Removal rates of residual organic phosphorous pesticides (chlorpyrifos-methyl and fenitrothion) in Perilla leaves by various washing methods were determined. The removal rates using stagnant tap water were 20.05 and 17.70% for chlorpyrifos-methyl and fenitrothion, whereas 44.28 and 39.10% using flowing tap water, and 19.14 and 15.43% using activated carbon-added stagnant tap water, respectively. Activated carbon-added flowing stagnant tap water removed 25.29 and 15.43% of chlorpyrifos-methyl and fenitrothion, and removal rates were 53.51 and 50.62% with alkaline solution and 30.25 and 28.09% with acidic solution, respectively. With neutral detergent solution, removal rates were 81.52 and 76.56% for chlorpyrifos-methyl and fenitrothion, respectively. Results revealed washing method using neutral detergent solution was most effective for removing residual pesticides.
Electrode characteristics were studied in the interface between sample solutions and $K^+$ ion selective PVC membrane electrodes containing neutral carriers, dibenzo-18-crown-6(D18Cr6) and valinomycin(Val). The effect of doping of base electrolytes, the chemical structure and the content of carrier, variation of plasticizer, membrane thickness, and concentration variation of sample solution on the response characteristics of electrode such as the measured Nernstian slope, the detection limit, the linear response range, and potentiometric selectivity coefficients, were studied. In order to synthesize the membrane D18Cr6 and Val as neutral carriers were used, and complex between the carrier and $K^+$ ions were used as active materials. PVC membrane electrodes were made of plasticizers (DBP, DOS, and DBS), the base electrolyte[potassium tetraphenylborate(KTPB)], and solvent(THF). The chemical structure of carrier D18Cr6 was best for electrode and ideal electrode characteristics were appeared especially in case of doping of TPB. The optimum carrier content was about 3.23 wt % in case of D18Cr6 and Val. DBP was best as a plasticizer. As membrane thickness decreased the electrode characteristics was improved. But its characteristics were lowered below the optimum membrane thickness because of the elution of carrier, deterioration of membrane strength, etc. In the case of D18Cr6, the selectivity coefficients by the mixed solution method for the $K^+$ ion were in the order of $NH_4{^+}>Ca^{2+}>Mg^{2+}>Na^+$.
This study elucidated the biological activities and structural characteristics of polysaccharides isolated from ginseng leaves fermented using Cordyceps sinensis (GLF). GLF comprised at least 18 glycosyl linkages, including 4-linked glucose residues (24.0%). To characterize the neutral polysaccharides in GLF, it was further fractionated by anion exchange chromatography, and the unabsorbed fraction (GLF1) was isolated. Peritoneal macrophages stimulated with GLF1 produced various cytokines in a dose-dependent manner. The properties and activities of the four subfractions (PHI, PHIA1-PHIA3) obtained after sequential enzymatic digestion were examined. PHI and PHIA3 primarily comprised glucose, whereas PHI exhibited an iodine-color reaction. Furthermore, the PHIA1-3 fractions indicated that cytokine production was completely inhibited. These results suggest at the immune activities of GLF1 may be due to the α-(1→4)-glucan branched at the C(O)6 position, which was produced by C. sinensis.
Brain-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) is a cardiac hormone that exerts cardiovascular and renal effects and regulates metabolic processes. In the current study, to determine the hepatic effects of BNP, we investigated whether it improves high-fat diet (HFD)-induced hepatic IR and characterized its possible mechanism. No significant differences in body weight, fat mass, or lean mass were observed between the saline- and BNP-treated groups of normal diet-and HFD-fed mice. During the clamp test, the BNP infusion into HFD-fed mice led to lower blood glucose levels and increased glucose infusion rates versus that into saline-treated HFD-fed mice. The BNP infusion also inhibited hepatic glucose production and decreased hepatic triglyceride levels concomitant with decreased expression of gluconeogenesis and lipogenesis-related genes, resulting in reduced levels of alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase. BNP increased the phosphorylation of Akt and AMP-acti- vated protein kinase (AMPK) in the livers of HFD-fed mice compared to saline-fed HFD mice. The incubation of AML12 murine hepatocytes with BNP increased the basal levels of phosphorylated Akt and AMPK and recovered the phosphorylated Akt and phosphorylated AMPK levels reduced by palmitate treatment. Furthermore, BNP incubation prevented palmitate-induced increases in lipo- genesis gene expressions. Taken together, the current study's findings indicated that BNP ameliorates hepatic IR, resulting in reduced hepatic glucose production and hepatic steatosis.
Oil pollution was world-wide prevalent treat to the environment, and the physic-chemical remediation technology of the TPH (total petroleum hydrocarbon) contaminated soil had the weakness that its rate was very slow and not economical. Bioremediation of the contaminated soil is a useful method if the concentrations are moderate and non-biological techniques are not economical. The aim of this research is to investigate the influence of additives on TPH degradation in a diesel contaminated soil environment. Six experimental conditions were conduced; (i) diesel contaminated soil, (ii) diesel contaminated soil treated with microbial additives, (iii) diesel contaminated soil treated with microbial additives and the mixture was titrated to the end point of pH 7 with NaOH, (iv) diesel contaminated soil treated with microbial additives and accelerating agents and (v) diesel contaminated soil treated with microbial additives and accelerating agents, and the mixture was titrated to the end point of pH 7 with NaOH. After 10 days, significant TPH degradation (67%) was observed in the DSP-1 soil sample. The removal of TPH in the soil sample where microbial additives were supplemented was 38% higher than the control soil sample during the first ten days. The microbial additives were effective in both the initial removal rate and relative removal efficiency of TPH compared with the control group. However, various environmental factors, such as pH and temperature, also affected the activities of microbes lived in the additives, so the pH calibration of the oil-contaminated soil would help the initial reduction efficiency in the early periods.
The surface modification of iron oxide particle produced from steel-pickled acid by sodium-contained materials was studied. The molar ratio of $SiO_2$ to $Na_2O$ of sodium silicate was 1, 2, 3.5, respectively. The dispersion stability of iron oxide suspension as functions of amount of silica and pH was evaluated by surface charge and sedimentation velocity of iron oxide particle. Then the amount of sodium silicate was determined to provide a dispersion stability of iron oxide particle above pH 7. Finally, the surface modification of iron oxide particle with sodium silicate as silica-contained materials was done by wet ball milling. In the results of study, the dispersion stability of silica modified iron oxide particle was largely depended on amount of silica and pH together. The untreated iron oxide was unstable at pH 8, i.e. isoelectric point, but, the surface modified iron oxide particle with 0.8wt% silica was stable above pH 5. The dispersion stability was enhanced with 0.2wt% of anionic polyelectrolyte.
A suggestion has been made for neutron dosimetric techniques using activation and threshold detectors in criticality accidents. Neutron dosimetrical parameters, namely, the fission spectrum-averaged cross-sections of some threshold reactions and fluence-to-dose conversion factors have been calculated by the use of an electronic computer. It appears that detectors having comparatively high threshold energy give more fine information on spectral deformation in criticality accidents, while detectors with low threshold energy are of usefulness for measuring fast neutron fluence regardless of fissioning types. Unexpectedly it is found that the fission spectrum-averaged cross sections of the $^{32}S(n,\;p)^{32}P$ reaction is not sensitive to analytical forms of fission neutron spectrum: the modified Cran-berg and Maxwellian forms. In addition, the fluence-to-dose conversion factors seem to be insensitive to both spectral functions and fissioning types.
Newly synthesized 15-Crown-5 derivatives including anthracene were used as neutral carriers for ion selective electrodes to determine potassium ion by potentiometry. Among the five neutral carriers studied in this work, N-(4'-benzo-15-crown-5-ether)-anthracene-9-imine was found to be the best in terms of selectivity and stability. The optimal composition of ion selective membrane was 1.0, 33.0 and 66.0 wt% for neutral carrier, PVC and plasticizer, resperctively. Addition of KTpCIPB used as a lipophilic additive improved the Nernst slope and the selectivity of potassium ion over alkali and alkaline earth metals. Especially, the selectivity of potassium ion over ammonium ion was remarkably good ($logK^{pot}_(K^+,NH_4^+}$=-2.59). The response time was also excellent ($t_{100}$=5sec) and continuous use of this electrode for three weeks has not changed the selectivity and analytical characteristics.

Effect of chitosan oligo saccharides (COS) on the level of serum lipids, antioxidant enzyme activities and lipid peroxidation was investigated in rats fed with high cholesterol diet for 4 weeks, The rats were divided into three experimental groups that is, high cholesterol diet group (0.5% cholesterol; control). high cholesterol diet and 1.0% or 2.0% COS-supplemented groups (COS I , COS II). Serum total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and triglyceride level were significantly decreased and relative HDL-cholesterol level in total cholesterol significantly increased in COS II group. Liver TBARS level and activities of SOD and catalase of COS I were also significantly reduced. These results suggest that supplement of chitosan oligosaccharides reduce levels of serum cholesterol and reduce oxidative damage by activating hepatic antioxidative defense system in rats fed with high cholesterol diets.
