  • An analytical procedure for calculating the failure load of a V-shaped rock notch under two-dimensional stress conditions was developed based on the slip-line plastic analysis method. The key idea utilized in the development is the fact that the α-line, one of the slip-lines, extends from the rock notch surface to the horizontal surface outside the notch when the rock around the notch is in the plastic state, and that there exists an invariant which is constant along the α-line. Since the stress boundary condition of the horizontal surface outside the rock notch is known, it is possible to calculate the normal and shear stresses acting on the rock notch surface by solving the invariant equation. The notch failure load exerted by the wedge was calculated using the calculated stress components for the notch surface. Rock notch failure analysis was performed by applying the developed analytical procedure. The analysis results show that the failure load of the rock notch increases with exponential nonlinearity as the angle of the notch and the friction of the notch surface increase. The analytical procedure developed in this study is expected to have applications to the study of fracture initiation in rocks through wedge-shaped notch formation, calculation of bearing capacity of the rock foundation, and stability analysis of rock slopes and circular tunnels.

  • A reinforcement is required to ensure the structural safety in case of railway embankment excavation under railway load. A large diameter soil nailing with concrete wall is applied as the reinforcement method instead of the conventional soil nailing system. In this study, a series of 3 dimensional numerical analyses are performed to investigate the optimum reinforcement considering 15 different conditions based on the length, lateral spacing, diameter, and inclination of the reinforcement. The interface between soil nail and perimetric grout is considered by means of cohesion, stiffness and perimeter of the grout. 0.3 m of reinforcement diameter is assessed as the most appropriate based on the economical viewpoint though ground displacement decreases with the increase of diameter, however the difference of displacement is negligible between 0.4 m and 0.3 m of diameter. Surface settlement, lateral displacement of wall, and stress of reinforcement are calculated and economic viewpoint to reinforce embankment considered. Consequently, the optimum reinforcement conditions considering those factors are evaluated as 3 m in length, 0.3 m in diameter, 1.5 m in lateral spacing, and 10 degree of inclination angle in the case of 3 m of excavation depth. Additionally, inclined potential failure surface occurs with approximately 60 degrees from the end of nails and the surface settlement and wall lateral displacement are restrained successfully by the large diameter soil nailing, based on the result of shear strain rate.

  • Noise and vibration due to pile driving cause residents nearby construction sites to file civil complaints and to the extent of bringing construction to a halt. To deal with this issue, construction engineers have worked strenuously to develop several types of low noise & low vibration pile methods. In this study, a new noise and vibration-free precast screw pile method proposed as a low noise & low vibration pile. It penetrates into the ground by rotating and pressing to avert noise and vibration while maximizing bearing capacity. A prototype of noise and vibration-free precast screw pile method was manufactured, which is not seen anywhere in Korea and elsewhere, and have undergone pilot tests twice to determine construction method. Based on this study, features of the noise & vibration-free screw pile method, production of screw concrete pile prototype, two pilot tests and subsequent construction method were determined.

  • This paper presents an experimental study on the flexural capacity of an encased(slim-floor) composite beam, which is a wider plate under bottom flange of H-beam with web openings. Five simple full-scale bending tests were conducted on the encased(slim-floor) composite beams at varying steel beam heights (250mm and 300mm), positions of web openings, and loading conditions. The test results revealed that the web-open encased composite beam had sufficient composite action, without any additional shear connection devices, because of the inherent shear-bond effects between the steel beam and the concrete, and a stable structural performance without web-opening reinforcements.

  • The free vibration problem of symmetrically laminated composite rectangular plates is formulated based on anisotropic thick plate theory including the effects of shear deformation and rotary inertia. Considering the difficulty of obtaining closed-form solutions, Rayleigh-Ritz analysis using polynomials having the property of Timoshenko beam functions as trial functions is adopted. The boundary conditions elastically restrained against rotation are accomodated as well as classical boundary conditions. From the results of numerical studies, the validity of the present method is verified. And it is also found that the adoption of thick plate theory for the vibration analysis of laminated composite plates is essential because of the relatively large shear deformation effect, and that the convergence of the Rayleigh quotient to the stationary value is less rapid in anisotropic composite plates than that in the orthotropic ones due to more complicated mode shapes of the former.

  • Recently the deep and large excavations are performed near the existing buildings in urban areas for the practical use of underground space. The earth pressure due to the excavation are varied according to the conditions of ground, the depth of excavation, the construction methods, and the method of supporting the earth pressure etc.. In this study, not only the behavior of axial load and distribution of earth pressure on the flexible wall according to stage excavation depth but also magnitude and distribution of lateral deformation, and the equivalent earth pressure from strut axial loads were analyzed by the results measured from instruments such as, load cells, strain gauges, and in-situ inclinometer, on the field of subway construction. According to the results of this study in the case of stage excavation the earth pressure of soft clayey soil is compounded with Terzaghi-Peck and Tschebotarioff.

  • It is the common practice to over design the reinforcement for the secondary tunnel lining due to the lack of rational insight into the ground loosening loads. and due to the conservative application of the empirical design methods. The main loads of the secondary lining are the ground Loosening loads and the ground water pressure, and the ground load is critical in the reinforcement design of the secondary lining in the case of drained tunnel. If the external load is absent around a tunnel, the reasons of the load far secondary tunnel lining are the deterioration of the primary supports such as shotcrete, steel rib, and rockbolts. Accordingly, the analysis method considering the ground-primary supports-secondary lining interaction should be required tar the rational design of the secondary tunnel lining. In this paper, the interaction was conceptually described by the simple mass-spring model and the load transfer from the ground and primary supports to the secondary lining is showed by the ground-primary supports-secondary lining reaction curves fur the theoretical solution of a circular tunnel. And also, the application of this proposed model to numerical analysis is verified in order to check the potential far the tunnel with the complex analysis conditions.

  • Cooling towers have been installed on rooftops or outside of buildings and widely applied to control the indoor temperature in residential areas and buildings. However, the noise and vibration resulting from their operation may cause problems in adjacent buildings. The purpose of this study is to measure the noise and vibration of an industrial cooling tower located adjacent to industrial plants and to investigate its influence on the surroundings according to an authorized evaluation standard. Further, in order to measure the effect of the vibration of the tower on the precision equipment inside the plant, an experiment is conducted to measure the vibration of the ground in the plant and the targeted precision equipment. The measurement results indicate that the noise in the cooling tower is 4 to 9 dB(A) higher than the maximum level defined in the standard of 68dB(A). The effect of the vibration of the tower on the precision equipment is comparatively minimal, because that in the supporting frame of the building is weaker than that on the floor where the precision equipment is located. The vibration of the floor on.

  • Bearing capacity of pile foundations in cold region is dominated by adfreeze bond strength between surrounding soil and pile perimeter. It denotes that adfreeze bond strength is the most important design parameter for foundations in cold region. Adfreeze bond strength is affected by various factors like 'soil type', 'frozen temperature', 'normal stress acting on soil/pile interface', 'loading rate', 'roughness of pile surface', etc. Several methods have already been proposed to estimate adfreeze bond strength during past 50 years. However, most methods have not considered the effect of normal stress for adfreeze bond strength. In this study, both freezing temperature and normal stress have been controlled as primary factors affecting adfreeze bond strength. A direct shear box was used to measure adfreeze bond strength between sand and aluminum under different temperature conditions. Based on the test results, the relation between shear strength of frozen sand and adfreeze bond strength have been investigated. The test results showed that both of shear strength and adfreeze bond strength tend to increase with decreasing frozen temperature or increasing confining pressure. The ratio of shear strength and adfreeze bond strength, expressed as $r_s$, decreased initially frozen section but increased at much lower frozen temperature and there were uniform intervals under the different normal stress conditions. A method for predicting adfreeze bond strength using $r_s$ has finally been proposed in this study.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the life experiences of fifteen marriage immigrant Asian women who went through running away from their home countries, marrying with Korean men, divorcing from their husbands, and coping with many difficulties after their divorce in Korean society. In order to conduct this study grounded theory methods have been employed. The central phenomenon digged out from this study was 'resistance to baffled reality' (i. e. dislocation). The causal conditions which brought about the central phenomenon were 'escaping for survival' and 'experiencing the gap between reality and expectation. 'The intervening conditions included 'getting to know the reality of their husbands,' 'losing hope,' and 'not being able to pull themselves together.' The contextual conditions consisted of 'being treated as maids,' 'becoming victims of family violence,' 'making up their minds to survive,' 'securing future life,' 'being marginalized,' and 'being aware of themselves as strangers.' The action/interaction strategies on the central phenomenon were 'building support systems,' 'building up will for new life,' and 'reconstructing social identity.'The final outcome was 'arranging places of new settlement.' The divorce was classified as four types: 'coping and growth,' 'emancipation and settling down,' 'being overwhelmed by livelihood,' and 'continuous wandering.' Based on these results, this study provided a few political and practice suggestions to prevent family violence and divorces among multi-cultural families, and also to bumper the impacts of divorce.
