  • This paper suggests to bring the idea of social construction of nature or social nature discussed in social science including geography to geographical and environmental education for breaking traditional divide of people(or society) and nature. And this paper analyzed relationship between people and nature, meaning of environment and the concepts of social nature represented in the geography curriculum and textbook of England, Australia and Korea. Recently in terms of focusing disciplines or education on integration or convergence, introduction of social nature in teaching and learning geography and environment has an important implication. With rapid growth of capitalism, nature is constructed socially by the political, economical, social and cultural practice. Thus geography education reduces the distance between human geography and physical geography and needs to focus on exploring not just the relationship between people and nature but social construction of nature. Another implication of the introduction of social nature in teaching and learning geography and environment is that students can develop the relational sensitivity about the relationship people and nature or people and place.

  • This paper aims to illuminate how the Naturalists' concern on geography and geography education, mainly in Comenius, Rousseau, Pestalozzi who have played key roles in the development of Naturalism, has developed and how the Naturalism has influenced on the development of geography and geography education. Starting from sensual realism, the Naturalism suggested the educational principle and methods adjusting to the Nature well as exercised great influence on the formation of modem school education toward popular common education. The geography took the firm position as subject in the curriculum of the Naturalists and achieved the rationale of existence as subject in curriculum with utility to expand human experience, thanks to Naturalists. The Naturalists developed several ideas on geography teaching method such as labouring activity-centered geography teaching based on strengthening sense and experience by 'look-and-see' approach, local geography-centered geography teaching with stress the local area as the focus of direct experience and living environment, and the real thing-centered geography teaching by fieldwork. Moreover, The Naturalists had an great effect on the geographer, Karl Ritter in terms of methodology of geography.

  • Among the changes of the Curriculum from the liberation to the present, the biggest change in the highschool geography course appeared during the period from the Period of Syllabus to the 1st National Curriculum. More specifically, during the 1st National Curriculum the highschool geography course which previously had three subjects, 'Natural Environment and Human Lives', 'Human Geography', 'Economic Geography' was reduced to one subject, 'Human Geography.' In addition, while some contents related with astronomy, geology, and biology had been contained in the physiography course, they were left out from the human geography course of the 1st National Curriculum. This reduction of the geography course was related to the context that earth science was newly established in the 1st National Curriculum. Originally the draft plan released in June, 1953, which was 10 months before the formal time allotment criteria list had been made public, contained 'Physical Geography' instead of 'Earth Science'. What is sorry is that the name of 'Physical Geography' did not remain and was changed to 'Earth Science'. The underlying causes of the crisis the geography education is now facing are the reduction of Physical Geography and the emergence of 'Earth Science' during the 1st National Curriculum. To overcome the present crisis, the subject of geography should be changed more meaningful one based on the comprehensive perspective and academic product that geography has accumulated.

  • In this paper, we describe two exploratory examples in the use of Augmented Reality (AR) for geographical visualization regarding refinement of visual content in geography textbooks and learning motivation of geography students. Currently, teaching and learning materials with AR technology and their utilization in the geography classroom have become a new topic in geographical research themes, and this trend has increased. Adequate development and utilization of geographical materials is an important starting point for smart education research in geography. This paper describes the system and software, and the implication of marker AR applications for teaching and learning geography in the classroom. For the AR applications to be utilized in geography education, two marker based AR examples, virtual globe and visualization of topographical features, are presented and their utilization aspects are discussed. Finally, from the discussion stated in this paper, it can be inferred that AR is useful for exploring geographical materials, and marker based AR will contribute to progress in spatial science and geographical education research.

  • The purpose of this research is to explore the possibility of geographic education by implementing the map-based geographic education site which mashed up with Google earth by referring the various materials of geographic education which exist in on-line and off-line. In recent years map-based geographic education is required by the radical change of geoweb environments, but there have been few researches in this field. This research is folded up as follows: First, we designed the contents through the textbook analysis and then collect various data related to the contents such as pictures, video clips, conceptual map, etc. which are required to explain the concept. Second, we mashed up the collected data on the Google earth by using the Google's open API. Third, we implemented the geographic education website based on the classification of contents in textbook and the various collected data. This research is important in both that it explores the possibility of the map-based education rather than the text-based education in the geographic field which handles mainly the space and finds the best method to express the various concepts of the textbook on the geoweb environments.

  • For the Unification of Koreas in the future, we need to understand the geography education system of North Korea. This paper deals with the middle-school geography textbooks of North Korea, published in 2000 and as well as in 1990, in order to look for a better way of geography education after the Unification. One geography textbook is used for each grade, respectively, from the first to the fifth grade of the North Korea's middle-school (table 1). The North Korea's geography textbooks are immersed in the unreasonable idolization of the Kim's family and the excessive devotion to the socialist system. But they may suggest a significant implication in the improvement of geography terminology in South Korea because of their common use of genuine Korean words.

  • Geography has played a role of serving as a bridge between the natural and social sciences for long time and can be an interdisciplinary framework. In this research, the effectiveness of an interdisciplinary approach centering on a geographical perspective in environmental education is presented. On this basis, a syllabus for seven 90-minute classes for the 8th grade is established under the topic of "Studying the Environment of Eighteenmile Creek." This interdisciplinary framework will be strengthened and vitalized through GIS, which plays an important role to make the geographic and environmental education more student-centered, active, and relevant to the world where we now live.
