  • In the Chinese construction industry, the utilization of Building Information Modeling (BIM) aims to increase the total output of the construction industry by solving the problem of inefficient interoperability in the construction industry. In 2011, the Chinese Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development despite the technical advantages of BIM and the government policy, the BIM adoption rate in China is lower than 45%. Meanwhile, as the South Korean construction industry is a step ahead of its Chinese counterpart in introducing and utilizing BIM, it is expected that BIM is more actively utilized and accepted in South Korea than in China. According to a comparative study based on the hype-cycle theory, South Korea is at a more advanced stage of introducing BIM, than in China. This study aimed to suggest how to increase BIM utilization rates in China. To this end, this study comparatively analyzed factors affecting BIM acceptance between China and South Korea. For the comparative analysis of the BIM acceptance factors between China and South Korea, literature reviews on the technology acceptance model (TAM) and BIM acceptance model were carried out, and based on that, the BIM acceptance factors were classified. Other BIM acceptance factors were also added and considered, as they reflected Chinese national characteristics and construction industry. As for the derived BIM acceptance factors, construction project participants, especially actual BIM users in China and South Korea, were targeted for the survey. A t-test using SPSS 22.00 was carried out to identify significant differences in data. Finally, based on the t-test results, this study suggested ways of improving the BIM utilization rate in China. Based on the findings, this study is expected to contribute to activating BIM adoption in the Chinese construction industry and also to set a theoretical foundation for future studies on BIM utilization in the industry.

  • There are many contract patterns in the international construction market, such as CM, EPC, PM and so on. To be geared to international standards, the Construction Ministry of P.R.C improved the laws and regulations related to the construction contract. Therefore, some international contract patterns are available in China now, but the application of the international contract patterns is still in the early stage, At the same time South Korea has made a great achievement to use the international contract patterns in the practical projects. This pater carried out a study to identify differences of construction contract patterns between these Chinese construction market and Korean construction market, and to learn from each other to gain more experiences.

  • This study analyzes difficulties of enterprise activities in Chinese construction market by surveys on early entrants and interviews with experts. This study also suggests future strategy to enter the market by using inducement coefficient model. Korean construction companies in China are under heavy pressure to maintain requirement of licenses, despite recent deregulation. They are in dire predicament for market entry due to the Foreign Direct Investment System. It is almost impossible to participate in public projects and also it is not easy to do PPP projects. Therefore, Korean government should make more efforts to solve those issues through negotiations in FTA and GPA. For future expansion in Chinese construction market, it is highly recommended to boost cooperation models between Korea and China according to the empirical results of inducement coefficient model. Korean companies should collaborate with Chinese companies in some fields: smart city, environment and water treatment. Also, Korean government should support Korean companies by diplomatic means such as requesting for further opening of China's market. In GPA or GATS negotiation, Korean government should ask Chinese government that Korean companies can obtain order independently (without joint venture with Chinese companies) in China. Lastly, Korean construction companies should participate in construction projects ordered by international organizations such as ADB, AIIB.

  • China infrastructure construction market has huge potential for increased use of PPP/BOT mode and one of the most attractive markets of doing business. However, there are still a multitude of challenges for overseas EPC contractor to enter into the China PPP/BOT market both internally and externally. Especially, the construction legal system and relevant policies are considered at present the biggest barriers in accessing China construction market. Therefore, the main purpose of the paper is to identify the impact of the construction laws, regulations and BOT-related policies on the viability of foreign contractor-led BOT project in China. To the satisfaction of the purpose, this paper will first analyze China construction laws based on the key issues that must be tackled by foreign EPC contractor before they enter into China. This summary gives the possible contract scheme for a BOT project of interest in which foreign contractors could define the scope of works and measure the viability of the project. Finally, a case study of wastewater treatment plant BOT project in China subsequently illustrates some of the lessons learned from the foreign contractor's perspectives for successfully participating in future environmental market in China.

The paper sets out three goals for negotiations and the appropriate agreements and fora the government can use to advance these goals.

  • As the further development of economic globalization and the continued opening up of international construction markets, many of the countries are faced with more and more severe domestic and international construction market competition. It has been a focus question of all the countries and regions that how to achieve maximal profit in the international construction market, but construction claims are growing into a stumbling block to the project participants to reach their expected goals. Thus, the management of construction claims is considered as the greatest challenge that is facing constructors in today's vacillating business environment. Recently, many of the methodologies have been developed for the construction claims to overcome these current problems, but compared to the developed countries there is still a big gap in some Asian countries, such as China and Korea. This paper attempted to investigate and compare the project claims system in these two countries to figure out the common points and differences.
