  • This study aimed to investigate factors influencing depressive symptoms among middle-aged women based on walking and nonwalking. The participants of the study were 56,007 women aged 40-64 years. A complex sample statistical analysis was conducted. Notably, 48.9% of middle-aged women were in the walking group and 51.1% were in the nonwalking. In the nonwalking group, relative to the walking group, more people had high school diploma as their highest level of education, and were 40-49 years old, unemployed, and public assistance recipients than in the walking group. In addition, in the nonwalking group, more people had sleeping durations of less than 7 hours, perceived stress, and depressive symptoms than in the walking group. Factors influencing depressive symptoms were identified as less than 7 hours of sleeping duration and high perceived stress in both the walking and nonwalking groups, and the degree of influence was higher in the walking group than in the non-walking group, suggesting than further studies are needed to identify the cause. The results confirmed that perceived stress and depressive symptoms in middle-aged women could be reduced by walking. Therefore, if middle-aged women continue to engage in walking practices appropriate for them, it will enhance their walking rate, reduce stress, and improve their depressive symptoms.

  • This study is a randomized controlled trial to compare the effects of light therapy on stress, depression, sleep quality and quality of life in middle-aged women. The participants of this study were 56 middle-aged women who worked at the same office. Data collection period was from August 26 to September 13 for the control group and from September 16 to October 4 for the experimental group. Subjective stress, depression, quality of sleep and quality of life in middle-aged women were measured by Numeric Rating Scale (NRS), Center for Epidemiology studies of scale (CES-D), Verran & Synder-Halpern Sleep scale (VHS) and WHO Quality of Life Scale Abbreviated Version (WHOQOL-BREF). Stress index was measured using a Canopy9 RSA (IEMBIO, Gangwondo, Korea) equipment. The data were analyzed by mean, standard deviation, real number and percentage, χ2-test, t-test, repeated measures ANOVA and ANCOVA using IBM SPSS Statistics version 25.0. The results showed that the experimental group applying light therapy had significantly lower subjective stress (F=6.30, p<.001) and higher quality of life (F=2.80, p=.049) than the control group, There was no difference in objective stress index, depression, and sleep quality. As a result, light therapy is partially effective in subjective stress and quality of life for middle-aged women, and further research is needed on middle-aged women working in work environments with limited light exposure.

  • This study was undertaken to provide basic data for the development of a mental health promotion intervention program, by confirming the mediating effects of social support in relation to the effect on the life stress and meaning of life in middle-aged women. The subjects of this study were 201 middle-aged women from D and K cities. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics and Pearson's correlations using a statistical program for structural equation modeling (SEM); fitness of the final model was RMSEA 0.03, CFI 0.98, and NFI 0.95. The major learning from this study was that life stress has a direct effect on meaning of life and social support. Life stress (β=0.05, p< 0.001), meaning of life (β=0.05, p< 0.001), and social support (β=0.05, p< 0.001) have a significant and direct effect on depression. The findings also suggest that life stress indirectly affects the mediating effect between meaning of life and social support, and also depression of middle-aged women. We believe that results of this study encompass basic data that will aid in developing a program to promote the mental health of middle-aged women.
