  • This study explored the mediating effects of positive psychological capital on the relationship between academic grit and academic burnout perceived by high school students. This study was conducted through questionnaires of 573 second graders of high school in Daegu and analyzed by descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, structural equation modelling. The results of this study were as follows. First, academic grit had a negative effect on academic burnout. Second, positive psychological capital mediated the relationship between academic grit and academic burnout. This result implies that it is necessary to provide positive psychological capital to enhance or maintain academical grit in the context of academic burnout. In the subsequent study, it is needed to explore the mediating effects of positive psychological capital on sub-variables, the moderating effect of positive psychological capital profiles, the analysis of variance according to individual backgrounds such as gender and grade for academic grit and academic burnout, and the mediating or moderating effects of positive psychological capital on independent variables such as perfectionism, ego-resilience, and self-efficacy.

  • Facial processing of different racial origin has been investigated at various levels including perceptual, emotional, and socio-cultural processing. Particularly, a good deal of studies have been conducted to show "other race effect (ORE)" to indicate that subtle facial information such as identity or emotional expressions are often under-processed in racial out-group members. However, few studies have investigated whether attentional modulation toward racial out-group faces could explain ORE. We investigated whether novelty-driven attentional mechanism is involved in face perception using event-related potential (ERP). Twenty-two Korean (KR) and nine Caucasian-American (AM) participants were presented with emotional faces from the two racial origins while they performed a gender categorization task. KRs showed significantly greater P3 amplitudes to AM than to KR faces indicating that the early attentional processing underlies differential perception of racial out-group faces. Interestingly, P3 was not up-regulated in the AM subjects when they were presented with KR faces, perhaps due to massive habituation to KR faces during everyday social interaction. These results indicate that racial out-group faces are highly salient stimuli which automatically occupy attentional resources, but easily habituated with repeated exposure to the racial-out group.

  • The purpose of this paper is to suggest a particular approach to geomorphology education based on an epistemology (anti-realist of geomorphology knowledge. Anti-realist epistemology of geomorphology may be characterized by the belief that (1) geomorphology knowledge is made or constructed rather than discovered, (2) knowledge construction begins with the perception of meaningfulness of the landform, and (3) it means recognizing the given land in terms of shape or form; (4) the construction is, in other words, a subjective or inter-subjective interpretation by the perceivers; (5) knowledge develops along with the hermeneutic circles. Aims of geomorphology education according to this epistemology, may be (1) to have children not so much construct geomorphology knowledge as live the very construction, (2) to have children maintain an enduring interest in their surrounding landform, and (3) to have them appreciate the intimate connections between the landform of a region and the modes of living in that region. In short, aims of geomorphology education may have to be ontological, i.c., to have children engaged in the understanding as a process of living rather than for the resulting knowledge.

  • Due to paradigm shift in administration, the field of police administration, like its civilian counterpart, is spending effort to improve customer-oriented civil complaint service system, and this is leading to a negative factor in service providers, emotional labor, among police officers. This study examines amount of emotional labor of maritime police officers, and verify the effects of emotional labor on exhaustion. Results show maritime police officers experience about the same amount of emotional labor as other public workers, and emotional labor has effects on work exhaustion. In other words, perception of incongruity of emotion has positive effects on exhaustion on cynical attitude. Attention to emotional expression has negative effects on decrease of job effectiveness. As such, if the problem of emotional labor is neglected, it leads to exhaustion and can become a significant obstacle to performance due to negative organizational influence. Also, it can lead to serious physical and mental problems on the individual level. Therefore, policy implementation to prevent this problem is necessary.

  • The purpose of this study is to find the concept of life, the categories of living things and the systems of categorizing them contained in Buddhism, a sort of metaphysical philosophy. For this, monks who devotes themselves to Buddhism were interviewed, and the differences of the definition of life, the categorizing of living creatures and categorizing systems between biology and other subject teachers and students who are Buddhist and ones who are not were inquired. The result shows that in Buddhism, they use 'being' and 'sentience being' as the terms for creatures and they believe creatures are not individual ones but one collective existence connected with each other, which is very different from the biological definition of creatures. Buddhist include metaphysical beings in categories of living things rather than plants. Buddhist criteria for categorizing things which have life, that is living beings, are how they are born, whether they have a certain form and, lastly, whether they are conscious or not. Through this research results we could expect to identify the misconceptions about concept of life and the categories of living things.

  • A German philosopher, Herbert Bolz predicted that the human way of thinking would be fundamentally and completely changed because of digital media and the 'Gutenberg-Galaxis', named by M.McLuhan which was symbolized of modern reason was doomed to be over. He thought that the limit of reason-centered European culture would be overcome by the up-to-date multimedia to revive the communication life. On this theory, he emphasized the emotional perception, 'aisthesis' which is original meaning of aesthetics. That is to say, he insisted on the restoration of communication media to enable the five senses' amusement condition mentioned by Kant. This thesis asserts that the representative hypermedia digital animation may play a key role to rehabilitate human sensibility pressed by reason centered modernism. Digital animation has the unique worth of Art that is firstly to deal with time and space and enable unlimited expressions and can communicate effectively as a characteristic synthetic medium which consists of intensive computer techniques. Based on the background, this thesis analyzes the possibility of the digital animation as a new medium. Especially, it is focused on the relations to the hypermedia theory of Norbert Bolz who is a media analyst and professor of a design college.

  • Neo-liberalism after IMF bailout made the Korean book market flushing with rose due to the alleged self-development books. Vision of self-development books under neoliberal social system is inevitably reduced to a means of capital pursuing commercialization in line with improving the competitiveness of privates through the development of human resources. Characteristics of self-development books, which attributes personal fail to personal responsibility and lack of essential element compared to others in a competitive society, trap individuals forced to choose into anxiety and helplessness. Self-development and healing is a complementary relationship. Human beings needs healing -healing humanities- in the process of self-development. Therefore, humanities should trigger developing and perceiving his own 'reflexive life skills'. Individual's sense of happiness in life and his own experience is very important, and the conscious relationship about their own feelings could elicit 'self-reinforcement'.

  • The 21 Century is definded as an age of culture or image characterized by the fact, that modern society are being overwhelmed with virtual reality, that is full of visual images. The cultural concentration on the visual image and the excessive tendency to attend it become not only today but also ever as the leading style of culture. Nevertheless, it is particularly noteworthy that the visual image has become so one of the basic conditions of modern society, that one holds it as the society of the spectacle. So can the problem of seeing that resulted from the oculocentric culture, that is the problem of the fundamental relationship between the world and the eyes of human beings, be examined in the phenomenological sense. For this study, I believe that 『Phenomenologie de la Perception』 of Merleau-Ponty provides a important approach. The theme of this study is to refer, first, how man has dealt with the seeing in the history of philosophy, such as Plato, Kant, and Merleau-Ponty, who although not the anti-oculocentricism, but also makes serious reflection about an excess of visual images. Second, it is to explain what characteristics and problems are located in these considerations, and thirdly, it must be brought into the light, what is the essence of the seeing with regard to the beauty, the truth and the morality.

  • Unlike the traditional bricks-and-mortar marketplace, the online environment includes several distinct factors that influence Web site trust. As consumers become more savvy about the Internet, the author contends they will insist on doing business with web companies they trust. This study examines 1) how Web site trust is affected by the following web purchase-related factors: security, privacy, brand name, word-of-mouth, good online experience, and quality of information, and 2) how it influences outcomes. Unlike Urban and colleagues' study (2000), the author argues that not all e-trust bUilding programs guarantee success in building Web site trust. In addition to the mechanism depending on a program, building e-brand trust requires a systematic relationship between a consumer and a particular web site. The findings show that Web site trust does not build one or two components but are established by the interrelationships of complex components. By carefully investigating these variables in formulating marketing strategies, marketers can cultivate brand loyalty and gain a formidable competitive edge.
