  • An online experiment was conducted to test the subject-knowledge view of relevance theory in order to find evidence of a conceptual basis for relevance. Six experts in Library and Information Science (LIS), nine Master's students of LIS, and twelve non-experts judged the relevance of 14 abstracts within and outside of the LIS domain. Consistency among the judges was calculated by joint-probability agreement (PA) and interclass correlation coefficients (ICC). When using PA to analyze the judgements, non-experts had a higher consensus regardless of the task or division of groups. However, ICC calculations found Master's candidates had a higher level of consensus than non-experts within LIS, although the experts did not; and the agreement rates on the non-LIS task for all groups were only poor to moderate. It was only when the groups were analyzed as two groups (experts including Master's candidates and non-experts) that the expected trend of higher consistency among experts in the LIS task was seen.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of specialized thematic science club activities on the students' scientific attitudes. The subjects of this study were ninety students from two high schools in Korea. The study group consisted of forty experimental groups and forty six science clubs with no special topics. The mean, standard deviation, t-value, and significance were compared with the corresponding sample t-test. First, specialized thematic science club activities showed positive effects on students' scientific attitude. Although the average scores of the scientific attitudes of the experiment group and the control group were improved before the operation of the club, the increase of the experimental group which operated the specialized topic was larger than that of the control group and there was a statistically significant difference. In the analysis of sub-elements of scientific attitude, the increase of the experimental group was larger than that of the control group. There were no statistically significant results in the control group, but the experimental group showed significant differences in openness, creativity, and cooperativeness among the subordinate factors of scientific attitude. Second, to investigate the effects of the specialized thematic science club activities on the scientific attitude in school, family, and social situations solving the problems of daily life as well as solving the science problems, there was no significant difference within the group, but there was a statistically significant difference between the experimental group with the specialized topic and the home and school situation. This result indicated that the scientific attitudes required to solve problems in the home and school have improved positively.

  • This research was conducted to analyze the actual condition of records related to Korea shown in the catalog of major 10 European university libraries. The results are as follows. To begin with, most libraries apply subject headings of the national library, or go together with LCSH, and organize records in MARC 21 format rather than UNIMARC. Second, Korean materials usually Romanize Korean words, but three libraries are only marked with the original Korean language and available Korean search. Third, Korea-related records in most university libraries are very poor except for some libraries and are generally 2 times less than Japan related records. There are even 6 times less in 2 libraries. Forth, on investigation of the subject distribution in sub criteria of Korea-related records, subject related to 'history', 'politics', and 'economy' is largely shown in the highest rate. Fifth, Among the Korea-related subject heading, the terms such as 'Taekwondo', 'Kimchi', 'Dokdo', 'Donghae', 'Duman-gang', 'Baekdu-san' have different meanings in different libraries. However, these terms agree to LCSH in most libraries except for some libraries.

  • The access to literary works, including fictions, has focused on descriptive elements, and the subject access has been confined to denotative elements such as the subject matter, name of character and geographical name, etc, which appear in the work. This practice will not lead to the essence of subject of fiction, and does not reflect the demand of users for the subject who pursue aesthetic experience. In this study, concepts of symbol and motif and their possibility to be used as subject access point are considered to enhance a subject access scheme. In addition, this study tries to build the scheme of symbol and motif by using the glossary as the source of information. The composed schemes are applied to 20th century Korean fictions and its usability and limits are discussed.

  • This study investigated the themes of self-esteem memories in female adults. Self-esteem memories mean memories that are focused on evaluations of the self and the themes of them are classified as achievement or social relationship. Eighteen young adults(M=21.56), fifteen middle aged adults(M=54.13), and twenty older adults(M=74.35), totally fifty three female adults participated. They recalled 4 positive and 4 negative self-esteem memories respectively. The results showed that memories of positive and negative self-worth frequently focused on relationship themes, and this tendency was significant in positive memory of young adults and negative memory of middle aged adults. This suggests that social relationship is a dominant cultural value in Korea. Links between interpersonal relationship and positive/negative self-esteem memories are explained by culture, gender and developmental tasks. Further researches about the differences by sex and life scripts in the content of self-esteem memories are needed.

  • This study examined value-judgement and decision-making process of middle school students on three biotechnology related socioscientific issues (SSI) (i.e. designer baby, amniotic fluid test, and embryonic stem cell research). In particular, it focused on the level of consistency in their value application to the decisions. Twenty 8th grade students participated in the SSI program. The participants were asked to mark their positions on each issue before and after the debates. All classroom and sub-group debates were audio-recorded. The researcher conducted individual interviews with 10 students after the program. The results show three patterns emerging. First, five students applied their personal values in a consistent manner when making decisions on the three consecutive issues. Second, three students demonstrated incremental resoluteness in their value application as the sessions proceeded and had tendency to be oriented towards a specific value, more so towards the end of the program than the beginning. And third, four students gradually showed ambivalence in their decisions as they participate in the program. The results suggest that science teachers addressing SSI need to encourage students to be aware of their own values and to engage in internalized decision-making in light of those values. They also need to be aware of the possible challenges that students might feel in their decision-making process caused by the complexity of SSI.

  • This study explores experiences of college nursing students during the COVID-19 pandemic. The participants were 10 college nursing students (junior and senior years) enrolled in a university in K city. Data were collected through in-depth interviews from May 1 to June 30, 2020. The phenomenological methodology proposed by Colaizzi was applied for data analysis. We identified a total of 6 theme clusters: increased fear of an infection, feeling isolated due to the changed way of life, feeling perplexed about unexpected circumstances, inability to adapt to the sudden change in classroom instruction, feeling burdened about clinical practice, and confronting the reality as a preliminary nurse. The analyzed data revealed that subjects had numerous experiences about COVID-19. We believe there were necessity and significance to conduct this study during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. This analysis can serve as a useful resource for discussing issues related to nursing education in the post COVID-19 era.
