대한지리학회는 1845년 이래 우리나라 지리학도들의 학술활동의 중심예로 꾸준한 발전을 거듭하엿다. 이제 어언 30주년을 맞게되어 지금까지의 학회내외활동을 돌이켜 보고 현재 우리가 서 있는 좌표를 재확인함으로써 새로운 계획을 세운다는 것은 뜻있는 일이다.

The purpose of this paper is to examine trends of the GIS education in the school's education of the USA, especially the geography education, which the application of GIS is activated in the life. In addition, in this paper are explored possibilities of GIS education in the geographical education of Korea throughout the consideration of the USA case. There are some backgrounds of the activation of GIS education in the USA, They can be characterized as (1) the achievement of the validity between the geographical importance in the realm of the national policy and GIS education, (2) offering standard indications for GIS education and gradually minimizing school teachers' work-loads, (3)the establishment of the network of GIS stake-holders and their cooperation, (4) the attraction of school students through case study-centered education, and (5) the share of GIS education-related information. These shall be considered to introduce actively GIS education into the geography education in Korea.

Geography textbooks often have treated the world as a collection of independent nations. Also, many scholars have warned of ethnocentric bias in geography textbooks. Global education that emphasizes world interdependence and pursues global perspectives offers some possibilities to go beyond the status quo of current World Geography textbooks. The primary objective of this study is to analyze current US World Geography textbooks in terms of global education. A secondary objective is to explore a framework for rereading World Geography textbooks critically. This interpretive qualitative case study indicates that US World Geography textbooks maintain an imperialist and American-centered perspective. Especially, the case of Korea shows that other places and people are underrepresented through dichotomy, negative attitude and exclusion, misconception and stereotyping, and simplification in textbooks. Therefore, we need to detect conscious and unconscious fallacy and bias, to understand the world view and experiences of underrepresented people, and to deal with controversial global issues from diverse perspectives through global perspectives and post-colonial perspectives of global education.

중앙정부나 지자체를 중심으로 지리정보체계(GIS)구축사업이 광범위하게 추진되고 있는 지금, 지리정보구축에 소요되는 비용에 대한 부담으로 인해 각 기관들에 산재된 지리정보의 공동 활용이 매우 중요시 되고 있다. 이에 따라 지리정보 생산 및 관리의 효율성과 이용의 활성화를 도모하기 위하여 '지리정보목록의작성및관리에관한지침'이 2002년 제정되어 시행되고 있다 현재 국가지리정보유통망에서의 활용을 위해 유통용 메타데이터 표준이 제정되어 있지만, 지리정보관리기관의 효율적인 지리정보 관리를 위해서는 부족한 부분이 많은 실정이다. 본 연구에서는 동 지침에 의거하여 ISO 19115에 부합되는 새로운 통합 국가메타데이터 표준(안) 개발을 목적으로 메타데이터 표준화 연구를 수행하였다. 국가메타데이터 표준(안)은 유통용 메타데이터 표준을 모두 수용하고, 기존 메타데이터와의 비교분석을 바탕으로 효율적인 지리정보 관리를 위한 관리용 메타데이터 항목을 추가하여 총 13개 섹션으로 설계되었다. 본 연구에서 제시된 국가메타데이터 표준(안)을 통해서 우선 사용목적에 맞는 다양한 지리정보를 검색하고 활용하기 위한 표준화된 기반이 구축되어 공공부문 및 민간부문의 GIS 활성화를 위한 커다란 초석이 마련될 것으로 판단된다.
