  • A numerical solution method for the evaluation of the static and dynamic horizontal active thrusts exerted by a backfill, consisting of two or three layers of different properties, on a retaining wall is proposed in the present study based on the Mononobe-Okabe analysis. Using the proposed method, the efficient type in forming a backfill with two layers of different properties is analyzed. In addition, for the design examples of a backfill made up of two or three layers of different properties, the static and dynamic horizontal active thrusts computed using the soil property of each layer are compared with those obtained from the proposed method, and also the problems expected in design are presented based on the comparisons.

  • There is a growing interest in breast augmentation surgery, which can most effectively maximize femininity, among modern women around the world. However, breast augmentation surgery is considered one of the most terrifying surgeries many women are afraid of, as many cases of its side effects have been reported. As a way to provide a complementary method to deal with it, this study investigated the effects of a non-surgical breast enhancement program by stretching soft tissue of the breast. According to the results, there was no change in body weight and breast elasticity, but there were marked increases in breast cup size, breast diameter and volume of the women who used this program. The external soft tissue expansion system was found to be effective in Korean women's change of breast shape. On the other hand, users should use this system regularly for some period of time, and this would limit their social activities. Therefore, for the effective use of this system, its users should make individual efforts.

  • This research was carried out for searching the treatment conditions of organic acid and heating to prepare oligomers from the carrageenan. The applied treatments were autoclaving, micraowaving, and ultrasonicating with acetate, citrate, lactate, malate, and succinate. Among several physical depolymerization methods, auo-claving treatment was the most effective for hydrolyzing the carrageenan to low molecular compounds such as oligosaccharides. Citrate or malate was the most effective catalyst in hydrolyzing carrageenan to some oligo-saccharides among 5~7 different organic acids. An acceptable autoclaving condition for hydrolyzing carrageenan to oligosaccharides was to treat for 120 min at 110~12$0^{\circ}C$. The maximum depolymerization ratio produced by autoclaving was about 23.0%. The depolymerized carrageenan prepared by autoclaving at 12$0^{\circ}C$ had oligo-saccharides of 5~7 species.

  • In the development of engineering designs, decisions are required irrespective of the state of completeness and quality of information, and are formulated under conditions of uncertainty. Furthermore, under conditions of uncertainty the design invokes risks. Thus, in the design of the structures, the currently used deterministic design method does not provide a realistic assessment of the actual safety or the reliability of the structures. It is desirable that decisions required in The process of the design invariably must be made based on the reliability analysis. Properties of soil material are subject to more uncertainty than those of other structural material. In the field of soil mechanics and foundation engineering, it needed to develop reliability-based design methods. In order to simplify the reliability analysis or the reliability-based design process of the structures associated with the active earth pressure, it is necessary to find the variation and the distribution type of the active earth pressure calculated from the basic properties of soils. Monte Carlo simulation is performed to obtain the relationship between the variation of the active earth pressure for cohessionless soils calculated by using Rankine formula and the basic soil properties and the distribution type of the earth pressure. A series of regression equations obtained by utilizing the multi-linear regression analysis is suggested in this paper and the sensitivity of the basic soil properties to the variation of The earth pressure is investigated. The type of distribution of the active earth pressure was found to be the beta distribution in most cases or to be very similar to the beta distribution, if the basic soil variables are normally distributed.

  • The soil arching in the backfill, which affects the magnitude and distribution of active earth pressure on a retaining wall, has also an effect on the stability and cross-sectional area of the retaining wall. In this study, results obtained from Paik's equation that includes arching effect on active earth pressure are compared with those from Coulomb theory to investigate the influence of the soil arching on active earth pressure, overturning moment, stability and cross-sectional area of translating rigid retaining walls. The comparisons show that the active forces including arching effects are always higher than those from Coulomb theory, irrespective of $\phi$ and $\delta$ values. The overturning moments, shear force and moment on the rigid wall are also higher when considering arching effects than when not considering arching effects. The deviation of shear forces and moments by including and excluding arching effects becomes maximum at the height of 0.02-0.08 times wall height from the base of the wall. Therefore, if a translating rigid retaining walls is designed based on Coulomb theory, the wall may reach sliding and overturning failures due to arching effect in the backfill and the cross-sectional area of the wall, especially at lower part of the wall, may not be sufficient to resist to shear force and moment.

  • In this study, the design and numerical analysis method of the inclined self-supported wall using cement treated soil were studied. In the case of the inclined self-supported wall, the active earth pressure decreased due to the decrease in the coefficient, Ka according to the slope (angle) and the weight decreasing effect, thereby increasing the overall stability. The wall with the slope caused a change in failure mode from overturning to sliding on the excavation side, and the optimal slope was evaluated to be about 10°. Compared to the strength reduction method, the overall stability in numerical analysis results in conservative results in limit equilibrium analysis, so it was found that this method should be attended when designing. As a result of the parameteric study, the stability on bearing capacity and compression failure did not significantly increase above the slope of 10° when the surcharge was small (about 20kPa or less). In the case of cohesion of the backfill, The results similar to numerical analysis were found to consider cohesion. It was evaluated that stability on sliding, oveturning, shear, and tension failure increases in proportion to the thickness of the wall, but there is no significant change in the stability on the bearing capacity and compressive failure regardless of the thickness of the wall above a certain angle (about 10°).

  • To deal with the case of a rigid retaining wall built close to a stable rock face with cohesionless backfill, analytical solution methods Proposed by Spangler- Handy and Sokolovskii are modified. The modified solution methods, taking into account different friction angles along the wall and the rock face, can estimate the developed static or dynamic horizontal earth pressures behind vertical retaining walls experiencing various types of outward wall movements. The range of application of each proposed method, which is represented by the ratio of the distance between the wall and the rock face to the height of the wall, is compared with each other and also is examined for different wall friction angles as well as soil friction angles. Further, the result predicted by the modified Spangler - Handy solution method is compared with that from the experimental model test on sand. The comparison shows in general good agreements at various stages of retaining wall rotation about its toe. Finally results of analytical parametric study, together with the design charts, are presented to demonstrate the effects of wall friction angles and horizontal acceleration coefficients.

  • Mucormycosis is an acute opportunistic infection caused by a saprophytic fungus found in soil, decaying fruits and vegetables. Numerous predisposing risk factors are associated with mucormycosis, although most cases have been reported in poorly controlled diabetics or in patients with hematologic malignant conditions. Throughout the history of mucormycosis, from the first case in humans reported in 1885 by Paltauf, through publication by Gregory et al of the first observation of rhino-orbital cerebral mucormycosis in 1943, to the report by Harris in 1955 of the first known survivor, little has changed in the diagnosis and outcome of this disease. Without treatment, the patient may die after an interval ranging from a few days to a few weeks. Regulation of diabetes mellitus and a decrease in the dose of immunosuppressive drugs facilitate the treatment of Mucormycosis. Extensive debridement of craniofacial lesions appears to be very important. intravenous amphotericin B is clearly of value. This is a case report of a patient with mucormycosis in maxilla. He was an uncontrolled DM patient, and for the treatment of intravenous amphotericin B and sequestrectomy were applied.

  • By investigating the characteristics of various factors about soil and pile containing in the theoretical equations of lateral earth pressures acting on a row of passive piles which have been already presented in the previous. papers, the equations are arranged as a simple form which is convenient to use. The simplified equation is examined so as to be also utilized to single passive pile. And a discussion is carried out on the method how to apply the equations to field. As the result of this study, the equations can be arranged as a simple linear equation with the coefficients of lateral force $K_{p1}$ and $K_{p2}$. And the simple linear equation is composed of cohesion c and earth pressures ${\sigma}_H$ acting on backside of pile's row against the direction of soil deformation. In order to apply this equation to field, the active earth pressure can be considered as the earth pressure ${\sigma}_H$. The validity of this consideration is justified by comparing the theoretical values of lateral earth pressures acting on piles with the values observed in field.

  • A flathead fish, collected from the water off Cheju lsland is tentatively identified as Inegocia guttata of the family Platycephalidae for the first time from Korea. Inegocia guttata is similar to Cymbacephalus beauforti in morphological characters, but differs from C. beauforti in lacking dermal flaps on eyes and having pored scales much fewer than oblique scales slanting backward and downward above the lateral line, single and tongue - like interopecular flap, nasal spines and circled blackish spots in the pectoral and ventral fins. A new Korean name, "Akoyangtae", is proposed for the I. guttata.
