  • This study was performed to investigate the effectiveness of trigger point needling and oriental medical treatment to shoulder pain patients in stroke sequelae with three aspects of pain and range of motion, muscle strength. Trigger point needling was applied to 3 patients on supraspinatus, infraspinatus, deltoid, subscapularis muscle. For evaluating treatment, visual analog scale(VAS), passive range of motion(PROM), muscle strength evaluation(MSE) were checked. After treatment, VAS score of 1 cases were decreased. PROM of 1 case was improved and MSE of 2 cases were improved slightly. These results suggest that trigger point needling and oriental medical treatment were effective on shoulder pain patients in stroke sequelae and it is necessary to research more case with shoulder pain in stroke sequelae.

It was induced according to the 'Disease Pattern Identification Diagnostic System based on Shanghanlun Provisions' so that it suggest a potential interpretation, which is different with it of the text books Herbal Formula Science and Sanghallonjeonghae, on the provision no. 138. Also the usage of Sohamhyung-tang in this case may support the way far from the diagnosis of oriental neurological medicine, which explain the pathology of stroke as fire-heat(火熱), dampness-phlegm(濕痰), static blood(瘀血) and dual deficiency of qi and blood(氣血兩虛).

  • Aphasia is frequent in stroke patients and most patients with aphasia exhibit spontaneous progressive improvement in language abilities over time, but few recover completely. Neurological variables, especially initial severity of aphasia and time post-onset, appear to have influence on improvement. Effect of speech therapy and pharmacotherapy has been studied and some drugs, like amphetamine are proved to be benefit for recovery of aphasia following stroke. But there has been few evidence to facilitate recovery from aphasia by acupuncture or herbal medication therapy. So we report two cases of aphasic stroke patients who treated by combination therapy of acupuncture, herbal medication(Cheongsinhaeo-tang) and speech therapy over 6 months and improved in language abilities. Further clinical studies will be needed to explore the effects of acupuncture and herbal medication therapy for aphasia. Researchers should examine the long term effect of these treatment, and whether it is more effective than speech therapy and western pharmacotherapy or not..

In the relation between the anatomical lesion and recovery, there was no significant difference among real moxibustion group, sham moxibustion group and non moxibustion group. 3. In the relation between the initial state of urinary disturbance and recovery, the real moxibustion group showed significant recovery compared to sham moxibustion group and non moxibustion group in Gr 3 patients. 4.
