  • This paper aims to compare and analyze the undergraduate geography curriculums of Korean and American universities. is rarely offered as an undergraduate geography subject in both Korean and American universities. This may be due to the fact that the four fields of geography(human geography field, physical geography field, regional geography field, and other geography field) are not easily able to be integrated and taught as an independent geography subject. The ratio of the subject number of human geography field(39.4%) is greater than that of physical geography field(24.5%) at the geography departments of Korean universities, but the ratio of the subject number of physical geography field(32.8%) is a little more greater than that of human geography field(29.4%) at the geography departments of American universities. The ratio of the subject number of regional geography fields at the geography department of American universities(18.1%) is greater than that of Korean universities(13.8%), so more stress seems to be laid on the field of regional geography in American universities than in Korean universities. Although the geography curriculums of Korean universities seems to follow generally those of American universities, this paper reveals that there is also differences between the geography curriculums of Korean and American universities in terms of their emphasis on four fields of geography. The differences could be explained by the historical context of the geography departments of Korean universities during the last half a century.

  • The main purpose of this paper is to explore the paradigm shifts of landscape studies in Anglophone cultural and historical geography. By analyzing the work of the Berkley School in the 1950s and 1960s, the advance of humanistic geography in the 1970s, the revival of cultural geography in the 1980s ("new cultural geography"), and the recent development of non-representational geography, this paper demonstrates that the paradigms of landscape studies in Anglophone cultural and historical geography have been changed. By giving buoyancy to the concept of 'Affect'-a kind of 'spatio-bodily-magnetic relation'-as an essence of non-representational geography, I provide an easy way for understanding the implications of non-representational geography. In addition to this, re-conceptualising Non-Representational Theory (NRT) based non-representational geography as 'Kyung-Chi Jirihak' in Korean lexicon context, it is suggested that what the directions of landscape studies of cultural and historical geography of Korea should be and how it can be set up in the paradigm shifts.

  • Although the Dept. of Geography in Korea has contributed to the social development of Korea with a remarkable growth for a short period, their social status and influence have not greatly improved and the graduates in Geography do not have many job opportunities. The low social statue and the limited job opportunities of the Dept. of Geography in Korea was due to the failure of the creation of their demand and the expansion of their sphere in response to the social changes and developments of Korea. In France, the Dept. of Geography has raised their social standings through the suited curriculum system to generate their demand and enlarge their domain with the social changes and development of French. The Dept. of Geography in Korea also needs not only the expansion of sphere but the building of the proper curriculum system for the creation of demand.

  • The aim of this study is to examine the changes of approach methods of research framework in the history of Korean economic geography during the last fifty years($1956{\sim}2005$). The five factors that have influenced Korean economic geography are Korean geography, European, American, and Japanese geography, fundamental theories of economics and business administration, regional problems, and culture. The study of Korean economic geography can be divided into four periods: 'period of cradle of economic geography($1956{\sim}1962$)', 'period of establishment of economic geography(1963$\sim$later 1970s)', 'period of leap of economic geography(the former half of 1980s$\sim$the former half of 1990s)', and 'period of transition of economic geography (since later 1990s)'. And research framework of Korean economic geography has changed from the regional structure theory in 'period of leap' to the spatial system of economies and network theory in 'period of transition'. Spatial system of economies and network theory consists of spatial system of world economies, spatial system of national economies, spatial system of regional economies, spatial network of enterprise economies, and spatial network of information economies.

  • Since the 1980s, the academic interests on the regional geography have been renewed. This trend is usually called 'Renaissance' of the regional geography. Given this context, to explore diverse theories and methodologies in the regional geography is of much significance. Particularly, to examine the regional geography in Germany widens the understanding of not only the history, strength, and weakness of the regional geography, but also the discipline's status in the field of geography. This paper discusses the regional geography in Germany before World War II, focusing on varieties of theories and methods as well as the historical trajectory of the German regional geography. This discussion may well be significant in that 'Laenderkunde' became an important paradigm in the discipline of geography in Germany during the pre-World War II period.

  • Military geography has been recognized a part of applied geography appeared in 1960s by the viewpoint applying geographical science technology and knowledge for war. But the contribution for war accompanying violence caused negative recognition in moral viewpoint and led stagnation of military geography's study. Therefore this paper has researched a method improving the role of military geography as a part of applied geography and considered the essential meaning of the military geography's role in the relationship between war and military sciences. Based on this consideration, this paper proposed a research direction necessary for the role contributing human development beyond the viewpoint focusing contribution for war. The result of this study confirmed the characters of the military geography's elements have two attributes contributing for war victory or improving human life quality. Military geography has laid emphasis for usability to war contribution until now and caused unsatisfactoriness of morality. But military geography can complement this unsatisfactoriness by the extension of the role contributing human life quality. This study could examine the possibility doing the role contributing for both war and peace as a intact science.
