Concept Analysis of Nurses' Acceptance of Patient Deaths (간호사의 환자죽음 수용에 대한 개념분석)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to identify a theoretical basis of end-of-life care by examining attributes of the concept of the nurses' acceptance of patient deaths. Methods: Walker and Avant's approach to concept analysis was used. A literature study was performed to check the usage of the concept. To identify the attributes of the concept and come up with an operational definition, we analyzed 16 qualitative studies on nurses' experiences of death of patients, published in a national science magazine from 1999 to 2015. Results: The nurses' acceptance of death of patients was identified as having four attributes: acceptance through mourning, attaining insight on life and death while ruminating life, facing with fortitude and practicing human dignity. Antecedents of the concept were experiences of patient's death, confusion and conflict, negative emotions, passive responses, denial of patients' death. The consequences of the concept were found as the holistic end-of-life care and active pursuit of life. Conclusion: This study on the attributes of the concept of the nurses' acceptance of death of patients and it's operational definition will likely lay the foundation for applicable end-of-life care mediations and theoretical development.

A Cognitive Developmental Analysis on Children's Understanding of Death (유아의 죽음 개념화에 대한 인지발달적 분석)

  • Objective: Research on children's death concepts requires an approach considering social and cultural context. A qualitative method is necessary to explore children's cognitive process of understanding death. Thus, this study, to overcome the limitations of the quantitative approach based on the deductive logic led by adult researchers, adopted a qualitative research method. Methods: The data collection, referring to the theories of Corr and Balk (2010) and Smilansky (1987), used Death Concept Questionnaire. Each structured question was followed by open follow-up questions to explore how children understood each concept of death. Results: The results showed that participant children were still lacking in the acquisition of death sub-concepts. The qualitative result from open interview showed how children can and can not acquire the concepts of death. Conclusion/Implications: The study could be used in future development of death education programs for children. Based on the results of this research, it is necessary to develop programs for children's death education, which would help them coping with death related anxiety and loss experiences.

An Inquiry on Teachers' Perceptions of Education about Death Concepts in Kindergarten Children (유아의 죽음개념 교육에 대한 교사의 인식)

  • This study investigated kindergarten teachers' experience and perceptions of education about death concepts in kindergarten children. Twenty kindergarten teachers were interviewed for this qualitative study. Results were that most kindergarten teachers perceived the necessity of the practice of the education about death concepts for kindergarten children; most kindergarten teachers recognized that all kindergarten teachers need to have professional knowledge for the successful practice of education about death concepts for kindergarten children; most kindergarten teachers recognized that education about death concepts needs to be included in the early childhood education curriculum.

A Study on Development of a View of Life and Death Scale (사생관 척도의 개발)

  • The purpose of this study was development of a synthetic scale to measure young adults' views of life and death. Participants were 610 university students. The authors developed a View of Life and Death Scale including several subscales of afterlife views(belief in afterlife and retribution, belief in souls' effects and transmigration), meanings of death(liberation, nature, integration, collapse, impact, futility), death anxiety, death concern(death acceptance, death awareness) and life respect will(suicide inhibition, abortion inhibition, organ donation intention). The present study contributed to enhance our understanding of view of life and death in young adulthood. This study, therefore, could work as a stepping stone to investigate the structural relationship among elements included in views of life and death in young adulthood and to explore the consequences and determinants of personal view of life and death.

Effect of Education in Cadaver Practice on the Self-efficacy, Attitudes to death and Professional self -concept of Nursing students (카데바 실습교육이 간호대학생의 자기효능감, 죽음태도 및 간호전문직 자아개념에 미치는 효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of cadaver practice education on self-efficacy, attitude to death, and nursing professional self-concept of nursing students. The study was designed using a non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design, data was collected November 1 and 30, 2016. The participants were 59, 2-year nursing students (29 in the experimental group and 30 in the control group) attending 1 university located in D City. Cadaver practice education program was performed 3 sessions combined 3 hours theoretical explanation and 4 hours cadaver practice a session. The data were analyzed using descriptive analysis, ${\chi}^2$ test, and t-test with the SPSS/WIN 21.0 program. The results of the study indicate that the cadaver practice education were effective in the experimental group reported a significant increase in self-efficacy(t=2.62, p=.028), attitude to death(t=5.67, p=.000), and nursing professional self-concept(t=2.57, p=.013) compared to students in the control group in nursing students. The results of the study indicate that the cadaver practice education was effective in increasing self-efficacy, attitude to death, and nursing professional self-concept of nursing students. These results provide basic data to develop future anatomy practice curriculum.

A Comparative Study of Death as Understood in Korean Buddhism and Daesoon Jinrihoe: Focusing on the Concept of Reincarnation, Myeongbu, and the Ten Kings of the Afterworld (한국 불교와 대순진리회 죽음관 비교연구 - 윤회와 명부·시왕 관념을 중심으로 -)

  • The purpose of this study is to compare death the Korean Buddhist understanding of death with that of Daesoon Jinrihoe. Various concepts, including reincarnation (輪廻), myeongbu (冥府, 'the postmortem offices' or 'afterworld') and the Ten Kings (十王) of the afterworld are used to explain views on death in both religions. However, these concepts differ not only in their content and categorization, but also in terms of the meaning they occupy within the doctrines of each religion. In other words, although many similarities can be found between Buddhism and Daesoon Jinrihoe's concept of reincarnation, at the same time, differences between them can also be pointed out. The differences include the period of time between one's death and reincarnation and also the importance of reliance upon other people or divine powers during the reincarnation process. With regard to ideas involving myŏngbu, there are far more differences than similarities. Both Buddhism and Daesoon Jinrihoe shares a similar notion of an afterlife judgment presided over by the Ten Kings. However, many differences can be found when it comes to Daesoon Jinrihoe other view of myŏngbu, known as 'myeongbu gongsa (the Reordering Works of Myeongbu).' These works are considered to be of great doctrinal importance in Daesoon Jinrihoe. Therefore, the concepts of reincarnation and myeongbu that appear in both traditions should not be considered identical and need to be redefined accordingly in comparative contexts. In other words, the concepts of reincarnation, myeongbu, and the Ten Kings as they appear in the Daesoon Thought should first be differentiated from their counterparts found in Buddhism and then be redefined in the context of the new and independent system of thought in which they exist. These concepts should then be applied to broader theoretical discourse on religion.

Dignity Therapy for End-stage Patients: Concept Analysis (말기 환자의 존엄요법 개념분석)

  • Purpose: Dignity therapy is a very effective intervention to improve the dignity of end-stage patients. A concept analysis by Walker and Avant (2005) was adopted to define, describe, and delimitate the concept of dignity therapy. Methods: Nursing literature in the National Digital Science Links (NDSL) and Medline database were searched for the definitions of "dignity" and "dignity therapy". Definitions, uses, and defining attributes of dignity therapy were identified; model and contrary cases were developed; and antecedents, consequences, and empirical references were determined. Results: Through dignity therapy patients and their families share their stories, and that in turn improves the quality of life and death. Five attributes were identified: higher quality of life and death, therapeutic conversation, respect of human dignity and worth, expressing thoughts about life and death and systematic process. Conclusion: Patients at the end of their lives feel more comfortable about death. Hospice care providers should try to protect dignity of patients in their care. The attributes of the dignity therapy clarified in this study should be applied for terminally ill patients to improve their quality of life and death.

노화개념 인식전환과 기능적 장수

  • 고령화사회(aging society)에서 매우 빠른 속도로 고령사회(aged society)에 다가가고 있는 우리나라는 노인에 대한 개념을 새롭게 재정비하고 장수고령사회에 대비한 새로운 문화를 창출하여야 할 때이다. 노화란 개념에 대해서도 불가피하고 비가역적인 생체의 변화를 통한 죽음에 이르는 도정이라는 결정론적 시각을 불식하고, 노화현상은 생명체의 생존을 위한 적응적 반응성 변화라는 사실을 분명하게 하고, 그러한 변화의 요인이 제어가 가능한 생체의 변화임을 인식하여 노화 및 노인 문제에 대하여 새롭게 대처하여야 할 필요가 대두되고 있다. 아울러 노화현상에 대한 새로운 가설인 노화대문설(Gate theory of aging)의 기본을 설명하고 이를 바탕으로 한 기능적 장수(functional longevity)의 개념을 정리해본다.

  • 고령화사회(aging society)에 접어 들자 마자, 세계적으로 유례없이 빠른 속도로 고령사회(aged society)에 우리나라가 다가가고 있다. 이러한 과정에서 과거 노인에 대한 개념을 재정비하고 새로운 고령사회에 대비한 장수문화 창출이 시급하다. 노화란 개념에 대해서도 불가피하고 비가역적인 생체의 변화를 거쳐서 죽음에 이르는 도정이라는 피동적이고 자포자기적인 결정론적 시각을 불식하고, 노화가 생명체의 생존을 위한 적응적 반응성 변화이며, 그러한 변화의 요인이 충분히 제어가 가능한 생체의 변화임을 분명하게 인지하여야 할 것이다. 따라서 기능적 장수(Functional Longevity)라는 새로운 개념을 제안하고, 이러한 기능적 장수를 추구함에 있어서 장수문화와 장수과학의 정립이 시급함을 강조하였다.

Comparison of perspective on death accepted by New Religions of Jeungsan, Confucianism and Taoism (증산계 신종교와 유교, 도교의 죽음관 비교)

  • Understanding the theory of how a religion accepts the perspective on death is a prerequisite to grasp the identity and characteristics of such religion. Furthermore, contemplating the perspective on death, itself has a significant meaning as the contemplation provides an insight on how religion has, currently is and how it would influence the practical life of the human race. This current study compares and analyzes the perspective on death accepted by New Religions of Jeungsan, Confucianism and Taoism. By comparing the perspectives on death, this study seeks to conclude the similarity and discrepancy of New Religions of Jeungsan, Confucianism and Taoism. The objective of this study is to summarize the religious characteristic and identity of New Religions of Jeungsan, and the social role of New Religions of Jeungsan. How does New Religions of Jeungsan preach afterlife? This question implies varieties of questions including: In what shape or form does human exist in afterlife?; Does human maintain their original identity in afterlife?; What happens to relations with family members in afterlife?; What is one's role in afterlife, and what would one experience in afterlife? or Does soul transmigrate or are reborn? This current study compares the answers to these questions one by one with Confucianism and Taoism.In general, this current study was conducted with a non-religious methodology. Death can be explained in three different domains: the psychological domain explaining the individual psychological awareness upon encountering death; the philosophical-religious domain explaining the death through the philosophical understanding of the human concept; and the socio-cultural domain explaining death through the social ceremonies upon death.This current study focuses on the philosophical domain of the perspective on death accepted by New Religions of Jeungsan, with a comparison of the socio-cultural significance. To understand the perspective on death preached by New Religions of Jeungsan, It is indispensable to explain the five key elements of Hon(魂), Baek (魄), Shin(神), Young(靈) and Seon(仙) that construe death. The perspective on death preached by New Religions of Jeungsan imposes a multi layer of acceptance and overcoming. This current study complements the problems and limits of previous studies by comparison with Confucianism and Taoism. Throughout this process, this current study intends to highlight the key elements of the perspective on death preached by Deasunjinrihoe, and identify the aspects of each key element. With the sophisticated discussion of the perspective on death provided by New Religions of Jeungsan with clarity, this current study will provide grounds for future studies to extract, in detail, the aspects of the perspective on death preached by New Religions of Jeungsan, in further subjects including: discussions on death such as rituals for death, treatment of bodies, funerals, educating death, euthanasia, or suicide; discussions on the existence of hell; discussions on psychological aspects of ones who encounter death; or discussions on rebirth of those who died during the creation era. This current study will provide an overview on what kind of perspective on death does those who are faithful to New Religions of Jeungsan have and currently are living their life with.
