The chemical composition of the continental crust play an important role in understanding of crustal formation and evolution and quantifying other processes taking place within continental crust. We summarized geochemical data reported in the previous literature for the crustal rocks in the Korean Peninsula and divided their chemical composition into geologic time scale. In the variation diagram normalized by average composition of the upper crustal rocks, the geochemical characteristics of the upper crust during Triassic period is different from those of the upper crustal rocks after Jurassic period or before Precambrian. However, the geochemical characteristics of the Jurassic and Precambrian period are similar each other. Our summarized data indicate that the source material of Triassic upper crust may be different from that of Jurassic or Precambrian upper crust.
La-Ce method is one of new geochronological methods developed recently. La and Ce are one of the rare earth elements, and, with Sm-Nd system. La-Ce system is very useful in understanding the evolution processes of crust and mantle. In this paper, I introduce the basic concept of the La-Ce method, and apply it in clarifying LREE pattern of source material of leuco-granitic gneisses from the Imweon area, Kangwon-do, and K-rich granite from the Anshan area in Liaoning Province, NE China. Sm-Nd data on the Anshan K-rich granites give an age of $3.16{\pm}0.06$ Ga($2{\sigma}$), with initial $^{143}Nd/^{144}Nd$=$0.50846{\pm}0.00005$ (${\epsilon}_{Nd}$=-1.5). On the basis of Ce and Nd isotopic ratio, leucogranitic gneiss and K-rich granite has been fractionated from the source material which had had similar to CHUR (chundritic uniform reservoir). And the initial ${\epsilon}_{Nd}$ value suggest that the crustal formation age of the Liaoning Province area, NE China was early Archean.
The Korean Peninsula consists of three Precambrian blocks: Nangrim, Gyeonggi and Yeongnam massifs. Here we revisited previous stratigraphic relationships, largely based on new geochronologic data, and investigated the crustal evolution history of the Precambrian massifs. The Precambrian strata have been usually divided into lower crystalline basements and upper supracrustal rocks. The former has been considered as Archean or Paleoproterozoic in age, whereas the latter as Paleoproterozoic or later. However, both are revealed as the Paleoproterozoic (2.3-1.8 Ga) strata as a whole, and Archean strata are very limited in the Korean Peninsula. These make the previous stratigraphic system wrong and require reconsideration. The oldest age of the basement rocks can be dated as old as Paleoarchean, suggested by the occurrence of ~3.6 Ga inherited zircon. However, most of crust-forming materials were extracted from mantle around ~2.7 Ga, and produced major portions of crust materials at ~2.5 Ga, which make each massif a discrete continental mass. After that, all the massifs belonged to continental margin orogen during the Paleoproterozoic time, and experienced repeated intracrustal differentiation. After the final cratonization occurring at ~1.9-1.8 Ga, they were stabilized as continental platforms. The Nangrim and Gyeonggi massif included local sedimentary deposition as well as igneous activity during Meso-to Neoproterozoic, but the Yeongnam massif remained stable before the development of Paleozoic basin.
Intruding ages for the Jurassic(${\sim}Triassic$) granites in South Korea can be reestablished as $210{\sim}170\;Ma$ and $180{\sim}160\;Ma$ according to the tectonic provinces of magma emplacement. Most Jurassic granites in the Gyeonggi massif have the intrusion ages of $180{\sim}160\;Ma$, indicative of middle Jurassic igneous activity. On the other hand the intrusion ages ($210{\sim}170\;Ma$) for the Jurassic granites in the Yeongnam massif represent late Triassic to middle Jurassic igneous activity. Using the concept of granite suite/supersuite, the Jurassic granites in South Korea can be hierarchically divided into two supersuites and two suites. Huge batholith of NE-SW direction in the Gyeonggi massif could be designated to be 'Gyeonggi Supersuite', which was originated from the mixture of igneous protolith and more evoloved crustal materials and formed in the post-orogenic environment after collision of the north China and south China blocks. There are one supersuite and two suites in the Yeongnam massif 'Yeongnam Supersuite' could be designated from the NE-SW trend batholith in the massif. This supersuite was originated from the mixture of igneous protolith and evolved crustal materials. Granitic rocks between Andong and Girncheon areas could be defined as 'Andong Suite'. This suite was originated from the mixture of depleted mantle and igneous protolith. The Daegang and Hamchang granties could be designated as 'Daegang Suite'. This suite was formed in the anorogenic environment which was different from the orogenic environment of the other supersuite/suite in the Yeongnam massif.
Review of metamorphic terms and rock names from various published articles in Korea reveals that they have often been misused and they may lead to a faulty results in the interpretations of the geologic mass. Their usage can be classified into several groups. A few simple rules are proposed for use in naming metamorphic rocks. The new rock names make by the proposed rules are listed as table with old names.
The tectonic environment and source characteristics of the Daebo granitic batholith in the central Ogcheon Belt were investigated based upon major and trace element geochemistry. The batholith is comprised of three granite types; a biotite granite (DBBG), K-feldspar megacryst-bearing biotite granite (DBKG), and a more mafic granodiorite (DBGD). The variations of Na and K in the granites can not be explained by simple fractional crystallization from the same primary magma. The irregular behavior of these alkali elements indicates a variety of source materials or incomplete mixing of different source materials. The large ion lithophile (LIL) element enrichment and low Ta/Hf ratios of the granites are typical characteristics of normal, calc-alkaline continental arc granitoids. Based upon REE patterns of the granites, it seems to be unreasonable to regard the felsic DBBG as a late stage differentiate formed by residual melts after the fractionation of major constituent minerals of the more mafic DBGD. Inconsistent variations in ${\varepsilon}_{Nd}(t)$ and LIL element concentrations of the granites preclude a mixing model between primitive melt and LIL element-enriched upper crustal materials. The irregular geochemical variation of the granites is taken to be largely inherited from an already heterogeneous source region.
The Samyuri area of Jeoksang-myeon, Muju-gun at the Middle Yeongnam Massif consists of granitic gneiss, porphyroblastic gneiss and leucocratic gneiss, which correspond to Precambrian Wonnam Series. Here we discuss a geochemical implication of the data based on major element composition, trace element, rare earth element (REE), Sm-Nd and Rb-Sr isotope systematics of the boring cores in the granite gneiss area. The boring cores are granitic gneiss (including biotite gneiss) and amphibolite. The major and trace element compositions of granitic gneiss and amphibolite suggest that the protolith belongs to TTG (Tonalite-Trondhjemite-Granodiorite) and tholeiitic series, respectively. Chondrte-normalized REE patterns vary in LREE, HREE and Eu anomalies. The granitic gneiss and amphibolite have Sm-Nd whole rock age of $2,026{\pm}230(2{\sigma})$ Ma with an initial Nd isotopic ratio of $0.50979{\pm}0.00028(2{\sigma})$ (initial ${\epsilon}_{Nd}=-4.4$), which suggests that the source material was derived from old crustal material. Particularly, this initial ${\epsilon}$ Nd value belongs to the range of the geochemical evolution of Archean basement in North-China Craton, and also corresponds to the initial Nd isotope evolution line by Lee et al. (2005). In addition, chondrite-normalized REE pattern and initial Nd value of amphibolite are very similar to those of juvenile magma in crustal formation process.
Based upon the lead isotopic compositions of the galenas collected from Pb-Zn ore deposits distributed in the eastern and southern parts of the Gyeongsang basin, we investigated what kinds of source materials were involved in the formation of these ore deposits and compared the lead isotopic characteristics of these ore deposits with those of the ore deposits in the Taebaegsan area. The isotopic compositions of the common leads from Pb-Zn ore deposits in the Gyeongsang basin show the variation with the relatively limited range ($^{206}Pb/^{204}Pb=18.156{\sim}18.377$, $^{207}Pb/^{204}Pb=15.482{\sim}15.638$, and $^{208}Pb/^{204}Pb=37.953{\sim}38.605$). They are plotted on or below ore lead growth curve(Cumming & Richards, 1975) and average crustal lead evolution curve (Stacey & Kramer, 1975). In the plumbotectonic model IV(Zartman & Haines, 1988), they are plotted between the evolution curves of mantle and orogene. But the lead isotopic compositions of the common leads in the Taebaegsan area are plotted on and above upper crust curve. Considering the above-mentioned lead isotopic characteristics, the linear trend shown in the isotopic compositions of the common leads in the Gyeongsang basin can be considered as the mixing isochron between high radiogenic crustal materials such as the Ryongnam massif and low radiogenic materials derived from depleted mantle or materials with relatively low U/Pb and Th/U ratios.
Here we report major element composition, trace and rare earth element abundance, Sm-Nd and Rb-Sr isotopic composition from Deokgu leucogranite. Chondrite-normalized REE pattern and its Eu anomaly are divided into 3 types systematically, and have close relationship with $SiO_2$ contents. Such geochemical characteristic indicates that the leucogranite was derived by feldspar fractionation from a common source magma. Sm-Nd and Rb-Sr whole rock ages are $1,785{\pm}180Ma$ (initial $^{143}Nd/^{144}Nd\;ratio=0.51003{\pm}0.00016,\;2{\sigma}$; ${\varepsilon}_{Nd}(T)=-5.9$) and $1,735{\pm}260Ma$ (initial $^{87}Sr/^{86}Sr\;ratio=0.702{\pm}0.046,\;2{\sigma}$), respectively. Initial ${\varepsilon}_{Nd}$ value indicates that the magma should be derived from the crustal material. This initial ${\varepsilon}_{Nd}$ value also corresponds well with those from the Precambrian granitoids from North-China Craton rather than those of South-China Craton.
The metamorphic rocks of Yongin-Anseong area in Gyeonggi massif are composed of high-grade gneisses and schists which are considered as Precambrian basement, and Jurassic granite which intruded the metamorphic rocks. In this paper, we discuss the geochemical characteristics of metamorphic rocks and granites in this area based on REE and Nd isotope geochemistry. And we also discuss the petrogenetic relationship between metamorphic rocks and granites in this area. Most of Nd model ages (T$\_$DM/$\^$Nd/) from the metamorphic rocks range ca. 2.6Ga~2.9Ga which are correspond to the main crustal formation stage in Gyeonggi massif by Lee et. al. (2003). And Nd model ages show that the source material of quartzofeldspathic gneiss is slightly older than that of biotite banded gneiss. In chondrite-normalized rare earth element pattern, the range of (La/Yb)$\_$N/ value from biotite banded gneiss is 37~136, which shows sharp gradient and suggests that biotite banded gneiss was originated from a strongly fractionated source material. However, that of amphibolite is 4.65~6.64, which shows nearly flattened pattern. Particularly, the chondrite normalized REE patterns from the high-grade metamorphic rocks show the REE geochemisoy of original source material before metamorphism. In addition, the values of (La/Yb)$\_$N/ and Nd model ages of granite are 32~40 and 1.69Ga~2.08Ga, respectively, which suggest that the source material of granite is different from that of Precambrian basement such as biotite banded gneiss and quartzofeldspthic gneiss in the area.
