  • In this study, to quantitatively evaluate the strength characteristics of the inflatable liquid used for the recovery of soft ground or partial settlement, the inflatable liquids were prepared by dividing the inflatable capacity and the strength characteristics were analyzed according to the conditions. The experimental group was divided into two groups: relatively high expansion group and low expansion group. The specimens were prepared by controlling the volume of 10 ~ 30% of the maximum expansion volume, and the strength of the specimens were evaluated. The compressive strength of the high expansion group and low expansion group was about 2.1 times.

  • In this study, laboratory test was carried out on uniaxial compressive strength by making 320 specimens in total, which were divided into two groups considering the curing time of 7 and 28 days for 80 cases mixed with stabilizers of 8%, 10%, 12%, 14% of 20 cases of clayey, sandy, and gravel mixed ground conditions to understand laboratory strength characteristics of deep mixing specimen for field application in various ground conditions. As a laboratory result, all specimen showed a clear tendency to have uniaxial compressive strength increase as the curing time and the stabilizer mixing ratio increased, and the strength increments depending on the age by ground types were, around 40.0% for clayey and gravel mixed grounds, 48.4% for sandy grounds which was the highest, and for the increment of stabilizers, around 37.0% for grounds with mixing ratio less then 14%, and 49.6% when the ratio was 14% which was the highest. Also, with sandy grounds, it showed a tendency to have a constant amount of strength increment as the stabilizer mixing ratio increased, for clayey mixed grounds, the strength increment tendency seemed to be similar to gravel mixed grounds. Due to these tendencies, it is concluded that we are able to propose a stabilizer mixing ratio for various ground conditions.

  • Examined a practical use possibility of paper fly ash that is industrial by-product as a stabilization/hardening agent. Performed unconfined compression test, scanning electron microscopy and pH analysis etc. for 100% paper fly ash-soil mixtures and each paper fly ash-soil mixtures that add cement as the second addition and sulfate component of small quantity for strength promotion and so on. In all cases, strength of admixtures increased according as curing time and mixing ratio increases but almost strength is revealed at mixing early and expressed maximum strength increase efficiency at mixing ratio 9% with raw soil. Compare with the case that use paper fly ash only, in case of cement amount 10~30% was included in paper fly ash, strength of admixtures increases two times and 40% was included, that increases from five to eight times.

  • This is a study about how the increase of strength is changed when ground improvement material is mixed with either coastal clay or sandy soil. The ground improvement material was made from mixing a certain proportion of the slag which is by-products generated by smelting the iron ore and the paper fly ash which is formed by bumping up the paper. The ground improvement material was added to coastal soil and sandy soil each. And then according to ratio of water contents, number of curing days and ratio of mixture, specimen for uniaxial compression test was made. The change of uniaxial compression strength and the generated substances was analyzed while the specimen is being cured for 28days. The result of analysis shows that the strength of coastal clay was increased about eleven times more than that of sandy soil. This means that ettringite reaction by ground improvement material becomes more distinctive in the coastal clay than in the sandy soil.

  • The result of an investigation conducted to study the effect of crude oil contamination on the geotechnical properties of sand is presented. The effect of the degree of oil contamination on compaction charateristics, shear strength, and one-dimensional compression charateristics has been investigated. The test results indicate that the compaction charateristics are somewhat influenced by oil contamination The angle friction of sand (based on total stress basis) decreases due to the presence of oil within the pore spaces in sand. The compression charateristics of sand are significantly influenced by oil contamination. The details of the tests conducted and the results are presented in the paper.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of bearing capacity of pre-bored super strength PHC (SSPHC) piles socketed in rocks based on dynamic load test results. Because the SSPHC piles have high compressive concrete strengths compared with those of regular high strength PHC piles, the allowable structural strengths of the SSPHC piles were increased. For optimal design of the super strength PHC piles, the geotechnical bearing capacity of the SSPHC piles should also increased to balance the increased allowable structural strength of the SSPHC piles. Current practices of pile installation apply the same amount of driving energy on both SSPHC and high strength PHC piles. As results of analyzing factors that influence bearing strength of SSPHC piles using dynamic load test, there was no relationship between SPT-N value at pile toe and end bearing capacity. But driving energy effects on end bearing capacity. In case of skin friction, driving energy had no effects. And reasonable method verifying design bearing strength is necessary because end bearing capacity is not considered sufficiently in restrike test results.

  • In this study, we developed a micropile equipped with ground fixing wedge device which is able to ensure the bearing capacity early before grouting by expanding the tip and exerting the tip surface friction while compressing and expanding the tip of the micropile during loading. The purpose of this study is to verify the applicability of the developed micropile to the ground with various kinds of strength and to compare its characteristics with those of the simple tip expansion micropile. A new test system including a model soil box which can measure the tip resistance and the tip skin friction separately was devised. The loading test was carried out according to the changes of the ground strength and the tip cross section using the devised test systems. As a result of the test, it was found that the developed micropile increased the tip skin friction due to the wedge horizontal force as the soil strength increased and could be applied more effectively to the ground with the strength not lower than the strength of the weathered rock. In addition, it was found that additional bearing capacity could be obtained due to the tip cross section expansion and the wedge horizontal force exertion even in the ground with the strength below the weathered rock strength.

  • Recently, the ground injection method using water glasses as one of the main resources and the products of these constructions have basic problems in terms of the method of constructions for the permanent foundation reinforcement and stopping leakage of water because they have some serious problems such as durability, compressive strength, injectant eluviation and so forth even though they are still used to stop leakage of water in the temporary structures. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the strength characteristic and environment friendliness of NDS method by unconfined compressive strenth test, permeability test, length change test, leaching test, and assessment of environmental impact in comparison water glass type material. The test results show that NDS method has significant improvement of strength, permeability, volume change, and leaching. An assessment of environmental impact also demonstrates that the NDS material is environmentally friendly.

  • This paper presents the results of a study that was performed to evaluate fronds of shear strength parameters in stabilization of unbound soil-aggregate systems based on the theory of unsaturated soil mechanics. Two important shear strength parameters, effective cohesion and effective angle of internal friction were estimated by the proposed approach using the results from suction measurements and unconfined compressive strength test. In addition, the effect of different addition rates of stabilizing agent was compared. Due to the stabilization process, an increase in suction potential on engineering properties of geomaterials was observed by using dielectric constant measurements. In conclusion, the results from this study show that the proposed approach can be simply used for predicting shear strength parameters of the stabilized geomaterials.
