  • In this study, an experimental study was carried out with variables of the shape of the ground soil-binder in order to find out whether the shear wave velocity and the ground grade were improved by the ground improvement. In this study, the shear wave velocity was measured using the crosshole method with variables of the shape of the ground soil-binder. In addition, the prediction formula of the shear wave velocity for suitability of N-Values for the domestic soil conditions are proposed using the result value of this study and the existing results of shear wave velocity. As a result, the shear wave velocity of the ground has increased. In addition, the prediction formula proposed in this study reasonably issued the existing experimental results regardless of the stratum conditions.

  • In this paper, a series of numerical analyses on soft clay ground improved by PVD were carried out, in order to investigate the consolidation promotion effect considering PVD width and surcharge pressure. In the numerical analyses, an elasto-viscoplastic three-dimensional consolidation finite element method was applied, in which the applicability of numerical analyses could be confirmed comparing with consolidation behavior simulated at the laboratory. And, through the results of the numerical analyses, consolidation behaviors of soft clay ground with elapsed time was elucidated, together with the effects of PVD width and surcharge pressure.

  • This study is to evaluate an application of technology to the soft ground stability using quick lime pile in the field. We investigated properties of Korean quick lime by conducting loading test and theoretical consideration about a principle and property of soft ground improvement by quicklime. According to the test results, it was estimated that quick lime pile method has dehydration effect by absorption of quick lime, consolidation effect by swelling of pile, increasing bearing by strength of pile itself and decreasing sinking effect, etc. A material property of quick lime is favorable for construction and considerable strength. In the case of higher strength is required, using cement as additive would increase material strength.

  • In this study, Nano-geosynthetics with electroosmosis method was used and tried to verify the possibility of usage for soft ground improvement. Electroosmosis tests were performed with increasing the voltage level and changing distance between electrodes. The electrokinetic cell was assembled and a Nano-geosynthetics was inserted into the plastic drain board. And electroosmosis was applied to the disturbed kaolin clay. In order to study the effects of ground improvement, ground settlement, water content, collected pore water and shear strength were compared and analyzed with non-applied kaolin clay. Also, the electroosmosis tests were performed with changing the distance between electrodes and the voltage size. As a results of changing the distance and voltage between electrodes, the more voltage size was increased, the more the settlement of ground, shear strength and collected pore water were increased. As the distance between electrodes were increased, the settlement of ground, shear strength, water content and collected pore water were decreased. Finally, Nano-geosynthetics as a material of electrode have the sufficient potential to improve soft ground.

  • Soft foundation is extensively distributed in coastal areas including our local regions. Embankment load on such soft foundation causes displacement due to lack of base ground supports. Long-term consolidation can result in settlement and destruction of shear failure and structure. Therefore, a variety of vertical drain methods are applied to construction sites to prevent base from breaking and changing for secure construction. This study analyzed the patterns of changes displacement to determine efficient range of improvement since range of vertical drain material determines vertical and horizontal changes based on the width range of under ground improvement. Changes of intensity with distance from embankment edge were also analyzed in the field study of embankment slope.

  • The aim of this study is to analyze the mechanical characteristics and settlement feature of the composite ground with structural form changes. The laboratory model test is a soil tanker to be contained with clay and grid form improved soil, which is conducted in total 9 case with the uniaxial compressive strength of improved soil and replacement ratio of improved soil. The numerical analysis for variation of stress distribution ratio with depth was performed in the same conditions which are the laboratory model test. As a result, stress distribution ratios in mid and high replacement ratio are increasing and settlement is decreasing, except low replacement ratio. This study is presented for form effect ratio and settlement reduction factor with change of structure form, which is able to be helpful in further research and reference for change of structural forms at composite ground.
