  • Having an awareness of the ongoing conception of Honam-Jeju, Korea-Japan, and Korea-China subsea tunnels for accommodating the railway, this paper investigates immersion tube tunnel technology, one of the underwater tunnel construction methods. This paper analyses the current status of immersed tube tunnels according to their location and function. This paper summarises the dredging methods and briefly introduces the muck disposal facility. Also introduced are the case studies where measures were taken to mitigate the impact of dredging on the surrounding marine environment. This paper also explains how the tunnel elements are connected underwater using an immersion joint. This paper classifies the foundation methods into bedding and ground improvement methods and provides summaries, including their environmental impact associated with drill cuttings and cementitious binders.

  • Most of the dredged sand generated from the sewage pipe maintenance project and the government's four-river project are disposed depending on abandonment and filling-up. This is caused by the lack of related recycling technology using dredged sand appropriately and high absorption rate and micro-particles of dredged sand producted from existing sand production system. Thus, this study carried out a quality assessment for the dredged sand produced through the optimum washing and sorting system supplementing problems of existing dredged sand production system as a part of research to examine performance of removing micro-particles and foreign substances. As a result of the assessment, the dredged sand produced through the cleaning and sorting system showed a wide quality improvement effect in absorption rate, 0.08 mm sieve pass amount, clay lump volume and organic impurity content, and it turned out to satisfy both the quality standards of this study, KS F 2573(recycled aggregate for concrete) and KS F 2526(aggregate for concrete) so it could be confirmed that it would be able to be used as an aggregate for concrete in the future.

  • The purpose of this paper is to verify the financial validity of dredging the port of Busan with the change of global port logistics circumstances. In order to do so, NPV, IRR, B/C ratio, DPP techniques are adopted. The whole dredging at Northern port area is supposed to be negative at the depth of 16m water. Based upon its financial validity, however, the priority is Shinsundae (option 1) followed by Shinsundae (option 1) and Gamman (option 1), Shinsundae (option 1) and Gamman (option 2), Shinsundae (option 2) and Gamman (option 2), Shinsundae (option 2) and Gamman (option 2) and ShinGamman in sequence. In addition to this, Busan New port is considered to be the positive financial validity at the dredging of 16m water depth. This is because the ultra containerships of over 8,000TEU are trying to call at the port and Hanjin shipping and Hyundai Merchant shipping companies which are now the most significant customers in Northern port are scheduled to divert it.

  • Consolidation settlements on marine dredged clays are often greatly and potentially damaging to structures. Currently, large-scale projects are in planning or progressing in Korea. These projects have been performed on thick and soft clay layers. So, the evaluation of consolidation characteristics for dredged and reclaimed ground is very important in design and construction. Therefore, in this study, a series of conventional consolidation tests were performed to investigate the consolidation characteristics of marine dredged clays near Gwang-yang Port. Preconsolidation pressures were evaluated by applying previously proposed 8 methods for the conventional tests results in order to evaluate the legitimacy of these methods. In these methods, when estimating maximum past pressures for dredged and reclaimed ground, it was proved that Becker (1987), Silva (1970), Sridharan (1991)'s methods are excellent in legitimacy.

  • Treatment techniques of soft clay layers is needed sophisticated technology in civil engineering. Especially, dredged and reclaimed clay has high liquid limit and water content, so it is difficult to use. Now it comes to the applicability as good construction materials by predicting the behaviors. This paper is to evaluate the characteristics of sedimentation and self-weight consolidation of extremely soft clay, and is to find the way of applying model test result of reconstructing the in-situ condition to design. The consolidation properties of soft clay layers changing the size of the cell are investigated by large-scale consolidation test apparatus and the behaviors of self-weight consolidation are predicted by numerical analysis.

  • The evaluation of dredging works of pump dredger considering soil conditions is a main idea in calculating construction costs in non-cohesive soil layers. For using pump dredger, on effects of pump dredger equipment, some data of overseas code for pump dredger are different to those of results and a pump dredging capability table in the field of costs. In this study, considerations of sandy soils are described for application of construction works.

  • Geotube is a tube made of geotextile and hydraulically filled with dredged soil. This technological method has been widely used in the advanced countries of the world to build the shore protection embankment. The dredged contaminated sediments from the lake, river, and harbor can be pumped into the geotube by using the hydraulic pump. So, environments effects can be minimized and enhanced by using this method. This paper presents a field test result of a geotube in the land reclamation project for the Songdo New City construction site. The dredged silty clay was dredged by the dredging ship and hydraulically pumped into the geotube. The height of geotube was measured at every filling stage and also measured width and diameter of geotube with the elapsed time. The unit weight of soil and undrained shear strength of filled soil in a tube were measured at the various locations and heights of geotube with the elapsed time. Geotube technique can be effectively implemented for the silty clayey soil with using the dredging ship.
