  • This study carefully selected weather and plantation-related records from Sinjeung "Donggukyeojiseungram"("新增東國輿地勝覽") and "Taekliji"("擇里志") and examined their climate and vegetational significance as research ancient Korean documents. Both documents include several counts of detailed descriptions of and the interest in the natural environment and ecology shown by the residents of the region in the 14th and 15th centuries and the 18th century. Utilizing these records is believe to understand and restore the meteorological environment, regional climate characteristics, climate in mountainous regions, temperature and precipitative distribution, and vegetation of the south coastal region and the southern, central and northern regions of those times. Such prospect, this author hopes, will spark specific discussion of research methodology of ecological landscape and physical geography based on ancient Korean documents.

  • The purpose of this research is to propose a model for education for sustainable development (ESD) within the geography curriculum. The study consists of two parts. The first part discusses the normal view of a model to assess the curriculum, namely the content and the cognitive dimensions. The ESD component necessitates an action program with skills and citizenship considered as the Objective Dimension. The second part of the paper examines the means for adding the Objective Dimension which follows a taking action approach through knowledge, skills, and citizenship that are consistent with ESD goals. The research procedure applied the methodology of the Delphi process. The theoretical model was initially developed by the researchers based on current practices in geography assessment in South Korea and the U.S. The model was tested using the Delphi technique by high school geography teachers and geography education faculty members in both countries who were recognized experts in their field. The research complements the curriculum and instructional activities that have been under way with the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (UNDESD). The model may be used to deliberate proposals for building an ESD component into existing assessment practices.

  • Recently more emphasis thinking is domain-specific by cognitive psychologists, because problem solving needs domain-specific knowledge. Improving students' geographical thinking should ensure that geographic skills are used when developing teaching-leaming objectives. Knowledge is undoubtedly important, but for the purpose of the teaching of geography thinking, skills are critical. The purpose of this paper is to make specification of geographic skills as a frame of reference for instructional objectives. Based on cognitive psychology, this paper examined the interdependence relationship between thinking and knowledge. Next, we attempt to conceptualize high order geographical thinking and relatively lower order geographic skills and to explore specification of geographic skills in complex thinking strategical perspectives.

  • This study is to analyse Korean map inserted in the "Gwandong Gwanseo-jido(關東 關西地圖)" which is reserved in the Gyujanggak Archives as the mother edition of Korean Map("朝鮮圖") in Kangxi Atlas made in Qing dynasty. Map in Gyujanggak is very similar to the Korean map in the Kangxi atlas in terms of shape of southern part of Korean peninsula, boundary of provinces. Especially over 80% of place names on two maps are coincident and over 90% of islands names are identical. It is revealed that map in the Gyujanggak Archive is the most similar map to the Kangxi Atlas in Korea. This map was produced in 1729~1736 which is late compared to the Kangxi Atlas. This difference of production period shows that mother editon of map in Gyujanggak is the base map of Korean Map in Kangxi atlas. The similarity and differences between those maps show the process of edition of geography in the produce the Kangxi atlas. And map in Gyujanggak shows that production of new type of Korean whole map was began in the late $17^{th}$ century.

  • The academic values of Joseon jiji jaryo (Geographical Documents of Joseon) are that native Korean toponyms corresponding with toponyms in Sino-Korean characters (hanzi 漢字) are abundantly recorded nationwide. Through analysing these documents, it is able to examine the linguistic features of toponymic changes while reasoning about geographical named sources and administrative districts as well as obtaining primary data. This article aims to preliminarily analyze these documents for encouraging academic studies which haven't been investigated sufficiently since they was introduced into the academic world. Noticing the toponymic values of these documents, I reexamined the bibliography and composing contents centering around the volume of Chungcheongbuk-do province in these documents. Consequently, I pointed out the possibility of regional differences of compilation times and mistakes in the contents of these documents. In addition to that, I proposed the toponymic values, referring to the transcription changes of village toponyms and the tendencies of loan transcription.

  • This study analyzed the ignorance and prejudice with regard to African culture, which can be seen at the textbook and class course centering the geography class from 1990's to the present, and reviewed critically the related education and learning effects for mutual understanding. This study results are as follows: First, in the geographic environment contents, the image regarding huge continent, the local image regarding the various physical environments and the geographical importance as the ancient civilization birthplace were not included in the description. Second, the description regarding the African culture and history was focused to the singular African image, so the fixed concept and distorted image has been rooted into the formation of cultural meta-knowledge. Third, the negative sides rather than positive development and the past backward facts rather than changed status have been emphasized in the description regarding African resources and industry as well, so only the region surrounded with the various problems including poverty and the image as underdeveloped country have been rooted into the description. Now, real Africa view, an image for a variety of attractive and vibrant Africa rather than the same culture and characteristics of African must be learned in text books.

  • Books on world geography, so called "萬國地誌" had an important influence on changing Koreans' views of the world and the nation through the introduction of new world geographical knowledge during the period of modern enlightenment(1894~1910). "小學萬國地誌" was published in 1895 by Hakbu as an early world geography textbook. This study sought to discuss the significance and influence of "小學萬國地誌" by focusing on its contents organization and description style. The findings are as follows. The six regional contents organization adopted the modern regional geographical method by regional scale classification, describing the human geography based on the physical geography, comparing regional characteristics or studying the relationship between human and the nature. In addition, this textbook was written using the kukhanmun style that displays several characteristics of modern printing culture. Many geographical names were written in Korean characters and geographical knowledge was accepted actively from the modern world, subsequently contributing to the generalization of geographical knowledge. This textbook led to the transition of the Koreans' worldview from a China-centric focus by providing practical and specific knowledge about the world, toward the Korean modernization based on the multiple ideologies of social Darwinism and the advent of enlightenment, imperialism and nationalism.

  • The curriculum of integrated social studies is not conceptually established, but various forms pursuing so-called perfect integrated subject have appeared from elementary school to high school. But we cannot find out desirable integration in the elementary school though the apparent goal is to integrate all kinds of social concepts into one unit. The current method of integration has some problems over advantages people initially expected by integration. It is problematic in that students learn fragmental knowledges of geography without capturing the whole geographical concept structure or obtaining their own geographical viewpoint. Therefore, we purpose to reinterpret integration of social studies and reorganize the current textbook into the right direction under the assumption that simple mixture of knowledges is far from our goal of true integration. For this purpose, we suggest a new method for social studies as an integrated subject. Instead of providing knowledges unrelated to each other into one bundle, it helps students to see the real world in his own knowledge framework equipped with geographical viewpoint. The text we claim will show students that geography consists of three key concepts: physical environment, man and environment, and spatial structure. With this text, they will have an easy access to the relationships between key concepts and details, and between geographical concepts and similar concepts from other disciplines. The proposal contributes to both upcoming textbook development and classroom teaching by eliminating problems in the current social studies teaching.
